Black Panther is dominating the worldwide box office after passing the $1 billion mark but it's in North America that the movie really appears to be exceeding expectations. For the past six years, The Avengers has held the crown for being the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time domestically but that could be about to change based on the way the Marvel Studios movie is currently performing.
During its first twenty-four days of release, The Avengers earned a mighty $513.4 million. However, in the same amount of time, T'Challa's first solo outing has scored $562 million, an impressive figure but one which puts it $62 million behind The Avengers' total gross of $623.4 million. However, if it continues performing this well, analysts believe it could claw through Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
There's nothing to say that this will definitely happen but A Wrinkle in Time proved to be no threat to Black Panther after tepid reviews and depending on how well Tomb Raider fares with critics, the Ryan Coogler helmed release could stay on top for the fifth week in a row. Either way, its run at the domestic box office will continue for a while and there's definitely time for it to earn another $62 million.
We'll just have to wait and see but Black Panther now stands out as one of the most successful Marvel movies of all-time and Kevin Feige has already confirmed that a sequel is on the way. That points to T'Challa's future on the big screen being very bright but with the character set to play a key role in Avengers: Infinity War next month, this standalone adventure may not hold this record for that long...
