Thanks to MTV Geek, we have the following early designs of Captain America's new costume by artists Jerome Opena And John Cassaday. Both of them will play a major role in Marvel's NOW! relaunch with Opena working with Jonathan Hickman on The Avengers, and Cassaday teaming up with Rick Remender for Uncanny Avengers. Also below are comments from editor Tom Brevoort on the redesign, although you can find much more by clicking on the link below. Bear in mind that these are just some of the initial designs and that the final product will look a lot more like the costume seen in the finished promo images at the very bottom of the page.

"The approach and the thought was very simple: we wanted to modernize Cap’s outfit so as to reflect the gear worn by actual soldiers, to convey that sense of the character visually. Every costume design change is really change for change’s sake, and certainly Cap’s costume is a classic. But that said, it’s been updated before, and so long as what we ended up with still looked like and gave you the silhouette of Captain America, that was what was important to me. We just did years of stories in which Bucky wore a variant of Cap’s costume, and people were able to accept it just fine, and still recognize and react to him as Captain America. Same thing here. We weren’t really thinking about the movie incarnation per se, though it’s difficult to avoid it I suppose. But even there, Cap’s already had two completely different suits in the movies, in CAP: FIRST AVENGER and then in MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS. What we were really going for, more than anything, was the feeling of Cap being an actual soldier. At the outset, I did some research and collected a bunch of different photographs of modern military gear, helmets and what-have-you, and they all informed the design we eventually settled on."

I think it's solid. Hexagons are a thing of the future.

the 3rd one looks pretty solid, but these look way too detailed for just a comicbook appearance. Maybe these could work as potential suits for future Cap movies

I like the military aspect. And the hexagons on the armor that bring the scale mail look into the modern era. That said, it's a bit too armory. Definitely like the first one, and if ther was a way to mix the bottom and top pics I'd be good.

that's gonna be a bitch to draw consistently, issue after issue. Deadlines must be met; that's one of the main reasons Spiderman got the black suit in Secret Wars - artistic simplicity. Hyper-detailed costumes bog down productivity. The first one reminds me of Urban's Judge Dredd suit.

That's really original. Next they'll have Cap kicking some poor dudes teeth out while he's down and asking for a hand getting up.

Second suit, Third helmet look best... just my opinion

Are they trying to use the look from CATFA and incorporate a new design or ???

First one is the balls. The last is boring and dated. Leave it to Cassaday.

that first helmet look with the big googly eye sockets looks VERY lame and the chin strap looks dorky. Too much inspiration from the Avengers version which looked underwhelming at best. People keep saying that costume looks practical? Some of it is but a lot of it is cumbersome. I assume Cap has better than average hearing so why are they covering up his ears making it hard to hear. I suppose they could add some electronic mic and speaker to relay audio but thats really silly unless your ironman.

The Gloves look like something an astronaut might wear. Realistically everytime he has to pick something up that takes even a minor amount of finese he will have to take off those bulky thick gloves.

It is practical though from the standpoint its one of the first functional superhero costumes that has a fly so they can take a leak without taking off their pants.

The bottom one is the best of the 3 so if they have to go with one the bottom one is dealable. I suggest losing the chin strap though in any version.

I love all these designs. I hope they use these in mix with Whedon's suit to create a new one for Cap: Winter Soldier.

The suit looked ok in The Avengers, but just barely. It really needed more thickness. More bulkiness. More BADASS

I had no problem with Caps outfit in Avengers...I preferred his First Avenger suit though.

Pretty much ripped off the gloves and boots from the Avengers movie outfit. I like the idea of modernizing and 'grounding' Cap's suit but I feel these designs work best for live action rather than the comics. It's comic art, it shouldn't look TOO realistic, have some fun with it!
