I think words like "stunning" and "epic" get thrown around a bit too freely 'roundst here. Ross's cover is decent but anyone who's seen Marvels or Kingdom Come knows that's far from his best work.

But, I find myself bitching too much about Marvel's artwork lately. Especially Ramos' overly-stylized silliness. And wow, are Goblin's and his glider's proportions atrocious. And why is the back of Spidey's head pointy? And why does he look like he only weighs fifty pounds?

ARGH. I'll shut up now.

Does Alex Ross think it's still the 1950's? Why does he draw Peter Parker like that?

Also, someone said this in another Ross related post, but I think his artwork is hurt by the fact that we have now had several comic book related movies over the years. His artwork used to be the closest we would get to seeing these super heroes brought to life, but for the past few years we've been getting movies with Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman. I just don't think his artwork has the same impact it once had.

As always Ross gets the essence - the slightly sinister feel of the original. Over time Spidey has become the class clown, and while quips were always part of his makeup, he also originally had a sinister edge in Ditko's rendition, that's been lost over the years.

One of the best things about the Raimi Spidey was that moment when you saw the sinister, not-human side of him in his final fight against the Goblin.

Don't really like the Green Goblin one. Goblin's face is too calm. Even the body language for both characters lacks intensity.
