With His Hollywood Career On The Decline, Black Adam Star Dwayne Johnson Is "Exploring" Becoming A Singer

It's been a challenging few years for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and after another critical and commercial flop with Moana, the actor is now mulling over a move to becoming a singer instead.

Like many action stars before him, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is struggling to find his place in Hollywood. There was a time when he was one of the world's most bankable actors, credited with "saving" the Fast & Furious franchise with a memorable turn in 2011's Fast Five.

While critical hits were few and far between, Johnson became a staple of commercially successful projects, whether it was Moana, Jumanji, or DC League of Super-Pets. However, since around 2021, the actor's star has faded.

Whether it's bombs like Red Notice and Red One, or a failed attempt to take over the DCEU with Black Adam, Johnson is struggling to regain his footing. In quick succession, NBC cancelled Young Rock, his football league, the XFL, fell flat, and a WWE return—which introduced a popular new heel persona, the Final Boss—was marred by controversy, tall tales, and apparent attempts to steal the spotlight.

Looking to reinvent himself, Johnson once again walked away from WWE in an effort to be considered a serious actor. He received mostly positive reviews for The Smashing Machine, but his expected Oscar nomination never materialised, and a return to blockbuster fare this summer with the live-action Moana proved a disaster.

So, what's next for Johnson? How about a singing career?

Talking to Rolling Stone, Johnson opened up about performing "Your Dad," a track he co-wrote with Iam Tongi, the Hawaiian singer who won American Idol in 2023, for Moana: Voices Across the Ocean

"I’m exploring that now, and I appreciate you asking that," the actor said of potentially becoming a singer. "As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now."

"I’ve reached this point in my life and in my career where, honestly, when I wake up in the morning, I swing my legs out of bed, and whatever the thing is that I’m doing, I wanna feel like I’m just running towards it," Johnson continued. "And the most gratifying things we do are when it’s for us, because we have enough pressure to deliver for so many other entities."

"The things we do, we must do them for ourselves, and then we must feel it in here, behind our rib cage. But they’re also always connected to some sort of commerce," he said, explaining why this song is so personal to him. "You make films, especially the big four-quadrant movies, you want them to do well. But this song, for me, is just a song to my daughters."

"Where there’s no pressure of an expectation to deliver something that, 'Well, how are the sales, and how’s the box office? And how’s the streams?' It’s just from me to them."

Asked what his exploration of a music career might look like, Johnson said, "Maybe something in just the old-school soul genre, with some country flavor. I love old-school soul. Sam Cooke. From Sam Cooke, again, to Merle Haggard. That’s how I grew up. And those were my strong influences from my dad."

The former professional wrestler follows in the footsteps of Steven Seagal, Bruce Willis, David Hasselhoff, and Kiefer Sutherland, all of whom have taken a crack at moving from acting to music with varying degrees of success.

Johnson has previously impressed with his musical talents both in a WWE ring and on the Moana soundtrack, and we'll let you be the judge of this latest effort, which you can listen to below.

He just needs to return and work that long overdue match between him and Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 43. Supposedly Saudi is offering to pay him $100 million which is the biggest paycheck for any pro-wrestler has ever received retired or not. I really hope he comes back to the WWE one last time.

@UceOmega - He's never been better than when he was in the ring, but I hope he has enough money socked away that he doesn't need Saudi blood money to make ends meet.

"It's been a challenging few years for Dwayne"

I wish I had his problems.

All that money and no imagination on how to enjoy life.

How starved for attention is this guy? Honey you made it okay. You went from living in your car to having a family, 10 houses, 20 cars and a jet.
Just go sit on the beach and get a 25 year old hottie to oil you up or something.

@Lisa89 - what exactly did he do, that makes you feel this way? is it because you want attention and join the dog pile rock crowd or did he really really make you upset?
Lisa89
Lisa89 - 8/12/2026, 10:28 AM
@supermanrex - Unless you think Dwayne Johnson is an imbecile, you know that he knows that he is, at best, a 5 out of 10 as a singer. Throwing yourself into an overcrowded field under these circumstances is just shamelessly cashing in on ones fame to an embarrassing degree.

I saw something about Lenny Kravitz the other day (a real singer and artist), he's just chilling in his house in the Bahamas. Sometimes makes a show here and there, but is just living his semi-retirement like a pro.

I think that's a good way to go if you're famous. Just enjoy your money, help someone else and go live your own life. Dwayne needed a good friend to tell him how it is.

@Clintthahamster - Yeap, totally. I'd have hobbies some might consider work (I love messing with tech, for example) and service to return something to society, that's for sure. But to work as in an obligation through financial contract, no way.

I feel bad for him, I hope he can make it through this rough patch, in fact, you know what, I’m gonna donate money to his dumpster fire in Hawaii, just like I should have done when he and Oprah wanted my money the first time. Hmm, is that when his popularity fell? NAHHHHHHHHHHH

right now, he is going through being beat up by everyone phase. he had some big flops and people love to dog pile on failure especially big name celebs. maybe take some time off and come back with something big after the hate rock phase wears out. because everything he attempts now is just going to be a target for the haters and toxic online bullies.

Man, him and John Cena really talk like A.I. Models more and more every day.

@TheVisionary25 - being a good worker, and not being able to have normal human interactions are 2 very different things. Sean Michaels and Steve Austin were also great talkers, and they aren't PR robots.

The thing about most of the guys is that once they get past a certain level of rich, the money doesn't really matter that much any more. Johnson is meant to have a net worth of £800m+ = numerous Hollywood films with big salaries, wrestling career, Tequila business, owns a production/media company, big social media earnings (he has 380m followers on Instagram alone), and numerous endorsement/promotion deals. Unless he does something very, very stupid with his money he's never going to go hungry.

What matters at that level is the ego, and needing to feel popularity, adulation, etc. He's always had an ego (which isn't a bad thing, it's probably what helped him to succeed) but it does probably mean he's not a guy who could ever just step out of the limelight and enjoy a peaceful retirement doing whatever he wants.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 8/12/2026, 10:53 AM

He is filthy rich and should retire. But his massive ego won’t let him.

His lousy action movies no longer make money, so now he wants to be a musician.

He’s just a sad joke that’s no longer funny.
