BLACK ADAM: Dwayne Johnson Has "Flirted Around A Few Ideas" With Kevin Feige But BLACK ADAM Came First

Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia has explained that while Dwayne Johnson has had discussions with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Black Adam was ultimately the priority for the A-List actor...

In recent years, Marvel Studios definitely hasn't struggled to bring A-List talent into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sadly isn't among them. Seeing as he's just wrapped work on Black Adam, that's hardly a surprise, but he has at least spoken to Kevin Feige.

During a recent interview with Collider, Seven Bucks Productions President and Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia confirmed that Johnson and the Marvel Studios President "have a great relationship and we've flirted around a few ideas before, but nothing serious."

He added: "There’s a mutual admiration for what we each have been doing and what Kevin has built over there is truly incredible."

Needless to say, Garcia didn't elaborate on what those ideas were, but did explain why they never panned out. "Ultimately though for us, we’ve always been very committed to what we wanted to build with Black Adam," he admitted. "Black Adam was the character we wanted to bring to life and who we felt DJ was destined to play. Once we set our sites on this character over a decade ago it was hard to imagine DJ [playing] anyone else."

Johnson always speaks passionately about Black Adam, so his commitment to that project does make sense. Yes, the MCU would probably be a safer bet, but the actor stands a very real chance of putting this character on the map next year (leading to sequels, spinoffs and, hopefully, an eventual clash with Superman and Shazam).

The door isn't completely closed when it comes to a possible MCU appearance, of course, but we'll have to make do with seeing Johnson in the DCEU for the foreseeable future.

@Krav - agreed! I really think it’s cool how passionate he is about playing Black Adam. I think some people are taking his “hierarchy of power is about to change” talk as him being arrogant, but honestly I think it’s because he’s loves the character so much. Damn I wish Cavill was still Superman. Would have been great to see Cavill’s Supe and Shazam go up against the Rocks Black Adam like that animated DC showcase movie!

Eh, controversial perhaps, but I hope The Rock doesn't join the MCU, not that I have anything against him, I'm looking forward to Black Adam, and shit, if he was in the MCU, of course I'd look forward to that as well.

But I think Marvel does a good job of casting relatively unknown or up and coming actors a lot of the time or people that you just don't expect to be in a Superhero movie, and it works better for them, in my opinion.

Neither needs the other for publicity at this point, and the Rock really only plays the Rock, so I don’t really see him as great casting for any major role.

Yeah, RDJ’s personality overshadowed the Iron Man role, but at least it dovetailed nicely with the concept of the character and still felt fresh as we’d never really seen him as an action hero. Any role that used Johnson’s physicality would feel pretty interchangeable. Maybe if he voiced a CGI character significantly different from himself…

For some reason I clearly picture Johnson as some random bruiser on Rumlow's STRIKE team in TWS. Would have been a waste of a role of course, but maybe that would have been fine considering he's doing Black Adam anyway lol.

I think the only Marvel project I'd be okay with him being in would be an MCU-adjacent Deadpool movie with little to no impact.

DWAYNE: "So here's what I was thinking Kev, can I call you Kev? So, movie starts with 'the hierarchy of power in the MCU is about to change'. I arrive with my variants. Showing off my muscles, no CGI of course. I have to look superior to my co-stars. So I fly in and no one can stop me. I'm too powerful. I'll do some of my old wrestling moves. Thor, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Hulk, doesnt matter. They dont stand a chance.....

FEIGE: "Yeah, stop right there Dwayne. I just dont think that's going to work."

*Later that day*

DWAYNE: "So here's what I was thinking. Forget Superman, Shazam and all them. Just imagine the phrase 'the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change'......

WB: "Stop right there! Brilliant!"

I don't know. I actually always thought of him playing, after revisiting the original Lee/Kirby "Thor" comics, the MCU's version of Hercules. Yeah I know he has already played that role in a non-comic movie, but think he would be perfect for that going up against Thor just like in the comics. But I also agree that at this point he doesn't need Marvel and Marvel doesn't really need him. But it would be nice to see nonetheless.

Only bring him in to play a villain. We've seen him play a superhero in more than enough films and he's never actually been in superhero film.

It's a shame he already burned out Hercules.

I was big fan of him playing Luke Cage, but if I could choose anyone for the Rock to play in the MCU I’d like to see him as Hercules, the Gladiator, Hyperion, Apocalypse, Bishop, Strong Guy or the Thing.
If he doesn’t ever act in the MCU I’ll be ok with that too. I think Black Atom will be a great role for him. Just hopefully they keep it more serious of a character and don’t shoe horn in comedic moments.

He should take over as Drax after GotG3. Play a harder, more serious and aggressive version from the multiverse, since Batista said he's done anyway. Would be funny to hear Dave's interviews for years when they give Johnson the solo movie Batista wanted for Drax ;)

Also, Marvel movies might be the only universe out there that can withstand "The Rock Effect" and avoid letting him take over the franchise.
