AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #50 Features Green Goblin's Return And One Of The Title's Most Shocking Twists - SPOILERS

Amazing Spider-Man #50 swung into stores today and, as well as bringing back Norman Osborn as the Green Goblin, there's a game-changing twist which turns the wall-crawler's world on its head. Check it out!

Ever since Norman Osborn's sins were supernaturally cleansed, he's been a force for good in the Marvel Universe, both as the ethical C.E.O. of Oscorp and as the heroic Gold Goblin.

To ensure Norman wouldn't fall into old psychotic habits, Peter agreed to work for him at Oscorp and the two have since bonded. However, thanks to Kraven the Hunter, the former Green Goblin's sins recently returned and inhabited Spider-Man for a time.

That turned him into a very sinister Spider-Man, leaving Norman and Kraven to use a sci-mystical spear to remove the sins from Peter. Or did they? Norman has been acting strange lately. But, then again, so has Peter.

In today's Amazing Spider-Man #50, The Living Brain begins malfunctioning and declares, "Peter Parker Is Not Spider-Man." It also prints out a series of random words which, when read in Norman's office, reveal his cache of Green Goblin weaponry.

With that, we learn the Goblin is back and fully in control. He proceeds to depower and beat Spider-Man, though the wall-crawler fools the villain into taking him to his laboratory. There, he manages to dampen the Goblin's abilities, only for us to learn that The Living Brain's message was a warning, not a statement.

While Norman's sins were in Peter's mind, he used the brainwashing Winkler Device to toy with Peter's mind and turn him into a fellow Goblin (similar to how Ned Leeds was fooled into becoming Hobgoblin by Roderick Kingsley).

It's a shocking development and one which gives the Marvel Universe not one, but two Green Goblins. This is another major status quo shift for Spider-Man and, while we don't expect it to be permanent, this story has a distinct Superior Spider-Man feel to it.

This whole storyline of evil being a tangible thing that can be removed and is making peter actively evil...

@Origame - Marvel, always with the finger of the pulse of what fans crave......

@Origame - I mean, despite absolutely believing evil is mostly relative besides serial killers & fascists (same thing), I don't mind it in fiction really. It's just guided energy coded to rewire the brain to be evil.

@RC5616 - but then where's the character arc and redemption?

Norman went from a psychopath to a borderline saint simply from being stabbed by a magic spear that took his evil away. And spiderman went from being one of the most moral superheroes ever to just as bad as the green goblin by getting that evil into him.

It's lazy writing that removes the character from the characters in order to put them in a position they'd never normally be in.

@Origame - Well, to be fair, I dated this girl once who ended up being pure evil and I'm pretty sure it's due to the multiple shots of warm gooey evil she got from her previous boyfriend (who was a total douche). So there's that... 😳

Fantastic artwork, Ed McGuinness never disappoints. Wish he would go back to hulk though

ASM is completely in the gutter at the moment

@Twenty23Three - They should've gotten Hickman or Ewing to write it, or courted Rick Remender.

@soberchimera - Hickman wouldn’t have stuck to their ‘Peter can’t grow up and be a real person’ thing. His ultimate Spider-Man is no doubt what he would have done with regular Spider-Man.

@soberchimera - Couldn't agree more, I loved Remenders Uncanny X-Force.

So Spider-man has been Dr. Octopus and now the Green Goblin.

This issue and the following 2 issues that complete the story were just AMAZING!

Spider-Man No More! Gee that'd make a great movie!

I particularly liked (SPOILERS) Frederick Foswell's sacrifice. All this time J.Jonah Jameson's believed in him and has given him a second chance as a reporter at the Bugle (he was once the Big Man, the original Kingpin) and the fact that he betrayed Jameson to Fisk was heartbreaking, so for him to take a bullet for Jameson was an excellent way to end this story. Really powerful stuff.

canon event!

And I though the Kingpin was a great new villain. I hope they make him the main bad guy of a Spider-Man movie one day.

I was hoping they'd finally reveal that Norman Osborn was actually Gwen Stacy and that Peter Parker was now cis het for her she dick and that this was perfectly normal.

The Spidey Editorial Board strikes again!

They just love making Spider-Men miserable, don’t they?
