COMICS: Marvel NOW! Goes BATTLE ROYALE With New AVENGERS ARENA Series

It seems we were all way off with that "Survive" teaser from last week. The first issue of Avengers Arena hits this December, and Marvel spoke to Dennis Hopeless and series editor William Rosemann about what - and who - we can expect to see. Rosemann throws a few names our way, while Hopeless assures us that we will most definitely lose of few of these unfortunate youngsters as the series progresses..

William Rosemann: "Fans of AVENGERS ACADEMY will hopefully be excited by the next chapter in the lives of Hazmat, Mettle, Reptil, Juston and his Sentinel and X-23. Speaking of schools, who are the Braddock Academy? After his last appearances in War of Kings and NOVA, Darkhawk soars again! Staying with sci-fi, just wait until you see what Dennis and Kev have planned for Annihilation’s Cammi, baddest girl in all the galaxy. And last but certainly not least, direct from the pages of the dearly missed RUNAWAYS, we have Chase and Nico!"

Dennis Hopeless: "We really got to cherry pick our cast. That was a lot of fun, almost as much fun as creating the brand new characters. I have a feeling the Braddock Academy kids in particular are going to break some hearts. Not sure if we made it clear yet, but people die in this book."

This came out of the blue. I love the obvious Battle Royale inspiration this thing is going for. I'll check it out.

However, I can see fans of obscure Marvel characters absolutely hating this. This will defiantly be controversial amongst the fringe groups on the net.

Can anybody name them?
xcrementus
xcrementus - 9/13/2012, 9:37 AM
Avengers Academy: Reptil, Hazmat, Mettle, X23 (CBR names Juston & Sentinel)
Runaways: Nico & Chase

Darkhawk too (CBR names Cammi from Annihilation...was wondering where the hell she ended up).

Whole bunch of new characters too apparently.

X-23 will rip them to pieces

to be fair, post-War of Kings Darkhawk could totally rape the majority of this cast. his suit is the living tits.
On the other hand, X-23 can hardly die.
also, Nico has magic.
I declare, the 3 top contenders! haha.

S'okay. the dead weight has got to go.
Besides . . . they can come back later, rejoined as Mutant Galactus to feed off the vacuous anti-energy of no one caring.

lol "i guess Marvel dont care about their fans".
"good job being worse than the new 52 before it even starts."

Man, people's stupidity blow my mind sometime.

EVERY convention, you have people wanting Runaways, they ask about Darkhawk, they ask about the Academy kids....
Now you have a series where they ALL have a place, and it gets hated on lol.

Darkhawk, Nico and Chase. count me godamn in, man. let the fun and bloodletting begin!!

X23: "wow, you made short work of Darkhawk, Nico. well, time to kill you."
Nico: "hocus pocus, your clone is a bloke-us."
X23 looks confused.
Nico: "abra cadabra, you're cooler than Sabra?"
X23: "you die now." STAB

This book would replace Avengers Academy, so not really adding to Avengers books.

@xcrementus
The main reason some people are upset is because their favorite C list characters could end up dead.

People gotta realize that obscure characters will always have a target on their backs. Always. It never fails. We have plenty of examples that support this.

I love the concept now with Marvel Chacters. Hunger Games rips Battle Royale and it was an ok trilogy. Now Marvel is on the Battle Royale band wagon. Now I have to buy a lot of back issues so I can learn these newer heros. Anyone have any recommendations on where to start?
xcrementus
xcrementus - 9/13/2012, 10:34 AM
@mpdcop:
Runaways vol 1
Avengers Academy vol 1
those are your best bets. Also War Of Kings:Darkhawk if you can track it down.

@Bruce:
unfortunately yeah, that's always gonna happen. If ith appens to characters that have past their mileage i'm not so fussed though. Hazmat and/or Mettle, i'd be okay with dying.
Reptil i think still needs more fleshing out, he has potential down the line.
X23 still has a journey ahead of her. Same goes for Darkhawk.
Chase could die, he was the fun loving guy, then became the slight more mature guy. His arc could be all done.
Sentinel Juston, he was fun while he lasted but i dunno, has he got that much mileage?

@mpdcop Have you ever heard of Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited? For $60 a year, you get access to over 10,000 back issues, which is a great resource for catching up on ongoing series, read entire crossover events (I'm halfway through Civil War), or researching for upcoming films (Guardians of the Galaxy). All of this for the price of 3 paperbacks!

Go to Marvel.com and I bet you can catch up with these!

How long is the book slated to last? Seems like a shallow idea. I only care about Darkhawk, Cammi, and X-23. Kill the rest.

How does Cammi get back from space? is it out there or yet to come?
