The best review I've heard for 'The Dark Knight' was the intro to creative screenwriter magazine's interview with Jonah Nolan. It went something like "it's not based on one specific work but it completely captures the essence of what's made Batman thrive so vibrantly on the page for the past 70 years." The interview is about an hour or so long but it's really worth a listen...
