The Batman: Ben Affleck's Scrapped Movie Featured A Shocking Death, Batgirl's Debut, And Deathstroke's Revenge

Joe Manganiello has finally revealed the details of Ben Affleck's scrapped The Batman movie, including a shocking death, Batgirl's surprise DCEU debut, and an epic Deathstroke showdown.

When cameras were rolling on Justice League (before Joss Whedon took over from Zack Snyder), Ben Affleck shared some surprise test footage of Deathstroke on social media.

Announcing that he would write and direct The Batman, Affleck tapped Spider-Man star Joe Manganiello to play Slade Wilson, and fans began getting excited about what looked set to be an epic clash.

We know that Justice League originally ended with Lex Luthor—seeking vengeance after being locked in Arkham Asylum—telling Deathstroke that Bruce Wayne was Batman. That set the stage for The Batman movie, though Whedon's reshoots ditched the idea and teased the formation of the Injustice League instead.

In his new book, Bloodlines, Manganiello finally reveals a detailed breakdown of what Affleck's version of The Batman looked like. As a reminder, the actor and filmmaker walked away from the movie due to personal issues and becoming disillusioned with the role after Justice League's reshoots.

According to the site, Manganiello describes a movie that Affleck viewed as "a superhero version of David Fincher's The Game," with Deathstroke out to "dismantle Batman’s entire life." Why? Well, he'd have been led to believe that the Dark Knight had killed his son.

Deathstroke's revenge included murdering J.K. Simmons' Commissioner Gordon and taking Alfred Pennyworth hostage after breaking into the Batcave. Manganiello also reveals plans for a mid-movie battle in which "Deathstroke would nearly kill both Batman and Batgirl before they would both escape via an aboveground train."

It seems Gordon's death would have spurred Barbara Gordon into action as Batgirl, marking a major DCEU debut. Later, the actor describes a conclusion that featured a "climactic one-on-one showdown through the streets of Gotham." Affleck was supposedly taking inspiration from Batman: Arkham Asylum for what sounded like a brutal, bloody clash.

Manganiello later recalled, "It sounded good to me. I told Ben how great I thought his films were, especially The Town, and how I was really looking forward to seeing his Best Picture version of a Batman movie."

As for Affleck's decision to write, direct, produce and star in The Batman, he says, "Is there another comp of this size where one person has worn all those hats? What, Mel [Gibson] with Braveheart maybe? And that wasn’t close to this big." To that, Affleck responded, "Yeah, I know…But don’t worry, you’re in good hands. You’re in good hands, man."

When Affleck walked away from The Batman, Warner Bros. turned to Matt Reeves to direct. For a time, it looked like Affleck would star in that version, though the movie would eventually become an Elseworlds story revolving around Robert Pattinson's Batman in "Year Two" of his crimefighting career.

Just get them on the phone again for the DCU and make this happen, because it sounds pretty cool imo

@bkmeijer1 - I prefer Damian tbh lol

Doing a father-son story with Batman not only has potential but could help differ it from prior iterations aswell.

@bkmeijer1 - Thinking about it , idk if Affleck would be interested in coming back to direct atleast and if so , I would rather they find another Deathstroke…

However i feel you could integrate this plot with Damian since Slade could go after him , “ a son for a son” type of thing.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, Affleck wouldn't return. And you're right the father-son dynamic is definitely a fresh big screen take

Sometimes I wonder where the DCEU would be right now if Zack didnt get pushed out of JL and Ben made his Batman movie.

Obviously some of the JL 2 /3 ideas were ass but some were good.

Sounds good except for the bootleg Batgirl and killing Gordon. Could have easily had Deathstroke just paralyze him leaving him wheelchair bound like Oracle

I don’t know, this sounds pretty cool and Affleck is a solid director. It would have been interesting to see him steer his own version of the character.

"I was really looking forward to seeing his Best Picture version of a Batman movie."

We all were. I really hope Affleck gets to direct a Batman movie one day, one that is standalone from the rest of DC like Nolan and Reeves'. He'd obviously be too old to play the role himself, but there are actors he could get to do just as good of a job as he would've.

Instead, we got a parody of detective genre with a plot twist about a chisel... f*ck WB. They deserved every flop.

@cincymovieguy - I’d be happy to move on if they made decent movies, but no, they killed good projects before filming and are now making slops. Being a DC fan is a pain.

The Game is a good film and using it as inspiration for this could have been pretty cool imo…

Also the plot for this movie also sounds rather reminiscent of Arrow Season 2 where ironically Slade Wilson/Deathstroke went about trying to dismantle Oliver Queen’s life , take away everything he loves and then kill him as revenge because he held him responsible for the death of the woman he loved ,”Shado” which was exacerbated by the super soldier serum he had received that twisted his mind.

Anyway , the idea for the movie sounded cool but I do find it less appealing then others because Affleck’s Batman didn’t really work for me as he did for some others and the casting of Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke (which was done by Snyder and not Affleck) i felt was “ehh” tbh though maybe Ben could have made it all work but oh well!!.

Zack Snyder, Chris Nolan & Ben Affleck was giving us the DCU we all wanting to see in our adult lives growing up with these character....too bad DC cant decide between epic, cinematic adult theme blockbusters or goofy slapstick, with weird sexual innuendos & forced comedy with bull shit claims of aiming for kids & casual watchers smfh!!!

Batmangina
Batmangina - 10/17/2026, 1:14 PM
Batfleck (and Jeremy Irons) was the only redeeming factor of the SNYDERVERSE.

He was pitch perfect as older Bruce Wayne/Batman and Irons was even better - you actually could believe that a dude dressed like a bat could take out a warehouse full of terrorists with Irons in the chair and a billionaire's budget.

I also prefer BATMAN being physically BIGGER than SUPERMAN.

Werewolf Flash Thompson was a solid looking DEATHSTROKE.

Always crazy to think about what we could've had with this one. They even said that the fight sequence between Bats and Deathstroke was going to mirror that cinematic trailer sequence from Arkham Origins.

This probably would have been cool, but no way I'd of watched it after...

2 boring ass cuts of BvS

1.5 even more boring ass cuts of Justice League

Wonderwoman 2

Whatever the [frick] those Aquaman movies were

And a poor attempt at a Flash movie.

@ArthurFuchsache - never saw Aquaman 2 or The Flash…

Don’t like BVS and JL

Didn’t care much for the first Aquaman but got some enjoyment out of WW 1984 due to Pascal’s Maxwell Lord & Pine and Gal’s chemistry (even with the whole weird body possession angle).
