BLACK CANARY Star Jurnee Smollett Teases Return To HARLEY QUINN: BIRDS OF PREY Role

With so much uncertainty surrounding the DC Extended Universe's future at Warner Bros., we may have a positive update on Birds of Prey spinoff Black Canary. Find more details after the jump...

Even with The Flash set to hit the reset button on the DC Extended Universe, this world's future remains less clear than ever before. Discovery's acquisition of Warner Bros. has led to some big changes, and it appears plans for a slate of DC Comics movies exclusive to HBO Max have been scrapped (hence why Wonder Twins is no longer happening).

Where that leaves the Black Canary movie remains to be seen. 2020's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was a box office disappointment, so the odds of one of its characters getting a theatrical solo outing seem slim.

However, an update shared in a recent New York Times profile on Jurnee Smollett has given fans hope. It's mentioned in the piece that "she's also preparing to reprise her role as Black Canary." To that, Smollet would add, "I'm very excited about the slate of films we have coming down the pipeline. They're dream roles."

Misha Green has been tapped to write Black Canary after previously working with Smollett on Lovecraft Country and Underground. Batgirl set photos have hinted at a cameo from the character in that movie, though there's a chance these will just be Easter Eggs and not a tease for a future team-up.

We'd say Black Canary is worthy of her own movie, but whether the new bosses at Warner Bros. agree is another matter. It would be a shame for this project to be sidelined, but if that does happen, it will simply be added to an already lengthy list of DC Comics movies that were promised (Deathstroke, Nightwing, Cyborg, etc.) but never became a reality.

Keep checking back here for the latest on Black Canary.
