What are the main ingredients of a good movie? A solid cast? A good plot? A solid script? In all honesty, all these play a major factor in the making of a good movie. However, I believe having characters you truly care about trumps all. You can have a movie with cool effects and great action but if you find yourself not caring whether a character is going to die or not there is a big problem. In the world of movies or more specifically comic book movies, its really tricky for the death of a character to be effective; especially when the character keeps appearing dead for a few seconds and wakes up just fine or fakes his or her death. But even when a character is permanently dead, it may not hit home with me (Rachel Dawes).
So read below to see the CBM deaths that hit me hard and what emotion it got out of me.
Emotion Evoked: Shock
Another character from the Watchmen movie. Established early on as a close friend of the new Nite Owl, Hollis Mason (the old Nite Owl) doesn't get a whole lot of screen time. He only shows up three times in the movie yet when he is murdered by a gang of thugs who want to settle a rivalry, my blood boiled. I don't know what is was that got to me so much. Whether it was my sheer hatred of gangs or the unfairness of the fight, I just can't put my finger on it. One thing that might have made me feel better was to see the low lives tossed out a sky scrapper. However, the only type of retribution we see is the new Nite Owl punch the teeth out of someone dressed in the same fashion as the gang member and while that was enjoyable, the fact that we never saw them punished in any way bothers the crap out of me.
