AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 Introduced A Terrifying New Villain Who Could Change Peter Parker's World Forever

Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man #1 featured a lot of big surprises but a backup tale revolving around Mysterio points to Peter Parker's world being changed forever. Hit the jump for further details...

Nick Spencer's first issue of Captain America was surrounded by a huge amount of controversy when it was revealed that Steve Rogers was secretly an Agent of HYDRA. However, his and Ryan Ottley's Amazing Spider-Man #1 is all about making fans happy and it not only presents some huge twists and turns about Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's relationship but introduces a key new villain.

You can find details on all of that below and with Dan Slott's lengthy run finally at an end, it's now apparent that Spencer has some big plans for the wall-crawler and intends to change his world in a huge way (we could even be about to see the end of "One More Day"). So, to check out all the biggest reveals from the issue, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button for these spoilers...

A New Spider-Man Villain

During the course of the issue, we finally learn that Mysterio's story about being brought back from hell was true and that some sort of demonic entity is responsible for that. However, he has his sights set on Spider-Man for reasons unknown and says that he and "Pete" go way back. Clearly, Nick Spencer is planning to drastically change something about the wall-crawler's past by involving this villain.

What that will
be remains to be seen, of course, but Spencer is clearly going to address a huge mystery about Mysterio's resurrection which has been unanswered for years. We'll have more on that later...

Peter Parker And Mary Jane Reunited

By the time the issue ends, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson are seemingly an item again after sharing a kiss and it appears as if Spencer is planning on putting the spotlight back on these two despite Dan Slott saying their marriage will not be brought back after the events of "One More Day." Whether or not they'll actually get married is another matter but this romance is something fans have wanted to see return for a long time now and the writer is delivering on that in a major way now.

The End Of One More Day?

There are a lot of hints about Marvel finally bringing "One More Day" to an end at some point in the near future because "Brand New Day" is referenced and Peter frequently talks about there being something missing between him and MJ. Now, with a demon from hell looking to torture the wall-crawler, could he be the one who helps bring an end to Spidey's deal with Mephisto and restore Peter and Mary Jane's marriage? The signs are certainly pointing to that being a very strong possibility.

Peter Parker's New Teacher

During the course of Amazing Spider-Man #1, Peter Parker's degree is stripped from him after it's revealed that he plagiarised the work of Doctor Otto Octavius (the truth of the matter is that he was in control of Spidey's body at the time). However, by the time the issue ends, the wall-crawler is given another chance by the university because a teacher there has argued in his defence. Much to his horror, though, Peter learns that's Dr. Curt Connors in his full-on Lizard form! This will be interesting...

Am I the only one that can't get into this because the art is too 'cartoony'?

@GeneralZod - It reminded me of Bagleys art for some reason so I really enjoyed it.

@GeneralZod - It's not the greatest art, but it's good enough. Spidey can get away with cartooney.

@GeneralZod - I hated it too. It was like reading a Disney comic.

The artwork wasn't my piece of cake and I have huge trust issues regarding Nick Spencer. But even though some of the writing seemed kinda off, it was a solid enough first issue for me to give this Spider-Man run a chance.
Pete and MJ being back together is the biggest plus so far, the new villain interests me and looks pretty cool and if this run erases One More Day it has high chances becoming one of my favorites on the ASM series of all time.

One more day finally coming to an end, thought I'd never see the day. My god how I have hated that story.

Shouldn't it be "Drastically Change Peter Parker's World" or something like that?
Saves it sounding like a generic Marvel event that always claims the same thing that it'll Change the Marvel Universe Forever! Until the next even that'll Change the Marvel Universe Forever! For real this time until the next one that'll claim the same thing.

OMG- just when you think it can't get any worse...
Just like DC is there anything or anyone in Marvel that is professional anymore??
The art is sub-par, the writing is sub-par. Christ, this makes that Romita run during the late 60s look Rembrandt-esque.
This is positively tragic.
I guess good help is hard to find.

@rocketeuropa - Did you actually even read the issue?

Let me guess.
He's the one who shot uncle Ben?

@Zoinkberg - he going to be Uncle Ben.

@Zoinkberg - That's what I think. He will be "The Burglar" who shot uncle Ben and once even partnered with Mysterio to kidnap Aunt May. He died of a heart attack thinking spidey was going to merc him. It's definitely him. Good call.

Say what you will about Spencer, but the man know how to write Spidey’s villains. I’m so pumped for this run, especially after the years of mediocrity (except superior) from Slott.

@DENNISsystem - I thought Dan Slott was great all the way from Big time to superior (might be mis-remembering a few things, but I remember I enjoyed them). I liked the premise of the post-secret wars ASM, but it never fully hooked me. Superior Foes was great, spencers ant man i've heard is great, loved his cap and secret empire, and I'm already on board his ASM run!

Spencer set up a decent mystery here, but his dialogue kind of ruins it. And the art is really tough to look at. I'll follow it for a minute, but hopefully they can find a better writer to take over soon. Spencer had one hit with Superior Foes, but he hasn't done anything good since then. Maybe that's why he crammed Boomerang into this ASM run.
I haven't guessed yet who the mystery villain is. Maybe Demogoblin? Swarm? It definitely ties back into Spider-man/Deadpool #5. Whoever powered Mysterio up in that fight is the mystery guy.

This was honest to god one of the best Spidey comics I've read in years.
