10 Comic Book Movie Villains Who Deserve (And Need) A Second Chance

It's depressing to think of all the great villains who have been f***ed up on the big screen over the years, but which of them are most deserving of a second chance? Well, these are the top contenders.

For some reason, Hollywood really struggles with comic book villains. More often than not, they kill them off before the credits roll because they seemingly can't think of anything to do with them beyond just the one movie, something which has done a disservice to everyone from Doctor Octopus to the Red Skull. However, an even bigger issue is how poorly they're so often portrayed.

Some of Marvel and DC's best bad guys have been handled appallingly over the years, and regardless of whether we're talking about the actors chosen to play them or the way their personality and appearances were handled, there are a lot of villains who are in desperate need of a second chance.

Here, you will find the ten comic book movie villains who deserve to be brought back to the big (or small) screen in some way in the near future. For some, that's closer to becoming a reality than others, but a few are currently stuck on the shelf due to how poorly things went the first time around. The one thing they all have in common though is that they all deserve the opportunity to return...

10. Doctor Doom

loading

Arguably one of the greatest Marvel villains of all-time, it's heartbreaking to think that Fox has dropped the ball on Victor Von Doom on three separate occasions now. Failing to touch on his scarred face by making him a weird electrically powered half man/half machine hybrid, the Fantastic Four movies also forgot (well, didn't bother) to address the fact that he's a Latverian dictator!

As a result, we desperately need to see an authentic version of Doctor Doom in the next Fantastic Four reboot, but considering the fact that Fox has tried and failed with him over the course of three movies, it wouldn't be remotely surprising to see him left on the shelf for the foreseeable future.

9. Jigsaw

loading

Rumour has it that Jon Bernthal will take the lead in his own Daredevil spinoff at some point in the near future, and pitting The Punisher against one of his most iconic villains there is a must. Played by The Wire's Dominic West in Punisher: War Zone, the actor delivered a decent enough take on the character, but one which was very B movie-esque and lacked any real sort of emotional depth (just like the lead then).

When you look back at what Marvel has done with the likes of The Kingpin and Purple Man, you just know that their take on Jigsaw would be something special. There are other villains the vigilante could face of course, but another take on this guy has serious potential.

8. The Mandarin

loading

That "Trevor" reveal in Iron Man 3 remains one of the most controversial creative decisions ever made by Marvel Studios, and even their attempts at damage control in that One-Shot didn't calm down fans. I didn't actually hate the twist (it was funny!), but seeing the real Mandarin is a must.

It's something which has been building since the first Iron Man movie, with even Ant-Man hinting at the return of The Ten Rings just last year. Robert Downey Jr. may seem reluctant to be drawn back into another solo outing for Tony Stark, but Kevin Feige needs to throw enough money at the actor to make it a reality because a true battle between Iron Man and THE Mandarin would be epic.

7. Bullseye

loading

Short of a last minute reveal in season two of Daredevil (which seems unlikely given the focus on Elektra, Punisher, and The Hand), we have at least another year to wait until seeing Bullseye again.

The recreation of some iconic comic book moments in the Daredevil movie still didn't elevate Colin Farrell's take beyond being a clichéd and silly bad guy, so seeing The Man Without Fear pitted against a more faithful version of his greatest foe is an absolute must. Next time around, the villain needs to be in his costume, and I wouldn't say no to seeing him played by Jason Statham if there was any truth to those rumours and Marvel can talk him around. Either way, we need Bullseye!

6. Emma Frost

loading

January Jones was singled out by many critics and fans as the worst part of X-Men: First Class, and while I think that's a little harsh, her portrayal of Emma Frost didn't exactly do the character justice. While it would be a little hard to explain considering the fact that Emma is dead, a new take on this Hellfire Club member would be awesome, especially if we were to follow her journey from villain to hero to Cyclops' lover.

However, considering the fact that Fox are developing that Hellfire TV series, there's a good chance that the next time we see Emma will be on the small screen. That could work, even if skipping over the character's involvement with the X-Men would be a shame.

5. Ultron

loading

Pretty much every other villain listed here has made the cut because the way they were originally portrayed was so terrible, but that's not really the case with Ultron.

Instead, I just want to see more of James Spader's snarky bad guy! Some sort of variation on Brian Michael Bendis' awful Age of Ultron storyline would be cool, especially as placing Earth's Mightiest Heroes in a post apocalyptic setting has a ton of potential, as does introducing the concept of time travel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We technically didn't see Ultron die (what if The Vision spared him?) so this could very easily happen somewhere in Phase 4 with a redesigned Ulton and the return of Spader to the role.

4. Venom

loading

We recently learned that Venom is on his way back to the big screen, this time with one of the writers of Edge of Tomorrow working on his first solo outing (what no one mentioned at the time is that Doug Liman scrapped almost all of Dante Harper's work there).

Throw in the fact that Venom won't be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad as producers, and this is a flop in the making. If Sony has taken note of the overwhelmingly negative response to their plans, they'll hopefully reconsider making Venom the villain in a future Spider-Man movie because Kevin Feige no doubt has a very long list of amazing ideas for the iconic symbiote.

3. Scarecrow

loading

As much as I love The Dark Knight Trilogy, the grounded way Christopher Nolan handled some of the movie's villains is definitely disappointing. Scarecrow is a perfect example of that, and after he was disappointingly taken out with a tazer while atop a horse, a truly frightening version of this bad guy being brought back to the big screen is a must.

For an example of how great that could be, you need not look any further than the Arkham video games, and Batman being pitted against the Scarecrow (leading to some trippy and terrifying visions) in Ben Affleck's reboot could be a fun way of exploring his guilt over Jason Todd. It would be better than what Gotham did, that's for sure.

2. Green Goblin

loading

Too soon? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 royally f***ed up both Norman AND Harry Osborn back in 2014, and while there's no denying that there are a lot of great villains who have yet to make their big screen debut that Marvel could turn to for the reboot, I would love to see their version of the classic Green Goblin.

Seeing the costumed Norman Osborn targeting the young Peter Parker would be awesome, though the chances of this happening may be slim after the aforementioned sequel so recently messed up the villain and even dropped the ball on a moment as iconic as the Death of Gwen Stacy. Still, I can't help but hope that we get to see an all-new take on stormin' Norman.

1. Galactus

loading

It's been almost a decade since the release of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and yet I still find myself unable to forgive Fox for turning Galactus into a cloud of space dust. While there's no denying that he's a character it will be hard to portray on the big screen (how bid do you make him and should he really be purple?), Kevin Feige clearly had an idea once upon a time as he offered Fox the chance to keep Daredevil in exchange for Galactus and the Silver Surfer.

Whether that deal has since been made because of those X-Men TV shows is up for debate, and while it would no doubt be best to see the Eater of Worlds in the MCU, I'll take pretty much anything at this stage!

Do you agree that these villains all deserve a second chance or are there others you would like to see back in action before them? As always, weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section.
