COMICS: Daniel Way Talks In Detail About The Roster Of The Marvel NOW! THUNDERBOLTS

Talking to Newsarama, writer Daniel Way (Deadpool) has addressed his and artist Steve Dillon's (Avenging Spider-Man) new Thunderbolts series which will be launched this December as a part of Marvel NOW!. Below are a few highlights from the interview, but be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page in order to read it in full. How do you feel about the new team line-up? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

On The Premise Of The Marvel NOW! Thunderbolts Series:

Yes; this is not "another X-Force." This is also not a covert ops team. When the Thunderbolts hit a target, they'll do so in the loudest way possible. Separately, on their own, these characters were waging open-ended campaigns. Why were they on their own? Why has no one stepped in to help them? Would not the world be a better place if organized crime was eliminated, or The Hand summarily wiped out? Whether due to indifference, moral quandary or political agenda, there are pockets of infection throughout the MU that have been allowed to fester and grow. This team of Thunderbolts exists to cut out that infection, wherever it is found. They do not recognize boundaries or borders, be they moral, political or geographical. They can and will strike anyone, at any time, without warning. They are the consequence of evil deeds, pure and simple.

On Why 'Red Hulk' Is A Member Of The Team:

Red Hulk is the metaphorical 800-pound gorilla in this situation. He's also a former general with decades of battlefield experience. Only Red Hulk has the capacity to lead this team, and only Thunderbolt Ross has the clarity of vision to effectively deploy them.

On Why 'Deadpool' Is A Member Of The Team:

Though he's not a mutant, Deadpool is a member of X-Force for one simple reason: He's a killer. That's not, however, why he's a member of the Thunderbolts. Red Hulk has plenty of killers, already — what he doesn't have is someone versed in non-linear tactics. Red Hulk — Ross — knows every play in the book but what Deadpool knows isn't in the book. That being said, Deadpool does kill a whole lotta people in this series.

On Why 'Venom' Is A Member Of The Team:

Previously, Flash Thompson was given an incredible weapon to use... and was then told not to use it to its full potential. This was not acceptable to Flash or the symbiote. Within the Thunderbolts camp, however, there are no such restrictions.

On Why 'Elektra' Is A Member Of The Team:

Well, none of these characters are really "team players" but Elektra is definitely a standout in this regard. Elektra remains on the same path she set upon when her father was murdered, the same path that has led her time and again to her own death. Her motivation is to reach the end of that path... alive. And for that, experience has taught her, she'll need allies.

On Why 'The Punisher' Is A Member Of The Team:

Punisher's involvement — why Red Hulk wants him on the team — is actually an important plot thread in this series. After all, he's the one character on the team without any superhuman or supernatural powers. He's just a man, committed fully to a course of action that will surely lead to death and failure... and yet, he soldiers on. Does this make Punisher less human, or more? Suffice it to say that "salvage" is a term never far from Thunderbolt Ross' mind.

I've read a portion of Punisher comics (Mainly 90's War-Journal/Blood-Bath stuff), but Frank seems like the type of dude, that if a guy, especially a member of the Avengers, much less General Freaking Ross came up to him asking him to join a team, he would grab his revolver, shove the barrel in his mouth, and pull back the trigger and pull out a cig and say some catch phrase.

This will be a kick ass team, period! With players like the punisher, venom (both having that miltary background)and arguably the most dangerous women in the MU on the team in Elektra, not to mention DP and his crazyiness, I'm lookin forward to the first issue.

I'm excited about everything except Dillon. Just can't get into his art. Maybe it'll grow on me but right now he just draws a lot of weird faces.

Sounds like a really cool mash-up. Venom, Deadpool and Punisher together has awesome potential. Too bad Daniel Way is writing it! I was so happy that he was finally off of the Deadpool series, and he's right back! BOOOOO!!

My favorite quote, just incase he needed to clarify:

"That being said, Deadpool does kill a whole lotta people in this series."

@Dagirg

Deadpool was never a mutant.

Aww I wanted bearded Punihser. he looked pretty cool. Cover art makes him look like a mob enforcer. That being said I really like this team.

sameoldthing - 9/13/2012, 6:36 AM
The Punisher is bar none the toughest Marvel character,he's only human but takes damage & keeps on killing sum-bitches.

Deadpool,Wolverine & many others even Cap & Spidey have enhanced healing to some degree.
Not Frank, even when he's taken physical damage that would shut down most men he continues on.

He's deadlier than any of them even Elektra because she relies on that ninja mumbo-jumbo stuff & sorry but bullets beat blades.
