BIRDS OF PREY (& The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) Gets An Official R-Rating

It was all-but confirmed from those recent set visits already, but now the MPAA has officially issued Birds of Prey (& The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) with an R-rating. Find out why here.

Back when the Birds of Prey movie was first announced, reports mentioned that star/producer Margot Robbie and director Cathy Yan were aiming for an R-rating, but Warner Bros. were said to be a little apprehensive.

Once production was underway and details from the set visits were shared online we appeared to get confirmation that the movie had indeed landed the more adult rating, and now it's been made official.

The Motion Picture Association of America has rated Birds of Prey (& The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) R for "strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material."

The success of Joker will obviously have given Warner Bros. more confidence in future R-rated DC Comics projects, but Harley Quinn's popularity with younger teens could mean Birds of Prey proves to be a far more risky venture for the studio.

Not feeling the posters so far I hope it's good but shazam was the best movie from DC that I've seen this year so far. Joker was imho a bit over-hyped but solid. Here's hoping this excels my expectations.

@dragon316 - Not my problem watch less TV my suggestion. Infinity war was solid and it's okay if it was over hyped for you. I enjoyed it and that's what matters.

I hope the R-rating means the film will deal with mature themes, and not just give Harley an excuse to say “[frick]” every three words.

I’m still the fence with this movie. I was super underwhelmed when set pictures first began to leak online, but the trailer won me over.

Also, does this more or less confirm that James Gunn’s Suicide Squad will carry an R-rating?

@santoanderson - Oh, so you're talking about the BVS Ultimate Cut?

@santoanderson - Yea im not hyped at all. I believe the tone is similar to the new r rated animated series on dc streaming, which is just annoying. Not sure if im even going to c it unless i get dragged along with friends.

I hope its good. Shazam proved me wrong so im optimistic.

@santoanderson - WB is very reactionary, if this movie bombs, SS loses its R-rating, and they won't make another R-rated film for another 10 years. (Joker was the first one since Watchmen tanked)

@mastakilla39 - I love the r rated animated series, they have great takes of so many characters

Fascinating that they’re actually embracing R-ratings for their movies now. I’m interested to see what they can do with this more mature approach

Hmmm if Joker hadn’t been a hit I imagine they would’ve moved towards PG-13.

At a brilliant $75 Mill Budget...an “R”Rating is a “RISK” WB can well afford.
And as for the teens...now another DC property the “Establishment” is telling them they can’t see.

And more you tell them they shouldn’t or can’t...the more they will want to.

I’m not really all that interested in this movie, but it’s good to see more R Rated CBMs

I want this movie to be good and perform well, but it's easy to imagine it being critically panned and a total flop. It's certainly my least anticipated CBM dropping next year, but I still plant to see it. Hoping Ewan really delivers as Black Mask and the Birds Of Prey are actually done justice and aren't just Harley's sidekicks.

So the last half year or so of marketing and every third line is [frick]? Sign me up.

This movie will be worse than Suicide Squad. Every single thing about it just seems poorly thought out and done just to ride Harley's popularity, X-Men Origins style
