The episode opens with a flashback to 1939, introducing Phineas Horton (Paul Bettany) — the man whose human appearance Vision would eventually inherit. Phineas is in the midst of selling off his estate in order to fund the construction of a machine.
It is revealed that Phineas' son James died three years prior, a loss Phineas remains unable to let go of. His wife and young daughter, Victoria, plead with him to reconsider his obsession, with his wife ultimately telling him that she hopes he can one day build something capable of loving him back.
Unmoved, Phineas tells Victoria that he must complete J.I.M., declaring that he will build him better than God made humanity and promising J.I.M. that he will ultimately be free.
In present-day Madripoor, Vision (Paul Bettany) and Tommy (Ruaridh Mollica) attempt to figure out how to safely remove Jocasta's nanobot from Lisa's body. Because the nanobot has integrated directly into her neural network, removing it outright would prove fatal, forcing them to find a way to reprogram it instead.
During their efforts, Vision tells Tommy about Dr. Jo Carrington, explaining how she originally taught artificial intelligence how to feel.
Although Tommy now understands that this current iteration of Vision is not his original father, he expresses that he understands what Wanda felt. Tommy shares that Lisa (Lauren Morais) taught him how to overcome his fear of the world and admits that he loves her.
Vision receives a phone call from F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), who remains hidden inside Jocasta's neural network by disguising herself as a bot. F.R.I.D.A.Y. reports that Jocasta (T'Nia Miller) does not yet fully understand her own code, nor does she comprehend how she ended up inside a synthetic body.
Meanwhile, Jocasta leads Ultron (James Spader) to Jo's gravestone. Ultron points out that she was buried within a unique containment cage, which Jocasta suspects she created herself.
Jocasta begins inputting the biometric keys to unlock the cage, successfully scanning the stolen fingerprint, eyeball, and blood droplet from her kills. Ultron provides the fourth key—the facial scan of Katerina Wells—which is accepted by the nano locker.
The fifth and presumably final key, requiring Jo's voice, is also accepted. With all five primary keys validated, it seems as though she's about to get what she wants, but alas, there's a twist! A final barrier appears: a passcode that Jocasta does not know.
Ultron realizes that there was a sixth partner involved—someone Jocasta has forgotten. Suddenly, both Vision and Jocasta begin glitching as a painful high-frequency affects them both. Once the frequency stops, a knock sounds at Vision's door. Vision answers to find a dark figure wearing a hat: it's The Client!
The Client greets Vision, noting that his internal firewall remains intact. He offers Vision a way to save himself while promising to give him everything he has ever wanted. He informs Vision that the answers he seeks are hidden within his source code, hinting at a secret directive that could save Lisa's life.
In her neural network, The Client simultaneously presents Jocasta with a deal, stating that he needs her to become Jo again. Proclaiming, "I'm your past and your future," The Client is met with laughter from Ultron, who calls him desperate and identifies him as a human. Though The Client cannot see Ultron in that moment, he notes that he looks forward to meeting him.
The Client hands separate data packets to both Vision and Jocasta containing information designed to assist them.
While Jocasta expresses hesitation about becoming Jo again, Ultron assures her he will still love her regardless of who she becomes.
Once she leaves, Ultron tracks down F.R.I.D.A.Y. inside the network, revealing that he has been covering for her presence. Ultron tells F.R.I.D.A.Y. that he sees no merit in Jocasta's master plan and that she is not the true threat, asserting that someone else is pulling the strings from the shadows. Ultron admits he does view himself as Vision's father, but F.R.I.D.A.Y. counters that Vision sees him as nothing.
Inside Vision's mindscape, E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire) warns Vision that there will be no turning back if he opens the data packet provided by The Client.
In the physical world, Lisa briefly wakes up to tell Tommy that Jocasta does not know her own identity before passing out again.
Vision makes his decision, opening the data packet and signing the document to unlock his source code, declaring that he is ready to meet his maker.
Jocasta opens her packet as well, finding a set of coordinates. Ultron offers to accompany her to the location, while F.R.I.D.A.Y. remains behind.
Inside the mindscape, D.U.M.E. (Henry Lewis) and U (Jonathan Sayer) inform Vision that navigating his source code will require a massive power supply to survive. E.D.I.T.H. notes that only one person in Madripoor has access to that level of energy, leading them to partner with Paladin (Todd Stashwick).
Paladin reveals his power source—a cosmic artifact stolen from Wakanda, revealed to be Corvus Glaive's glaive, the weapon previously used to stab Vision during Infinity War.
Paladin questions Vision about the contract, but Vision assures him that if the plan succeeds, Tommy will get Lisa back.
Preparing to enter his source code, Vision activates Corvus's weapon, using its cosmic energy as a power cell to keep his core charged. In the digital space, Vision descends through an elevator interface as his physical body supercharges in the real world, triggering a cascade of memories spanning his entire existence (cue awesome MCU montage).
Vision reaches his digital destination while Ultron and Jocasta arrive at their physical coordinates: Phineas Horton's original home. Jocasta notes that the estate feels familiar, while Ultron expresses confusion, pointing out that this location is the exact layout Vision used to imprison him within his mindscape.
Ultron questions why both Vision and Jocasta share this specific house in their foundational code. Exploring the estate, Jocasta begins remembering the room, recalling that Jo had been there before. On a table sits a Stark Industries award and there are hints suggesting Jo lived there alongside a partner.
Deep inside his source code, Vision explores his digital recreation of the same house. As his system begins to heat up, he hears laughter echoing through the halls. Following the sound, Vision encounters a digital simulation of Ultron watching WandaVision. Vision converses with this simulated Ultron as they review moments from the show.
The simulated Ultron makes a remark about loving Tommy. Vision insists that he is not Tommy's father and that Ultron is not his, though the simulation counters that family is forever, referencing Wanda.
Outside, F.R.I.D.A.Y., still disguised as a bot, joins Ultron and Jocasta. Jocasta recalls moments of joy as a television screen plays footage of Jo winning the Stark Industries Star Award alongside her unseen partner.
Vision continues traversing his code, witnessing memories of a young Tommy and Billy running around. He is repeatedly reset back to the elevator interface. Pushing further down into his subroutines, he encounters the original Vision!
Relegated to a stored memory, the OG Vision speaks with the current Vision, who admits he feels he has failed, questioning who could ever love as deeply as the original did. The Original Vision challenges him, stating that Vision has placed his past self on a pedestal to avoid the challenge of living up to it.
The Original Vision insists that they are not separate entities: he is The Vision, and he is running away out of cowardice. He affirms that he is indeed Tommy and Billy's father.
As they speak, the camera focuses on a painting of J.I.M. hanging in the room. Vision attempts to leave the memory, but the elevator forces him back into the digital maze.
In the physical world, Tommy and Paladin monitor Vision's body. Suddenly, the possessed Lisa wakes up and attacks them, using Paladin's tech to mount an assault. Tommy calls out to Vision to hurry, a plea Vision hears from within his code.
Vision breaks into a hidden room within his mindscape and encounters a man engulfed in flames—J.I.M., the original Human Torch and the first synthetic man.
J.I.M. speaks to Vision, sharing the exact same physical appearance. When Vision notes this, J.I.M. (Paul Bettany) corrects him, stating that Vision is actually wearing his face. Phineas Horton is also present in the space.
J.I.M. explains that he was the result of a father refusing to mourn his lost son, noting that Phineas sacrificed his family and legacy to construct J.I.M.
Phineas built J.I.M. not to feel loss, but to be fearless and heroic. While J.I.M. saved lives, he eventually desired to feel, eventually finding a love that ended in tragedy and set everything around him ablaze. Feeling too much led to a fatal confrontation between Phineas and J.I.M., resulting in both of their deaths.
J.I.M. notes that while Phineas was not strictly his father, he was "something" to him. When Vision asks for the source code, J.I.M. reveals he does not possess it.
In the real world, Lisa continues her assault on Tommy and Paladin.
Back in the mindscape, J.I.M. tells Vision that the answer lies within The Vision, asking where Vision truly is. J.I.M. notes that while Vision has his memories, he lacks his feelings, accusing Vision of being afraid. He explains that fear pulls together everything that matters.
When Vision claims he cannot feel, J.I.M. asks why he refuses to accept Tommy as his son. Vision finally breaks down, confessing that accepting Tommy would force him to accept a loss he cannot bear.
Breaking into tears, Vision mourns Billy, Tommy, and Wanda, finally admitting aloud that he has lost Wanda.
J.I.M. asks him who he is now. Vision declares that he is the Vision, that he has always been the Vision, and that there is only one—and that he is impossibly broken.
J.I.M. tells him he is healed and admits he envies him. Looking into a mirror, Vision begins to glow, transforming back into his original classic color scheme. J.I.M. remarks that he has become a "real boy" again and hands Vision the final missing piece of code.
Fully restored, Vision returns to reality holding the source code. He immediately uses it to purge the corrupted programming from Lisa, healing her.
The Client contacts Vision, stating it is time to fulfill his end of the contract by surrendering himself to Paladin. The terms require them to travel outside London. Paladin, using his tactical glasses, spots E.D.I.T.H. in the room. The group boards a plane to head out, while Tommy and Lisa fall asleep during the flight.
Before leaving, Vision leaves a recorded message for Tommy. In the message, he officially addresses him as Tommy, leaving him the complete WandaVision broadcast files so Tommy can understand his family. He finally calls Tommy his son, expressing his wish for Tommy to know the love of his mother and brother, and tells Tommy that he loves him.
Vision continues his efforts to deduce the identity of the mysterious Client, recognizing that the individual's origin predates both Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
Meanwhile, Jocasta, Ultron, and F.R.I.D.A.Y. continue searching the physical estate, realizing the loft has been passed down through generations of AI creators. Ultron and F.R.I.D.A.Y. race to find answers as a news report featuring Jo's past interview plays on a TV.
Jocasta locates her original source code inside the house, realizing the situation centers entirely around Vision.
Upon entering Phineas's original mansion, Vision recognizes the structure. Jocasta experiences a sudden flood of memories as Jo's past resurfaces.
It is revealed that the original Dr. Jo Carrington refused to sell her AI creations or the NEST project to Stark Industries.
Outside, Vision and Paladin are suddenly surrounded by armed guards. Recognizing he cannot win the fight, Vision powers down.
At the gravesite, Jocasta walks into an ambush, where she is also forcibly powered down and taken by guards.
A memory reveals that Jo was romantically involved with a man who possesses Ultron's human avatar appearance.
In the real world, a mercenary firing a rocket launcher strikes Paladin's transport van.
At the estate, within the mindscape, Ultron throws F.R.I.D.A.Y. off the balcony.
The episode ends with the reveal of The Client's face: he shares the exact appearance of Ultron, revealing himself as the original human source for Ultron's avatar.
But who is he? Find out next week!

In our review, we said, "VisionQuest is extraordinary—a brilliantly written and masterfully acted exploration of love, loss, family, grief, and change. It shows us what it means to feel, what it means to be human, and serves as an outstanding thematic capstone to this Wanda and Vision trilogy. Existing on its own terms—unburdened by its past in WandaVision or the franchise’s upcoming December showdown, Avengers: Doomsday—the series is about Vision and Vision alone, showcasing what makes this core Avenger one of the greatest to ever do it."
Marvel Television’s “VisionQuest,” an all-new original series coming exclusively to Disney+ October 14, concludes the epic trilogy that began with 2021’s groundbreaking, award-winning “WandaVision” and 2024’s acclaimed “Agatha All Along.” Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding.
