Riverdale's most famous residents are about to face something more dangerous than high-school romances and small-town mysteries, and Disney+ has found the director to make it hurt.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will direct the first two episodes of Disney+'s live-action Afterlife with Archie series and serve as an executive producer, Deadline reported on October 19. Disney+ has not announced who will direct the rest of the season.
The hire brings a veteran of Ryan Murphy's horror factory to Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe. Gomez-Rejon has directed multiple episodes of FX's American Horror Story, plus episodes of Glee and Prime Video's Hunters.
His film credits include Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2015, and the 2014 version of The Town That Dreaded Sundown, a slasher that treats the 1976 original as a real movie inside its own story.
Riverdale, Zombie Edition
The series adapts the Archie Horror comic created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla, which launched in 2013. Instead of milkshakes and love triangles, it serves up an undead plague.
The comic kicks off when Jughead asks Sabrina to bring his dog, Hot Dog, back from the dead. The spell works, more or less. Hot Dog comes back with an appetite, Jughead gets bitten, and the Halloween dance goes downhill fast.
From there, Archie, Betty, Veronica and the rest of the gang fight to survive as their hometown turns into a place where familiar faces become enemies. The premise drops Archie's recognizable characters and relationships into the kind of escalating horror more often associated with George A. Romero's zombie films.
The Riverdale Team Returns
Disney+ ordered the series in July, as CBM reported at the time. Aguirre-Sacasa is writing and executive producing, according to Entertainment Weekly's report when the project surfaced in 2025.
Jimmy Gibbons executive produces alongside him through Muckle Man. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman are attached through Berlanti Productions, and Archie Comics Studios' Jon Goldwater also executive produces.
The team knows this neighborhood. Aguirre-Sacasa developed Riverdale, which ran for seven seasons on The CW, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which ran on Netflix. Both shows pushed Archie's characters into darker and stranger territory than their traditional comic-book appearances.
Afterlife with Archie goes further. Rather than slipping bizarre mysteries into an otherwise recognizable town, the comic goes straight to full-scale apocalypse, where survival is far from guaranteed for anyone with a speaking part.
Casting Still Under Wraps
Disney+ has not announced casting for any of the central characters, and the streamer has described the show as a new version of the gang.
Former Riverdale star KJ Apa told Entertainment Weekly he has asked Aguirre-Sacasa about turning up in the new series, possibly as a cameo. Disney+ has not confirmed any role for him, and nothing announced so far suggests he would play Archie again.
Coming Halloween 2027
Afterlife with Archie is set up as an hour-long drama, and Disney+ is targeting the Halloween 2027 season for its debut. The streamer has not announced an exact premiere date, the remaining directors or a cast.
Are you looking forward to seeing Archie Comics embrace full zombie-apocalypse horror, or do you think the franchise has already moved too far from its original identity?
