With Black Adam now in theaters, Dwayne Johnson appears to be clarifying a couple of things about his DCEU future, walking back on plans for Superman and a major character death. Spoilers follow from here!

Despite taking something of a mauling from critics, Black Adam looks set to be a box office hit. That all but guarantees we're getting a sequel, but even after some big teases from star Dwayne Johnson, that may not include Superman.

Understandably, the actor did everything within his power to hype up Black Adam before its release last week, even spoiling the mid-credits scene (in a roundabout way). That appeared to be setting the stage for Henry Cavill's Man of Steel to battle Khandaq's new protector, but The Rock is now dialling back fan expectations.

Sharing an interview clip in the Tweet below, Johnson pointed out that Superman vs. Black Adam is "definitely not the next step." Instead, "We have a lot more long term storytelling to do before that historic DCEU showdown and more new characters to establish."

We can't fault that approach, though it will be a little strange if these two characters met in the mid-credits scene, only for whatever came next to be saved for much further down the line. Many fans have argued that they want to see Superman battle his classic villains, not Black Adam, so perhaps that's a priority for Warner Bros.?

Talking of walking back on things, it appears Dr. Fate's story isn't over after all. Kent Nelson died in Black Adam, but with moviegoers embracing the hero, a resurrection may be on the cards.

Eric Strauss, Linda Strauss, Inza Cramer Nelson, Jared Stevens, Hector Hall, Kent V. Nelson, and Khalid Nassour have all also held the Dr. Fate mantle, so Black Adam 2 has plenty of options. Pierce Brosnan could return, of course, though Kent's demise seemed very definitive.

Black Adam is now playing in theaters.

If Black Adam is a bonafide hit they’ll continue with their long term plan.

If it’s only a moderate hit they’ll push for the Supes vs BA movie sooner.

If it flops we’ll be lucky to see BA square off with Shazam in Shazam 3

@Blergh - hit, flop or fail, I think Black Adam will get a trilogy of movies regardless.

Could see him go up against the Suicide Squad, Superman, Shazam and maybe even the whole Justice League next.

@Blergh - Doesn't Black Adam contradict the Shazam movie?

In Shazam, the wizard says
"Long ago we chose a champion, and we chose recklessly. He used his power for revenge, releasing the seven deadly sins into your world. Millions of lives were lost, entire civilisations erased from existence".

That is not what happened in Black Adam at all.
The boy they chose did not use his power for revenge or release the seven deadly sins and entire civilisations weren't lost, just one palace.

I mean I guess the Snyderbots are happy, because they don't consider Shazam to be a part of their canon.

@Blergh - About the third option, if Shazam 2 is a hit, if it isnt, I dont think we'll see Black Adam again.

This is because I dont think Zach Levi will have a problem playing the secondary role.

@bkmeijer1 - You actually believe DIscovery will produce two more Black Adam movies if this one isnt a hit?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/25/2022, 8:13 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - it's Dwayne Johnson. The man starred in Toothfairy and Scorpion King, and somehow still managed to become one of the most successful action stars. If someone can make it happen, it's The Rock

@bkmeijer1 - Discovery threw a finished $90M movie into the trash to save a few bucks on taxes, and you think they will keep giving The Rock $250M budgets to sequels to a movie that might just break even?

bkmeijer1 - 10/25/2022, 8:44 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - them throwing a 90 mil movie in the bin tells me enough that WBD is full of surprises.

But yeah, if the movie barely breaks even I doubt it as well. The thing is, I think it will make a pretty solid profit. And otherwise Johnson will convince WBD the next one will.

@bkmeijer1 - I think, with a budget that sizes, Discovery is expecting this movie to make $1B.
The Batman had a smaller budget, and that $750M BO wasnt enough to convince them right away to greenlight a sequel.
With a chinese release, I expect around a final $650M at the BO, maybe a bit more, but less than The Batman.

@TheHumanSpider2 - My expectation is around 700 mil as well. Would surprise me if it does more than The Batman

@ObserverIO - I mean, considering the wizard was the one who said it, it's possible he considers both the boy and Adam to be the champion. Considering the boy was the one to give Adam power.

As for the act of releasing the sins on man, considering the king was holding onto eternium, it's possible by destroying that palace could've caused a chain reaction that released the sins on mankind.

I think it's just a matter of us getting more details on this, which we'll get in the eventual Shazam vs black Adam movie.

@bkmeijer1 - I dont think it will, considering the word of mouth, it has less legs than Anakin.

I was kinda expecting Black Adam 2 to be Black Adam vs. Superman. They've been teasing Superman the whole time, and Black Adam 2 is a priority apparently.

Anyway, if we get Black Adam vs. Shazam first, that's great (if not better) too.

Thank Rao.

I want 3 solo movies outta SuperCavill.

If he appears in other movies that's also fine.

@KWilly -

I've said this before, I'll say it again:

People don't praise Feige. People don't hail Feige. People don't worship Feige.

People are thankful for the machine that Feige has built.

Sara Finn's casting, directors who also act as consultants on other projects, their often collaborators like Giacchino, the cast who have made their roles iconic, it's all a matter of harmonic synergy.

Any franchise that rests on the shoulders of a single man, no matter how broad their shoulders or how fanaticised their audience, is doomed to fail.

@KWilly - The current state of the MCU is a mess, but:

1 - Kevin Feige created the only succesfull cinematic universe in history
2 - The Rock made one shitty movie, including a 5 seconds cameo with an actor that wasnt even there.
