Ways to make batman vs superman better from someone who is really not qualified.
Some thoughts as to hypothetical ways to make Batman Vs Superman slightly better. Or allot worse, either way this will be interesting!
Explain WHY batman is killing!
This may be a controversial statement but I don’t particularly mind that this Batman was so violent as it delivered us a fantastic action set piece where Batman cleared the room of bad guys. What I thought was missing was to explain a reason why. Most of us I’m sure are okay with changes from the comics if they are done for the right reasons. What I thought would have been an interesting angle would be for the reason that batman was killing to be linked with the death of his Robin whose costume we see in the film, it could be explained that this caused him to ditch all of his principles and is why we are seeing a far more brutal Batman than ever before. Or even for Alfred (portrayed fantastically by Jeremy Irons) to pull him up on it and say to Bruce Wayne “you never used to be like this” or something to that effect. All that was missing was an explanation why Snyder went so far from the comic book Batman, and not in an interview after we’ve seen the film.
Another thing that doesn’t make sense is that surely there is no reason for Batman not to have killed the Joker immediately. But I’m sure/I hope this will be explained but I’m not holding my breath.
Speed it up!
My main problem with Batman Vs Superman believe it or not was that it seemed to be treading water for so long and the plot didn’t really advance that much. This lack of pace is one of the reasons why I doubt I will ever see this movie in the near future, it is just a drag. I love a slow burn in films but only if it continues to grab your attention and keeps progressing forward with worthwhile plots. One example of a plot point to get rid of would have been to not base the trial on what happened in Naimobi? (I honestly can’t remember what It was called) and instead to base it on what happened in metropolis and hold a public enquiry, this keeps the focus on why everyone is so angry with Superman in the first place. This would have cut a good 5 to 10 mins and sped this movie along.
Give superman more to do.
When watching this film and Man of Steel (which I actually didn’t hate) it became apparent that Zack Snyder doesn’t know what to do with this character except from making him mope. A prime example of this is that Superman for some reason disappears after the trial bombing, surely he is someone who believes in responsibility and doesn’t run away from problems. It is clear that they don’t know what to do with him hence them killing him off and limiting Henry Cavil to looking sad in fire or in the shower. But at least they showed him being rather chipper in the bath! So thats something I guess.
Work out a better reason for them to fight.
It seemed like the reason why the eventually fought was not really good enough and didn’t really live up to the Batman Vs Superman title. I was certain based on the trailers alone that they would eventually fight because:
A.) Batman was angry about the metropolis destruction
B.)Superman doesn’t agree with Batman’s brutality.
This would have been a good reason for them to eventually come to blows and seemed like the most logical way to get them to fight. As it turned out the reason for them to fight was so contrived and paper thin that it could have been stopped if either of them said before it “before we do this I need to tell you something”. And of course the reason it ends doesn’t bare acknowledging. Among all of the sub plots the true reason for them to be against one another was lost among the rubble.
To not limit future films.
One thing I ranted at length in my previous article ‘Why Batman vs Superman limits future films rather than sets them up?’ Is that this film seriously limited story possibilities for certain characters. One example of this is that Lex Luther now cannot run for president. This film was supposed to expand the DCEU and not close it off. If Zack Snyder had a Man of Steel trilogy like Nolan did for Batman that was self-contained and didn’t affect a wider universe then of course he could do whatever the hell he pleases, but it just seemed like he made some decisions without truly thinking them through.
Anyway those are just some thoughts which may or may not make any sense. If you agree let me know, if you don't then keep it to yourself!
