COMICS: Get Your Calculator Out Because Marvel Is Renumbering Its Titles...AGAIN

Over the past few years, comic book readers have been bombarded by new #1s by Marvel and while the Legacy initiative gave titles back their original numbering, that's about to change. Read on for details!

Yesterday, it was revealed that Marvel is looking for a "fresh start" in 2018 by overhauling its titles and launching another wave of #1s. That latter point was met with horror by fans sick and tired of endless relaunches but the belief is that after so many of those, fans, casual readers, and retailers were all left confused when comics jumped up from a number like #30 to #695 in the course of a single month.

There are, however, plenty of people who have welcomed this return but new #1 are on the way and that's bound to upset some. "Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be rolling out new beginnings for a few of our key franchises — new creative teams, new starting points, new storylines — all the big stuff that we’ve been building towards since Marvel Legacy began," Senior VP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort explains. However, there is a silver lining which goes some way in clearing things up.

Despite reports that the Legacy numbering is about to vanish, he added that, "we’ll be maintaining the classic Legacy issue counts as dual numbering on these titles as well." That definitely feels like a happy medium but considering the fact that many found fault with Marvel's maths when it came to the "original" numbering of many Legacy titles last year, two of them on covers might make things worse.

What do you guys think? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on that in the usual place.

Dual numbering?! Are they joking? This is when Marvel can't sell any comics these days.

@Nightwing1015 - If they used sub-titles on the comics like the movies ie: Captain America: Civil War, then they could renumber as often as they want. There doesn't need to be a flagship Avengers title, but if there dos then use the legacy numbering. It isn't hard, damn.

As much as I hate starting at 1 over and over again I can’t argue that it actually works and is likely to not be going away any time soon.

Clusterf*ck.
Imagine what will happen with Avengers #700.
They were SO close, and now...back again with #1.

I also heard they want to make dual numberings which is just hilarious imo.

I really hoped this new Editor in chief would save Marvel but...i'm not so sure anymore tbh.

Each title should have a subtitle and the comic numberings should be chapters. Captain America: Secret Empire #1-6, collected as "Captain America: Secret Empire"

This way Marvel can have it's cake and eat it too by just changing the subtitle every 6 issues and relaunching with a new #1.

@crawley - This is actually a great idea.

If they ever do decided to do another reboot/relaunch, all they would have to do is use the subtitles to differentiate like you suggested.

Dual numbering should solve all the problems people have with the numbers. It should make everyone happy.

Marvel Marvel Marvel.....smh. They just can't make up their minds. Just get back to writing good stories then your books will sell more.

@Cyclonus - Exactly!! And great artwork too. This all reminds me of all the stupid "collector's edition"/polyfoil embossed, etc. covers of the 90's. It's all just a stupid gimmick to try and sell oodles of comics, and the only people who really fall for this crap is little kids - and that only happens once or twice - and then THEY become cynical of this whole schlockfest.

Are the same people working on these comics that insulted their fans, called them any "-ism" and tried guilt-trip their customers into liking badly written "diversity" quotas?
Are Dan Slott, Heather Antos, Mark Waid, Gabby Rivera etc. still working for you, Marvel?

Otherwise:

Marvel Comics: "#1" for all the wrong reasons

I've said it time and time again. Just do both. Keep the long numbers and start doing what the MCU does and give the comics sub headers, and treat it like your crossovers so that folks can easily come in and read specific arcs, while providing an easy way for people to keep track of what's going on. For Example: Ironman: Extremist 1-18(501-518). That way people can be like read this run on ironman. You can keep selling your #1s but at the same time it's easier to find out what comes next

Instead of renumbering their comics, they need to renumber their staff...

“That definitely feels like a happy medium but considering the fact that many found fault with Marvel's maths when it came“. Josh Wilding thinks that a plural form of ‘math’ exists that is achieved by putting an ‘s’ at the end of math?? 🤷🏻‍♂️
