“A Nation Under Our Feet,” the yearlong story line written by Mr. Coates and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze, is inspired by the 2003 book of the same title by Steven Hahn. It will find the hero dealing with a violent uprising in his country set off by a superhuman terrorist group called the People.
Marvel faithful, the author of
Between the World and Me, is your new Black Panther storyteller. But there's a difference between being an acclaimed novelist and a comic book writer. That difference is something Ta-Nehisi Coates acknowledges and ultimately hopes will lead to a refreshing reader experience. Marvel has already pre-committed to a year of the series. Said Coates,
"It’s going to be a story that re-positions the Black Panther in the minds of readers. It really moves him forward."
On the character and history of Black Panther, Marvel E-i-C Axel Alonso added,
"He has the baddest costume in comics and is a dude who is smarter and better than everyone."
The comic title is thought to debut in 2016, coinciding with Boseman's debut as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. The Wakanda royal family member will receive a solo MCU film in 2018 from Marvel Studios.
