While the first comic book movie of the year, Warner Bros.'
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),
failed to leave much of a mark at the box office, Sony Pictures is surely hoping their fortunes are better as they debut their own non-traditional superhero movie with
Bloodshot, the first instalment in a possible Valiant Comics shared cinematic universe.
With a relatively modest $42 million production budget, which is considerably lower than a vast majority of modern superhero movies, there is a far less daunting path to profitability for the film if it can manage to find an audience this weekend and in the weeks to come.
However, early tracking currently estimates an opening in the $10 million to $12 million range domestically, which combined with the uncertainty of the global box office, including China where Vin Diesel (
Fast & Furious) is a huge star, makes its ultimate box office prospects uncertain, at best.
The film's official plot synopsis reads, "
After he and his wife are suddenly assassinated, Marine Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel) is brought back to life by a team of scientists. Enhanced with nanotechnology, he becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine – Bloodshot. As Ray first trains with fellow super-soldiers, he struggles to recall anything from his previous years. But when his memories flood back and he remembers the man that killed both him and his wife, he breaks out of the facility hellbent on revenge, only to discover that there’s more between what he originally feels and to a conspiracy."
