Colin Farrell underwent a major physical transformation to become The Batman's Penguin, and delivered a scene-stealing performance in the process. The usually very handsome Irish actor looked every bit the scarred and slovenly mob boss we know Oswald Cobblepot to be, and that was down to some amazing makeup and practical effects.
We know the villain's story will continue in a spinoff series coming to HBO Max, but Farrell told Entertainment Tonight that he remains keen to be part of The Batman sequel as well.
"Oh my god, you kidding me?!" the actor responded when asked about a possible return. "It's so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I've been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean...it was a joy."
Carmine Falcone's death in The Batman has left a void in Gotham City that "Oz" can now fill. We have to believe this series will chronicle his rise to power, with the movie sequel then picking up with him as an even greater threat to the Dark Knight (and something tells us he'll be gunning for revenge after the way he was treated by Batman and Lieutenant Jim Gordon).
Asked to share details on that HBO Max spinoff, Farrell confirmed that Matt Reeves won't be stepping behind the camera. "Matt's up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he's just so meticulous," he said of the show. "He's so obsessive about what he does, but he's all over [HBO Max's] The Penguin [series] as well."
"I mean, he's not gonna direct it but he's all over the structure of the scripts and who's gonna direct them. And so, it's exciting."
The untitled Penguin spinoff is expected to begin production next year, though there's no word on a possible premiere date. Warner Bros. is also said to be plotting a TV show set in Arkham Asylum, likely following The Riddler after his imprisonment and the formative years of The Joker.
As for The Batman 2, we're still waiting on release date news from Warner Bros.
