Amell, Guggenheim Offer First Teases of Arrow Season 4

Stephen Amell and Marc Guggenheim take to social media to give fans a taste of season four, including more focus on Team Arrow.

There is no question that Arrow star Stephen Amell and executive producer Marc Guggenheim, like him or not, do an amazing job of communicating with and keeping fans in the loop regarding the show. With production of Arrow’s fourth season right around the corner, they both took to social media to give us some early information.

First, Stephen Amell answered some fan questions on Twitter and Facebook. He told us that, like the previous breaks, the time passed between seasons will be five or six months.

“Time has passed. Like the standard amount of time. We go in real-time, like we normally do. So, five or six months have passed since the finale.”

We were also given a possible theme of the season’s first episode in this tweet:

Nothing was elaborated upon, but some are theorizing that maybe Thea is feeling the consequences of her mystical resurrection by Ra’s al Ghul’s Lazarus Pit.

Guggenheim decided to get in on the action the other day when he tweeted a photo of the script for the season four premier and yesterday he took to Tumblr to answer some spoiler-free questions regarding some of the themes we will see in season four.

Now, Marc doesn’t like to give definite answers, instead a fan will ask “Will X get more screen time” and he’ll say “I think you’ll be happy”or something along those lines — so these are all insinuated.

– More Diggle. In two separate questions, Marc leads us to believe that Diggle will be taking on the leadership role on Team Arrow with Oliver’s departure from Starling and that he will be seeing more action in the field. Unfortunately, no news about a potential mask or moniker.

Diggle

– Exploration of Felicity’s backstory. When asked about the potential of the show delving into the character’s history, Marc answered “Season 4 will make you happy” which leads us to believe that we will see more of Felicity in season four…great. In all seriousness though, I do think a solid backstory arc could put the character back in favor with the non-olicity crowd, but it has to be done right and if season three’s handling of the character is any foretelling of what we may see then I can’t say that I’m excited.

Felicity Smoak

– More interactions between female characters. A question that you’d expect on Tumblr, but it seems like we’ll be seeing some more scenes involving the female members of Team Arrow together, including Thea, Felicity, Laurel, and maybe Nyssa — can we call them the Birds of Prey??

Arrow

– The return of the Huntress..? When asked about the possibility of a Helena Bertinelli appearance, he said “I hope so!” As of now, I’d probably bet against it, but I would love to see Huntress come back to Starling and maybe even work with the team a bit. I know she wasn’t the most popular character but I think there is a lot of potential there.

Huntress

– A lighter tone. One fan correctly assumed that many fans were turned off by the angst and drama surrounding the romance between Oliver and Felicity. Marc was asked if season four would explore a more healthy relationship between the two and leave out the teenage drama. Marc’s answer to this was rather lengthy for him;

“…we as writers get tired of angst too and are looking to strike a lighter tone in Season 4.”

Arrow

This is a very important answer. Arrow became more and more of a soap opera with every episode last season. While it worked in seasons one and two, the dark and grim tone of the show doesn’t seem to fit with a universe that now includes a plethora of metahumans and a show that, frankly, doesn’t sport the greatest acting on television. I think that a lighter tone is in the series’ best interest and will distance itself from the Batman comparisons and allow for the full exploration the Green Arrow character and mythos.

AKA

The Flash is lighter, funnier and is shitting on our show... so we follow his path.

great article!I hope they don't have they don't do the same tired story of a vigilante killing people and team arrow has to stop them.They did it with huntress, Roy, and Thea already, I really hope they don't have Thea kill like Roy did.

@shazam37 I'm going to echo what abhi said. Impressive job formatting this article. It has a much cleaner look than most of the stuff on this site.

@Desr0w

It's cute you think it's because of The Flash.

You do know that they always planned on developing the series into something lighter, right? They weren't always going to keep the series dark because that's just not Green Arrow.

@Nomis with the words of wisdom.

What season 3 needed most was a more focused narrative and not play down to the fan shipping this much.

@Nomis

"The worst thing they can do is lighten the show up."

I disagree. I think the best thing to do is to lighten the show up a little, especially with the upcoming dynamic between Ollie and Thea when they're suited up. It should be different than the mostly serious dynamic between Ollie and Roy.

The angst and drama between Ollie and Felicity, while it did make sense while others would like to complain about it, needs to be different in S4 as well.

Many scenarios need to have a lighter feel as well, such as how Laurel is to be dealt with this coming season as even the Laurel and Ollie dynamic needs to feel different.

A darker tone made sense up until now because of how the characters are first portrayed, but now that the Green Arrow family has really grown this season with Black Canary and Speedy, I think a lighter tone is now necessary.

more of Felicity's backstory...god no, that was the worst episode of Season 3 when we got her story

lighter tone sounds good. and in a way, I quite liked the fact Oliver was ripping off from Batman, wasnt Green Arrow's early years in the comics in 1940s all about him being Batman with a bow and arrow...maybe now Green Arrow in the show can go through the transformation he went through in the comics when he became more of his own character

more Diggle annoys me...but I guess we are going get more of his story connected to HIVE so, makes sense

Birds Of Prey and potential Huntress, yes please

AND MORE FOCUS ON TEAM ARROW is what the show needs, less outside superheroes setting up spin-offs (leave all that to Legends Of Tomorrow)...wouldnt mind one of the non-powered heroes guest-starring for a couple of episodes tracking a villain to Starling City, but thats it...I like Routh as Atom but it got distracting during the season when the series should be focusing on the inner workings of Team Arrow & each of the character's relationships within the team...and of course the villains they face
