DC REBIRTH: The Cover For ACTION COMICS #988 May Spoil Mr. Oz's Identity

Fans of DC Rebirth have been fervently speculating about Mr. Oz's true identity for months. Is he Ozymandias, another character from the Watchmen universe or someone who hails from the DC universe?

Th two-part Action Comics miniseries from Dan Jurgens, Ryan Sook and Viktor Bogdanovic promises to reveal the identity of Mr. Oz to DC Rebirth fans but advance solicitations for the series may spoil the mystery before the issues are released this September.

Mr. Oz, the mysterious figure who has abducted Tim Drake, Doomsday and more has at times helped various DC heroes and at others, proved a deadly adversary.  Just how is he connected to Doctor Manhattan and what is his role in the current fractured state of the DC universe?

Many fans assumed that Oz was short for Ozymandias, Doctor Manhattan's fellow Watchmen, but a lenticular cover for Action Comics #988 [via Bleeding Cool] appears to reveal that he's Superman's biological father, Jor-El- abducted by Doctor Manhattan just seconds before Krypton's destruction.

If you've been keeping up with the mystery of "The Button" and the ever advancing DC Universe showdown with Doctor Manhattan, what do you think about this development?

Previously at last month's SDCC, Geoff Johns teased that his Doomsday Clock event series would be about Superman, so Oz turning out to be Jor-El lines up.  The question now is from what continuity was this Jor-El abducted?

So that's what he said...

@LEVITIKUZ -
Yep.
It's entirely possible that he's Jor-El.
Or a version of him.
He knows too many things, and he is kinda the world's ( Krypton) most intelligent person.
Just like Ozymandias! :P

I can't wait to read it. But it's not a two parter is it? AC#989 also has a lenticular cover and follow the Oz effects. Rebirth is amazing!

Getting pretty close to Action Comics #1000. Hopefully they recreate the #1 cover.

@Doomsday8888 - WB should have planned better and got out Man of Steel 2, to go with that big hallmark.

Yeah or even Justice League.
November is really close to 2018 godammit...
Man of Steel came out for Supes 75 anniversary tho.

@Doomsday8888 - I agree, Justice League would have worked too.

@jerryblake - what happened ? i'm confused.

Pretty much the Rebirth story in a nutshell lol

The whole point of Rebirth & its story is actually brilliant IMO. The story is pretty much saying "Watchmen ruined DC & Marvel comics".

Since Watchmen, DC & Marvel have tried to emulate the gritty, realistic, & tragic vibe of Watchmen simply because of how well received & big Watchmen was. An example from Marvel would be the entire Civil War story.

What Rebirth is saying is how on a more meta level since it came out, Watchmen influenced DC's universe & it was a mistake because the characters in the DC universe & Watchmen universe are completely different.

Let's that's how I see it

@LEVITIKUZ - That's the meta level, yes. But on the story level, I have to say that DC has used this opportunity very well to bring back characters and elements from pre-New 52 continuity, which fans have been desiring.

@LEVITIKUZ - Great observations! I've always felt that Moore's work always carried a subtext that basically urinated on the very concept that someone could be a "good guy." I hate that kind of cynicism and people who equate "real" with "corrupt."

It was a good theory, especially considering what happened in their (Supes and Lex)last confrontation, but look at the first image posted in the comment section, Mr.Oz has hair, so...

I want a huge overarching story leading up to AC #1000

I seriously need to catch up. I'm months behind on my reading. I'm afraid some of my books may be catching some dust. There's just not enough time in the day for me...😔

@MarsivNayr - Me too...70 issues deep right now. I need to cut that stack DOWN!

@Lostcause - I think I'm around the same number. It's crazy, Rebirth is the ONLY thing in comics history that has gotten me to pick up nearly 20 titles a month. Granted, I can afford it now, but still. It's phenomenal. All of the ones I pick up keep firing on all cylinders. I even have a few regrets for not picking up some others.
Lostcause
Lostcause - 8/4/2017, 1:03 PM
@MarsivNayr - Me too. I get Flash and all the Bat titles. Plus all the #1 issues. I'm not a big fan of Supes, but love Supergirl. Wonder Woman is good too. I get most of the Marvel titles, but Rebirth has be really good. I just got finished Casting...Metal looks real good, as does Doomsday Clock, which I will pick up. I'm working on paying off 6k in comic debt...then I'll rack up another 10k I'm sure get all the Rebirth back issues. .

MarsivNayr - 8/4/2017, 1:52 PM
@Lostcause - daaaayuuuum. I recommend Supes though if you're interested in the idea of him being a Father now. Plus his strained relationship with the league and Batman; not to mention he is an important element in what is going on with Rebirth.
Titans is phenomenal as well. Never knew how much I missed Wally since Barry has sort of always been my flash.

@Lostcause - P.S. What do you see as my avatar?
Lostcause
Lostcause - 8/4/2017, 2:12 PM
@MarsivNayr - Super Sons is good #1 and 2. I've been told Supes is good, just haven't been in to him since they killed him in the 90's. I like the first few issues of Titans and Berry mentions Wally often. Plus I love Damian Wayne. Looks like Talia helps Bruce out in Casting and might help out later. I should probably get a 4th job or 1 that pays like 4...

Lostcause - 8/4/2017, 2:13 PM
@MarsivNayr - looks like Spawn to me?
MarsivNayr
MarsivNayr - 8/4/2017, 2:27 PM
@Lostcause - super sons is awesome. And Damian is a little 5hit, but I love him too. I need to read teen Titans still.

Don't stretch yourself too thin. 4 jobs sounds more stressful than needed.

And wow... I deleted that spawn pic days ago. Weird.

Lostcause - 8/4/2017, 2:45 PM
@MarsivNayr - It takes a few tries to get a new Avatar. You are not the only one with that issue. Yeah...I'd have to work 24 hours a day for a 4th job. I just like to collect comics and movies. I work 65-70 hrs a week now. I have for about 7 years. I do have a killer collection, and thank the comic goods for paid vacations.
MarsivNayr
MarsivNayr - 8/4/2017, 2:53 PM
@Lostcause - my my. I would buckle under that much time on the clock. My mind and body are used to 40 - 50 hrs a week. Good on ya, man, I hope. Hope it's not to your detriment.
Lostcause
Lostcause - 8/4/2017, 2:57 PM
@MarsivNayr - Not really. Minus a social life, all is well. I only wanna make an extra 20k in the next 2 years then, back to 40-50.
MarsivNayr
MarsivNayr - 8/4/2017, 3:03 PM
@Lostcause - can't argue with that. G'luck to you on this venture.
