The 2021 Academy Award nominations have just been announced, and while the categories were mostly free of CBM and genre releases (not exactly surprising... especially this year), the late Chadwick Boseman did pick up a posthumous Best Actor nod for his final performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

The Black Panther star was nominated alongside Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Gary Oldman for Mank and Steven Yeun for Minari. This makes the former The Walking Dead alum the first Asian-American actor to be nominated in this category.

Elsewhere, Eternals helmer Chloé Zhao became the first Asian woman to be nominated for Best Director for Nomadland. Emerald Fennell was also nominated for Promising Young Woman, meaning two women have been nominated in the Best Director category for the first time in the Academy Awards' nearly century-old history.

Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Soul and Wolfwalkers were nominated for Best Animated Feature, and Tenet picked up noms for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design.

A well deserved nomination and probably a well deserved win.

In terms of other acting categories, rooting for Mulligan, Kaluuya and Seyfried. Vinterberg's nom for Director is a pleasant surprise, but I do feel like King deserved a place in there. Still, two women nominated in the same year (with one of them being the frontrunner to win) is history making. Soul getting nominated outside of just Best Animated Feature feels so good.

@WakandanQueen - Yeah I think Chadwick Boseman & Riz Ahmed had the best performance last year for male lead actor. I'm a bit surprised with Steven Yuen for Minari as he's not in it a lot, I thought the child actor who played his son should have been nominated as the lead.

The only actor who for sure is winning in their category is Kaluuya for Judas and the black messiah. I thought Viola Davis's performance was the best but since Mcdormand and Davis already won before, I think they are going to give it to Mulligan.

Best Supporting Actor

Daniel Kaluuya – Judas And The Black Messiah

[...]

Lakeith Stanfield – Judas And The Black Messiah

Who the [frick] is supposed to be the lead in that movie then? Plemons?

@Kyos - Honestly both should have been in leading actor category imo

@Kyos - every so often when a movie when it's noticed that Actor is gonna be stacked the studio will submit the main actor (stanfield) as supporting, justifying it as him being a co-lead

@Kyos

I’m glad they campaigned Lakeith for supporting. He wouldn’t have gotten in the lead actor category.

@Kyos - Lakeith is the lead and Kaluuya was the supporting actor. But Lakeith was only pushed into the supporting to even the odds of winning by the studio because if the actor already won a golden globe, the academy sometimes won't give them an oscar just so they can create some unforeseen surprises.

IMO Kaluuya is undisputed in this category though, if he doesn't win its going to be really controversial.

Sorkin for Director seems to be one of the more shocking omissions for me.

A lot of live for Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal, which I'm a fan of.

Also, a lot less love for One Night In Miami than I was thinking

Never thought I'd see Borat pick up an Oscar nom lol

@DannRamm113 - Ah cool, I didn't realise that.

And don't get me wrong, I'm sure his performance here was worthy I just can't get Borat out of my head XD

@BrainySleep - When her performance is so convincing she actually got Rudy Giuliani to compromise himself as a paedophile on film, she deserves an Oscar.

Wow, I need to catch up. I haven't seen any of these, I guess I've been slackin. Though Nomadland is next on my list.

I finally got to see Wolfwalkers last weekend... that’d be my choice for best animated feature. Really charming and gorgeously done.

NomadLand for Best Picture and Best Director.

Boseman for Best Actor.

Andra Day for Best Actress.

I can't believe they're still calling the Best Foreign Language Feature' category 'Best International Feature', though.

Has nobody told them that the Best Picture category is international? International doesn't mean non-American. The extra category was for films in other languages, not for non-American films. That's stupid. Why would you have a category for non-American films?! It's dodgy.

For example, Passion of the Christ was a foreign language film, but it was also an American film. Also The King's Speech was British. It won Best Picture but was not nominated for Best Foreign Language Film because it was, of course in English.

I can't believe they're doing this twice in a row.

Just to further my point:

The Father is nominated as Best Picture.

It is a British-French film.

It is not nominated for Best International Feature.

So...
If Best International Feature means non-American (which it doesn't) then why is The Father not nominated?
And if it doesn't mean non-American (which it actually doesn't) then why aren't the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories exactly the same?!

Sorry. Little things like this bug me.

In my opinion, Boseman deserves that statue. Not just because he is was so [frick]ing good in the role, but also because of the socio-historical weight the role still carries today.

Boseman deserves it. His performance was incredibly moving.

Also, Minari is being slept on.

6 of my top 10 nominated. Not bad picks this year oscars. Not seeing anything insultingly put in there or left out. Probably more at estimate to the limited choices than anything else

Still not sure how Judas and the Black Missiah got in here. Great movie but did they extend the timeframe for qualification? Shouldn’t it be up for nomination next year.

@MrDandy - Extended release time to Feburary 28th to account for the months where people weren't sure what they were doing with their movies last year

Would love to see "Wolfwalkers" get the star animation prize.
For such a fledgling Irish studio, Cartoon Saloon has a stellar track record. The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea were both amazing movies.
Had the pleasure of doing my placement there during university, not that I'm biased or nothing
