THE BATMAN: Leaked Merchandise Reveals A New Look At The Batmobile And A (Blurry) Shot Of The Dark Knight

The Batman was supposed to be released this year, but now won't arrive in theaters until 2022. However, some merchandise for Matt Reeves' DC Comics adaptation spotlights the Dark Knight and his Batmobile.

Warner Bros.' slate of DC Comics slate is definitely shaping up to be pretty exciting, even if it isn't necessarily made up of the movies fans are hoping to see from the studio. There's no denying that The Batman should be something special, though, and some newly surfaced merchandise reveals a closer look at the Caped Crusader and his Batmobile.

This is definitely a very different take on the iconic vehicle, and if the set videos we've seen are any indication, it will sound like an absolute beast when it roars through the streets of Gotham.

That blurry shot of Batman is also new, and a piece of imagery we'll likely see on a lot of merchandise as we head into next year. The movie is expected to boast an R-Rating, so we really don't know how many toys we'll see beyond this, but anything with the character on it is going to sell!

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves with Robert Pattinson starring as Gotham City’s vigilante detective, Batman, and billionaire Bruce Wayne.

Also in the star-studded ensemble as Gotham’s famous and infamous cast of characters are Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Barry Keoghan as Officer Stanley Merkel; Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis as Alfred; and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman is set to be released on March 4th, 2022. Check out this leaked merchandise below:

reveals from The Batman's set photos and videos!

10. Selina Kyle And Carmine Falcone

Selina-Kyle

Catwoman clearly won't be wearing her classic comic book costume in The Batman (at least not at first), but despite what we saw in the trailer, her funeral attire grabbed everyone's attention and really made her stand out from the crowd.

In some iterations of Selina Kyle's origin story, she's rumored to be Carmine Falcone's illegitimate daughter. If Matt Reeves is taking cues from Batman: Dark Victory, then we can expect to see that play out in this world too.

Selina and Falcone left the funeral service we've seen in set photos together, and exploring that relationship might help freshen Catwoman up on screen. Should she eventually turn on him to help Batman - and that's looking likely - then it seems Reeves will explore Selina in greater depth than past films.

Interestingly, there's a hint Falcone has already crossed paths with Catwoman, so perhaps Selina is just playing along?

9. The Death of Gotham City's Mayor

23243434

The Batman trailer showed a costumed man most assumed to be The Riddler murdering someone by covering their face in masking tape. Thanks to the set photos we've seen, it seems the villain's victim could be Gotham City's mayor.

Spooks actor Rupert Penry-Jones is taking on that role, and with plenty of criminals in attendance for the funeral (like Oswald Cobblepot and Carmine Falcone), that doesn't exactly point to him being an honest man.

Bruce being there is likely because he wants to keep an eye on them, something that becomes evident from other shots which we'll get to in the next few slides.

Perhaps Riddler believes he's fighting back against the corruption which is taking over his home, making him a twisted version of Batman with his own "code."

8. Where Did You Get Those Scars?

232434343

John Turturro will play Carmine Falcone in The Batman, and given comments from Matt Reeves at DC FanDome last summer, chances are much of the Dark Knight's mission will revolve around trying to take the criminal down.

Set photos have also revealed some familiar scars on the criminal's face.

In Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli's Batman: Year One, Catwoman attacked Falcone in an attempt to build her reputation after her robberies were mistakenly credited to Batman. That left him with three hard-to-miss scratches on his face, and though his comic book counterpart set out on a mission of revenge, perhaps this one will take Selina under his wing?

It would simplify her origin story, and might justify Catwoman's eventual decision to team with Batman.

7. Wait, THAT'S The Penguin?!

2324343432

When the news broke that Colin Farrell would play Penguin, most of us guessed he might be a mix of Oswald Cobbepot and Emperor Penguin. Early set photos even teased that might be the case.

Instead, he's totally unrecognizable, and covered in prosthetics which are said to have fooled even his castmates.

In set photos taken in Liverpool, England, Farrell was spotted wielding an umbrella, a possible nod to his comic book counterpart. However, it was raining, and that might be a little too obvious.

Either way, Matt Reeves has strongly hinted that this is every bit the origin story for Oswald too, and the images we've seen show Farrell really committing to playing this shady crook.

6. The Riddler's Goons

23243434322

The Riddler is thought to be this film's "big bad," but if that was him in the trailers, we know he won't be walking around Gotham City in bright green with a cane (and a costume covered in question marks).

He will, however, have some loyal followers as goons who clearly report to The Riddler have been spotted on set.

Wearing balaclavas and jackets with question mark logos spray-painted on them, it appears they're involved in the attack on the mayor's funeral, and it's looking a lot like there are people in Gotham City who agree with Edward Nash's way of doing things. This feels a lot like the "Zero Year" story from the comics.

As for the logo we've seen, it makes us think of the Zodiac killer, a hint perhaps at how Matt Reeves plans to portray this baddie.

5. Bruce Wayne Confronts Oswald Cobblepot

232434343221

Among the most intriguing photos taken in Liverpool were ones showing Bruce Wayne conversing with Oswald Cobblepot in what looks like a very tense moment.

A set video would follow, and it didn't look like Bruce had any time for him.

If Oswald is viewed as a respectable businessman by the public (or there's not enough proof to confirm he's crooked), perhaps the future Penguin feels he deserves to rub shoulders with Gotham City's resident billionaire playboy. These scenes also indicated that there could be a shared history between them.

Given his age, don't be too shocked if Oswald knew Thomas and Martha Wayne prior to their murder.

4. Meet Stanley Merkel

2324343432213

Eternals star Barry Keoghan has also been spotted on set, confirming rumors that he's part of The Batman's already impressive cast.

We've since learned that he's playing Officer Stanley Merkel, a character who, in the comics, was James Gordon's partner when he first arrived in Gotham City. A rare honest cop, he found himself caught in the crossfire of the gang war that played out between Carmine Falcone and The Penguin, and we're betting that happens here too.

Merkel was actually one of the Hang Man's victims, but The Riddler can easily fill that spot.

This is another nod to Batman: Dark Victory it seems, but what grabbed our notice on set was Bruce Wayne handing Merkel some cash. What's that about?

3. Another Villain?

23243434322134

We've seen most of Batman's greatest foes on screen by now, with Scarecrow a baddie who made his silver screen debut in Batman Begins. Now, there are plans for him in Titans on HBO Max.

However, a sign has been spotted on the set of this film showing someone who looks an awful lot like the Scarecrow with the words "Fear City" written around it. Should that be taken as a, well, sign (no pun intended) that the Caped Crusader has already crossed paths with Scarecrow?

This might serve as an effective way to give Batman some history in his home, and may well factor into the planned TV series which will be set during his first year on the job.

Fingers crossed for a visit to Arkham Asylum, eh?

2. Batman/Catwoman Team-Up

232434343221343

Shooting was halted in Edinburgh, Scotland thanks to COVID, but before that happened, we got to see Batman racing into action on his motorbike with a woman clad in black leather - obviously Selina Kyle - not too far behind.

Both vehicles have since popped back up, and look likely to be this pairing's primary mode of transport.

Batman Returns and The Dark Knight Rises both delved into Bruce Wayne/Batman's budding romance with Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and it looks like Matt Reeves plans to explore that in depth.

The costume she wears in the trailer looks homemade, so if Selina does align herself with the Caped Crusader, perhaps he makes her a superhero costume of her own?

1. The Batmobile

2324343432213434

Matt Reeves revealed the Batmobile what feels like a lifetime ago, but we've also seen it in action.

On closer inspection, the vehicle seems to be a 1963 Corvette Stingray. Likely Matt Reeves' way of paying homage to the classic Batman TV series starring Adam West (which has even seemingly influenced the cowl Robert Pattinson dons), it's a cool idea, and one that looks undeniably badass in action.

We don't know what weaponry - if any - it contains, but this is another indication of a grounded story.

Oh, and we can confirm it sounds like a f***ing beast tearing through the "Gotham City" streets!

@Se4M4NSt4ine - it's been an actual automobile most of the time. Every Batmobile, even the Tumbler, was the modified chassis of cars. Even the more elaborate practical Batmobiles are cars. The only TANK like appearances aren't technically Batmobiles, they are Tumblers or Nightcrawlers or whatever...

Because you put mobile in bold doesn't make your statement legit. Having several likes doesn't validate it.

And anyways, I understand the history, it started out as a car. Batman started out with purple gloves. My ideal Batman doesn't have purple gloves.

My ideal Batmobile doesn't look like something a regular dude could make in a standard car garage. I prefer the Batmobile be a high tech tool.

Even year one, version one of the Batmobile... the second Bruce Wayne, the tech genius who just came back from training that made him the world's greatest detective, strategist and hand to hand combatant, decides he needs a vehicle to aid in his efforts to fight crime, he's not gonna take a muscle car and weld wing fins on it "because it's gritty and year one".... to me that's dumb.

Bruce would still design a vehicle with specs from the ground up, just like he would his suit before going out.

That whole cat burger year one Batman.... I hate that. That doesn't make sense to me. He would still go out in a Batman suit with the same level of attention that Tony Stark gave to his first REAL Iron Man suit, the mk 2.

To say Batman would have this crap because "it's early in his career" is an approach.... but not one I'm in favor of.

Just my opinion. Just. My. Opinion.

@ElricReturns - I think it's fine for now. This is still early in his career as batman after all. You get the sense from this batmobile that he had just moved from simply using regular vehicles for his missions to upgrading them with advanced Wayne technology. I think they'll have him work on building a car from the ground up so the sequel will have a more traditional one.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 5/1/2021, 12:19 PM
@Origame - no I get that. I just don't like this idea Year One= crappy versions. Look at Iron Man's first year. Bruce is just as rich, the world of Marvel just as advanced as DC tech wise.
Razorface1
Razorface1 - 5/1/2021, 12:37 PM
@ElricReturns - Ig the Batmobile was ever boring it started with Nolan's generic tank.
Origame
Origame - 5/1/2021, 12:43 PM
@ElricReturns - but Bruce isn't as tech based as Tony. Tony needs an advanced suit or he simply can't function. Bruce is a trained ninja with skills in detective work. It makes sense that he'd prioritize what helps him with those areas then slowly improve on them as time goes on. This is even true in the comics as when stories start off in his early years his vehicles consist of just regular bikes and cars.

bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 5/1/2021, 3:16 PM
@ElricReturns - I ain't gonna lie, you make compelling argument when you put it like that.

Only defense I could think of is that he wasn't able to sneak out all the tech from WayneTech. Then again, he has a big wallet and most likely access to the black market.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 5/1/2021, 3:33 PM
@Origame - I totally get that. I get the gritty, reality "themed", he's just starting out argument. I even get that Tony Stark relies on his tech more, but... personally... I love the tech side of Batman.

I get there are a bunch of various incarnations that lean into this type of year one, grounded Batman. That's fine.

I'm ready to see the version that leans into all of the skills Bruce has. I want the advanced tech savvy, world's greatest detective, hand to hand expert, billionaire. The man who travels the world to become all those things, comes home and designs a high tech multi billion dollar bat suit, with equally unbelievably expensive gadgets that show how calculating, militaristic and over prepared to an unbelievably unhealthy degree. I want Batman year one to be OP still. He just literally traveled the world to be forged into an ungodly force of a man who can kill Darkseid in years to come... I don't want my Batman fighting crime in a ski mask because "it's early in his crime fighting career......."

Batman will evolve the tech, improve the designs and always calculate for the unforseen.... thats my Batman I want in screen.

Welding wings on muscle cars is cool too I guess.
Origame
Origame - 5/1/2021, 3:38 PM
@ElricReturns - oh OK I see. I can respect that. At least there's a bunch of versions of batman out there.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 5/1/2021, 3:42 PM
@bkmeijer - this is a world of Super heroes and alien gods, we can believe a world travelled super ninja billionaire with connections accross the globe both in politics and different underworld, couldn't hide his tech year one? That's where we suspend the disbelief?

I'd argue Bruce wouldn't risk revealing anything about his plans to become Gotham protector by going out with inferior equipment until he was absolutely certain he could operate at optimum efficiency in the field. The people who trained him to be the very best would have crafted his mind to even at year one, prepare for the task ahead.

I'm sorry, I hate scrapped together year 1 Batman. That's not a Bruce that's gonna survive long.
