Avengers #1 Leak Features A Spider-Man Moment That Could Change Everything — Spoilers

Leaked pages from tomorrow's Avengers #1 have surfaced online, and the series will address the events of Amazing Spider-Man's "One More Day" storyline in a huge way if what we see here is any indication.

Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto's Avengers #1 goes on sale tomorrow, and some pages from the opening issue have already leaked online. As expected, the series will address "One More Day" head-on and potentially set the stage for a reversal of the controversial 2008 storyline.

As a reminder, in the aftermath of Peter Parker unmasking during the events of Civil War, The Kingpin hired an assassin to kill Aunt May. She was gunned down and hospitalised with no chance of recovery, forcing Spider-Man to make a deal with Mephisto.

In exchange for his and Mary Jane Watson's marriage, May's life would be saved. Peter and MJ agreed, and their married life still happened...just without them ever tying the knot (Mephisto rewrote history, leaving neither with any memory of what they'd done). For a time, it looked like Nick Spencer might undo the storyline during his Amazing Spider-Man run, though editorial interference soon ended that.

With Mephisto set to be the big bad of Zdarsky's Avengers, could the writer be the one to finally restore Peter and MJ's marriage? It may be too late for that, but in this leak from the first issue, Spider-Man finally learns he made a deal with the devil—despite having no recollection of it—and that it was May he saved.

This unravelling of Peter's deal with Mephisto could be huge, and even if it doesn't lead to him and MJ suddenly being man and wife again, the revelation that he gave up his marriage will likely send shockwaves across his world.

Zdarsky is no stranger to writing Spider-Man and has already made him the leader of this new team of Avengers. The writer clearly has big plans for the web-slinger, and must be working closely with Amazing Spider-Man scribe Joe Kelly to figure out what the hero's future looks like.

We'll have more on Avengers #1 for you tomorrow. In the meantime, check out these leaked pages below.

I feel really bad for Spider-Man. Not only will he remember that he was married to MJ and really loves her, but still remember all the other chicks he banged during that time. His Spider-Guilt-Sense will be going into overdrive.

@hainesy - I'm sure Spider-Man writers will find a way to make it all about his quilt over Gwen.

But all the deals went up in smoke in the last issue of Cap. It could be that all that takes place after Avengers #1 though because when Cap finally woke up the world had changed.

It seems that Zdarsky's Avengers run, whether it's a long or small arc, will definitely now address the deal that affected Peter and MJ's character in OMD. However going by an interview from last week that he gave it would appear that he is only doing this to bring to the forth as part of the fallout of Mephisto being dethroned from Hell along with all of his deals being nulled by the efforts of Captain America and Doom which resulted in the latter's taking over as the new ruler of Hell.

It does not appear that it is within Zdarsky's intention to restore their marriage in his Avengers tenure.

I will leave the link to said interview here. @JoshWilding

I first found out about this from these tweets so I took screenshots of them that highlighted some parts of the interview like the origin of the new Miracleman and the part of him not being that interested in taking the responsability of fixing the SpideyMJ marriage:

Tdlr; the nature of the OMD contract is part of the Avengers storyline but whether it's gonna be restored or even end up being properly addressed depends on what happens during Joe Kelly's current run in the Amazing Spider-Man comic. So the ball is in his courtyard, meaning we'll have to pay attention to what happens in ASM in 2027.

All we know so far is that 2027 will feature a crossover event called Crisis in Faith where Peter will clash with Miles and not much for now. Right now looking at how May might be targetted by Mephisto's fallen angels makes me wonder if this won't be later be an excuse for Peter's petty and sociopathic evil cousin Cormac/Ravage to come up with the perfect reason to keep May under his eye like it recently happened in the last story arc.

Time surely will tell.
