COMICS: Baz Suits Up In First Look At Geoff Johns And Doug Mahnke's GREEN LANTERN #13

Simon Baz made his debut in last month's Green Lantern #0, and in this first look at Wednesday's issue #13, we see him finally suit up as a clearly reluctant member of the Corps. Of course, when the President of the United States and the Justice League are after you, who can blame him?

Looking great. Mahnke's art looks REALLY good in this one, to my surprise.

Nice. The GL 0 issue featuring Baz was one of the best 0s. Really good.

I think Hal and Sinestro are in purgatory of sorts and seems can still communicate through the the ring since hal ring was just a construct of sinestro's.

And i don't think DC necessarily is supporting Obama just that he is the current president.

My interest in this comic book went from -10000 to +100 since they introduced this new Green Lantern.

comics - where minorities get hand-me-down super hero identities and never an original one of their own.

Would've made more sense to make a latin green lantern. South american, spanish, even italian would've worked. The latin demographic is so much bigger than the arab it's not even logical to compare the two. Least Aztec is good, though he's purely mexican and blue beetle, but their both predominantly background characters.

With supposedly a third of the population of the US being latin, you'd think they'd have a prominent superhero by now. No let's cater to that hungry arab market. And don't even get me started on Miles Morales.

Great art. I will pick up Green Lantern #13. Geoff Johns as a good storyline.

@monkeyballs

You didn't disprove the point of political correctness by saying that Geoff is half lebanese and created the character in his own image. They're adding diversity pure and simple, and they do not do so solely for artistic reasons. They're a business first and foremost, they exist to make money and to do so they must diversify to appeal to a wider market as well as maintain a reputation of equal treatment in a country with such strong racial tensions as america. Americans, I don't believe see it, as visitors do.

That aside, I maintain that as many latin fans DC comics has, at least one truly pominent character should be had. But none of that race-bending, an original one. A GL would've been all right, it's a corps after all(even though it baffles me that one sector would need more than one let alone 4 when when others only get one and are called away often enough). But let them take their time with it.

Exactly.

[frick] B'az. I miss Kyle Rayner. The best Green Lantern.

And [frick] off with all the debates about race. B'az is [frick]ing boring, that is all that matters from a storytelling perspective.

And so are Jordan and Stewart.

Woe, didn't realize all the arguing goin on up in here. Yeah I'm pretty sure they just put Obama in there because he is currently the President. To make it seem a little more realistic. Heh, if you can call a comic about a guy with a ring that can do anything he wills "realistic". Lol. And about Baz' race. So WHAT he's Arab-American? I don't get why people have to be so racist. Okay, clearly they're adding some diversity to appeal to wider audiences. Is that so wrong? And if Geoff Johns cares about this character and story, so do I. Actually, I already did. I never even cared that Baz is Arab-American. I'm just excited for the story and to see how the new character develops. I think everyone needs to stop acting like they're little children, and stop being partial, and if you don't like the new guy then FINE. But don't trash DC and people who aren't American because of it. Just leave this article before you something that provokes someone.

@toco89

Im sorry if Im not mistaken is isnt Kyle Rayner hispanic??? I know hes not a "major" charcater but hes an important green lantern..im not jumping on you in anyway dude

I think Baz is cool...just for the fact most arab people in the media are either portayed as terrorists or like kumar. Its good to see an heroic person of color no matter what... marvel has been better about this they have major heroes as people of color..Its just a shame the only way we'll see them is either the token diveristy character ie Cyborg, or as a sidekick ie Falcon. As a matter of fact I say instead of Jordan for the Justice League movie Do Simon Baz instead!!! You wanna finally beat marvel to the punch on the movie front and make history at the same time, this is away to do it!!!

Justice League Movie Lineup

Supes
Bats
WW
Flash
Green Lantern (Simon Baz)
Martian Manhunter

no aquaman unless u call him by another name (call him the Atlantean for petes sake)

Im more a dc fan than marvel but marvel is kicking dc's ass on the movie front other than Bats and Hopefully supes. DC YOU WANNA MAKE HISTORY SHOW DIVERSISTY AND BEAT MARVEL TO THE PUNCH... PUT SIMON BAZ IN THE JUSTICE LEAGUE FILM

Barack Obama in the DCU seems more level-headed than the fop in the MU who let Norman Osborne take control of everything.

I'm all for new Green Lanterns, even makes sense in some ways, but out of the entire Universe, it just so happens that there are now 5...count that, FIVE, Earth-bound Green Lanterns...who all just so happen to be from America? I'm from the USA so I don't mean to come across as anti-patriotic or anything, but seriously, do the rings only have the ability to choose American-Humans? I would've rather had read this had the new GL been from Iraq or Afghanistan, somewhere where shit is really bad. It's not like the book would even have to be written in another language for the "realism" effect because the rings have a universal-translator anyway.
duncboy
duncboy - 10/2/2012, 3:48 PM
As a side note, I'm also from a town over from Dearborn, MI (the origin-town of Baz for those who haven't read GL #0), so I'm 100% on board with this, but seriously, why are all GLs American? FFS there's even a French Batman!
