During their annual TUDUM event yesterday, Netflix shared the first teaser trailer for Zoya Akhtar's The Archies, an upcoming Indian musical comedy-drama film based on characters from Archie Comics.
The young star cast, which consists entirely of newcomers, will feature Agastya Nanda as Archie Andrews, Suhana Khan as Veronica Lodge, Khushi Kapoor as Betty Cooper, Mihir Ahuja as Jughead Jones, Vedang Raina as Reggie Mantle, Aditi "Dot" Seigal as Ethel Muggs, and Yuvraj Menda as Dilton Doiley.
Following the release of the teaser, Suhana Khan's megastar father Shah Rukh Khan expressed his support for his daughter's feature film debut, commenting on Instagram, "For my generation I just remember how we used to try and get these comics especially the Digest versions on rent to read. Nostalgia….and I hope Big Moose is in the film also!!! Love and all the best to the whole cast."
No release date has been set, but it's slated for 2023, so we should expect the Hindi-language film to arrive on the streamer sometime before the end of the year, likely sometime in the Fall.
Zoya Akhtar is considered one of India's most critically and commercially successful directors, having helmed the dramas Luck By Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Gully Boy - which was also India's official entry to the 92nd Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film in 2019 - so The Archies is unsurprisingly one of Netflix's most high-profile international releases of the year.
