THE BATMAN Character Posters Reveal A New Look At Batman, Catwoman, The Riddler, And The Penguin

A new batch of international character posters for The Batman has been released, offering a fresh look at the Dark Knight, Catwoman, The Riddler, and "Oz," a.k.a. The Penguin.

One character who once again fails to receive the spotlight is Andy Serkis' Alfred Pennyworth. Both he and Jim Gordon have been sidelined in the movie's marketing campaign, with Warner Bros. instead deciding to highlight the four characters you see below. Serkis did, however, share some comments about his take on Bruce Wayne's closest ally during an interview with Total Film.

Serkis tells the magazine that Alfred "can see that [Bruce is] heading towards trouble," adding "[Alfred's] watching, and he’s still trying to hold onto [Bruce], to try to stop him from disappearing down a rabbit hole at this point. I think he believes that he’s dangerous to himself, and it isn’t particularly well-formed as an idea." That sounds like a compelling dynamic.

The Batman finds the Caped Crusader in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham City.

Joining Robert Pattinson in the star-studded ensemble are Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Barry Keoghan as Officer Stanley Merkel; Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis as Alfred; and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

@RokoVII - Can't wait for this movie, but I hate the Riddler's look.

Does this make you happy?

@RokoVII - If the movie's good of course it'll be an afterthought. I still remember those that cried out Tyler can't have a 5 o'clock shadow/stubble and be Supes, or Wonder Woman was too frail.

@CorndogBurglar - well it's way better than a pathetic suit with lots of question marks on it

@braunermegda - It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. You realize this right? It can be a worn out green business suit with something as subtle as a gold question mark pin on the lapel. It also doesn't have to be a business suit at all. But it doesn't have to be all cheesy and hokey like you're throwing out there, like it's the only other option.

@RokoVII - Matt Reeves has said a few times that the Riddler in this movie is inspired by the Zodiac killer who apparently wore a similar type of mask so I guess this look makes sense in that context.

Maybe it's been mentioned or confirmed before, but it's showing Riddler is called Enigma on the poster. I like that as a nod to the comic version, and it fits the character design here more than "the Riddler".

@JoeInTheBox

Apparently, Enigma is Spanish for Riddler.

Took 3 years of Spanish and I didn't know that. Not sure I would either.

@regularmovieguy - Wow, I didn't know that either. Shoot, "Enigma" fits this version way more and it's still sort of within comic accuracy as well.

@JoeInTheBox -

Edward Nigma - Enigma.

@JoeInTheBox - This is the first time they adopt his name like that, he's always called " el Acertijo" which means literally "the riddle". As a spanish speaker i don't really like the change but Enigma is a good replacement

JoeInTheBox - 2/8/2022, 3:52 PM
@kylo0607 - I know that, that's why I was saying it's a nice nod to the comics. But in The Batman, he's Edward Nashton.

@regularmovieguy - You are correct.

While some names are not translated from English to Spanish (such as Batman or Catwoman), some others are (like Enigma instead of Riddler, and "La Cosa" for the Thing). This is from a Spain's Spanish point of view. It's been a common trend for the last 20 years to reduce the ammount of superhero names being translated into Spanish (as an example, Punisher and Deadpool used to go by "Castigador" and "Masacre", but nowdays they are only translated in comicbooks, but not in movies and TV shows).

South-American (or latino) Spanish acts diferently. They are far more pronounced into translating the names into Spanish, but they use their own form of name-constructions.

These posters are the Spain versione, as evidenced by the name of Riddler ("Enigma" in Spain, "Acertijo" in South-America. Both words mean the same).

@Saga - Si no me equivoco, son los posters de España. Creo que en latino seguirá siendo Acertijo.

@regularmovieguy - Enigma is greek. It has a similar meaning to riddle or puzzle or quiz.
