AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Marvel Comics Teases A Shocking Goblin-Themed Status Quo Shift For Peter Parker

Marvel Comics has teased the beginning of a new era of storytelling in Amazing Spider-Man starting this October, but is the Green Goblin truly about to make his long-feared return? Read on for details...

Zeb Wells' Amazing Spider-Man run has divided fans, primarily for its villainous take on Ben Reilly as Chasm and the fact Mary Jane Watson has found a new love interest in a guy named Paul.

For those who have spent years waiting to see Peter Parker rekindle his romance with Black Cat, however, there's been plenty to love about the series (and it's not as if Wells was the one who decided Ms. Marvel should die in the pages of Marvel Comics' most popular title in order to later resurrect her as a mutant).

Love it or hate it, more twists and turns are on the way this October, something that's evident from the solicitations for Amazing Spider-Man #35 and #36.

The reformed Norman Osborn was recently injected with the Goblin Serum by Doctor Octopus and it appears the Green Goblin might be about to rear his ugly head...but will it be Peter who dons the suit this time?

John Romita Jr.'s cover below certainly suggests that might be the case, though it's possible Norman could make use of the tech he's created for Peter. It's said that issue #35 "sets up the next 24 issues of Amazing Spider-Man," while the synopsis also warns readers, "Do. Not. Miss. This."

Patrick Gleason will be on art duties, while Ed McGuinness steps in for the following chapter. In that, "Spider-Man has never gone this dark. Now the consequences are unravelled. Will New York ever look at him the same way again?"

Intriguing stuff, eh?

For anyone not enjoying this run, we're not sure what Wells has planned next will change any minds. However, for those that have been hooked from the start (and we'd highly recommend checking it out), this could be a perfect jumping-on-point.

Take a look at this new Amazing Spider-Man cover art by McGuinness and John Romita Jr. below.

Aye it might be time to let Peter move on

We’re really stretching thin on the stories rn

The problem with all these constant status quo shifts is that none of the new “status quo” last long enough for it to really become the status quo. So instead of these stories actually shaking things up it just becomes the latest trend that a particular character is experiencing until the next major “status quo” changing event…which will inevitably be within 2 months.

You’d think they would make some new creative villains for Spider-Man instead of using the same old villains over and over. I get it that they want to use characters that have probably proved to sell better but why not cross over a villain from another heroes series that Spider-Man has yet to face. Like maybe Spider-Man vs any X-men villains, Spider-Man vs the hand or Spider-Man vs crossbones? Oh well, gotta use the hype machine to build up the Sonyverse characters that might get used in another spidey related film.

Cant believe I'm saying this but maybe the point of this run is for us to wish that Peter, Norman and Octavius are written out of the mythos completely. They've become so redundant at this point that its, frankly, a bit embarrassing.

Peter Parker in the Goblin suit is nothing new.

So why did JR JR knock off his own cover of ASM 250?? Running out of creative juice?

This is why I stopped reading comics. The need to make everything over the top and have these long mystery arcs with payoffs. Who's behind the mask? Will this death be permanent? Who is the real bad guy?

What's next? A new super-powerful Rhino that turns out to be Aunt May. She kills the Kingpin, becomes the new crime lord and it totally changes the Marvel Universe forever when she kills Thor (the regular Thor, not the girl Thor who previously changed the Marvel Universe forever). At least until a new writer takes over and then everything goes back to normal with a lame explanation?

The first cover looks good but I wished they didn't mess around too much with Peter and MJ. It's been unnecessary.
