COMICS: Gail Simone Seemingly Forced Off BATGIRL

It seem those rumors of Simone leaving the title - unbeknownst to the writer herself at the time - turned out to be true. Simone has sent out a couple of Tweets that are sure to leave her legions of fans very disappointed. Read on for the details..

When rumors surfaced that Gail Simone might be calling it quits on DC's New 52 Batgirl title, the writer was quick to debunk them herself. But now it seems that Simone will be leaving the comic - but not willingly..

Plus..

This refers to an incident in Green Lantern #54 in which Kyle Rayner returns home to find that his girlfriend, Alex DeWitt, had been killed by the villain Major Force and stuffed in a refrigerator. Read into the response what you will! Whether this is following on from those initial rumors or just an unfortunate coincidence is unknown, but one thing is for certain, Batgirl - and indeed comic fans in general - will not be pleased. DC's New 52 relaunch had its share of duds no doubt, but Simone's work on Batgirl was a real highlight, and sold pretty well too, so this is quite perplexing. Simone will most likely make issue #16 her last as the 'Death Of The Family' arc reaches its conclusion. No word yet on who DC have chosen to replace her.

She actually has a past of good word such as writing Superman, Secret Six, and Birds of Prey.

DC Comics, what have you been smoking?
You obviously wanna smoke away all of your comic book sales if you're kicking a major part of the Bat Family Writer.
Snyder must defend her!

@Intruder

They had some good artwork back then, it's better than most of the artwork today, perhaps.

Gutless. That is straight up gutless. Didn't have the balls to bring her in and fire her in person. Didn't even have the guts to call her on the phone.

Gail Simone did a good job writing the Batgirl comics. It's to bad she is being forced out! :(

Well...maybe Batgirl will be decent now.
I like Simone, love her team books, but this is one of the comics by her that I absolutely hated (the other being her Wonder Woman which is weird given how good her work on the Wonder Woman movie was).
While DC is making plenty of mistakes...eh, this barely can rank among them.
I mean, Simone's "LEGIONS OF FANS" tend to just barely keep her books above the point of cancellation and that's it. Sure, that doesn't speak for quality (especially given that Batgirl is probably her beststelling work, but at the same time far FAR from her best), but I'm just pointing out, that the level of fan love she gets is not nearly as large as the internet makes it out to be. It's just that some people online are rather vocal in how much they like her work. But the people that support her online because they like her or because she is a woman but don't buy her book...they don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. They don't help anyone. Sales matter. It's a sad fact, it's why Snyder is dominating DC these days (and he is one writer I'm not exactly a big fan of...then again, Marvel snatched most of the writers i like....it's tough days to be a DC fan)

So Starlin's going to write Batgirl...You know, because the timing of both Simone getting fired and Starlin 'taking over a title' seem related.....

If you believe in conspiracy theories,of course....

Eventho I think it is a wrong idea to take Babs out of the wheelchair, Batgirl was one of the few really good reads of the New52.

Unfortunetly, a gutless move by DC by just emailing her. Grow some backbone and have a meeting. Or, at least, call.

Ahh the "New 52" way to drop good writers! Glad I am not reading any of DC's books, they don't deserve my money!

That being said, I may have to pick up Batgirl on Amazon.

Honestly, do people think Batgirl can get any more offensive in terms of writing Babs? Simone's current version of Babs is weak, incapable, acts like a child and where Oracle fought the Joker, new Babs starts crying because she sees one of his goons. That's not exactly empowering. (and I still can't comprehend that the fantastic classic BOP Babs and this wreck are written by the same person!)

I don't see a problem with firing by email. It's not like she and the editor live up the street from each other. Often times they're on opposite sides of the country.
A phone call would have been better, though.
If you can't reach her by phone then, yes, email.
It's still better than texting.

paptschik well, this version of Babs is not over getting shot and beeing in a wheelchair. so, no, PTSD is not offensive.

@Battabing phone call. Common cortesy.
paptschik
paptschik - 12/9/2012, 2:57 PM
There is PTSD and not getting over a storyline. And it's not just the Joker thing (even though the book barely seemed to feature anything else in it). Babs, as a whole, seemed so much more imature, which especially shows when she is next to Black Canary. Where it seemed like they were friends, equals, it now seems like...the obviously less mature little sister of Black Canary.
To me it just feels like a fantastic and strong character was changed into a weak character for a rather boring and pointless story.

I wasn't reading Batgirl but seems like they lost another good writer, that's what? Like 7 now? I wonder how many people will be left when this is all said and done?

DC is slowly dying one writer and artist at a time. No one is going to want to work with them considering this track record, unless the big heads running the company are fired or something.

I don't mind updating costumes and a few other changes but the new 52 has done more bad than good. The older fans are pissed and don't even read from them anymore, the newer fans they've gained were mad because of the continued change of creative teams like every [frick]ing week.

Gail if I were you I'd go and create my own stuff at Vertigo or just leave DC altogether and go over to Image or something and just make your own original characters. follow in the footsteps of Robert Kirkman [frick] the BIG TWO they're not worth it these days.

maybe its batgirl that is going to die. her response to the question about not stuffing enough girls in refrigerators kind of points to it to if you look at it in the right light. Possible dc didn't tell all the writers who the death was going to be, or lied to them about who it was to make sure a leak didn't get out, and now babs is going to be killed, maybe this time with a monkey wrench instead of a crow bar ala jason todd.

paptschik from what i could gather it was the first time she confronted the Joker after the shot. She seems to have been deaged. So, it makes sense she's not over it (beeing the first time she confronted the Joker) and not beeing equal to BC.

Now, her being younger, Canary not being younger. Is one of the many mistakes of this New 52 (still think she was a better character as oracle...)
