COMICS: New Artwork Featuring 'Angela'; Todd McFarlane Comments On Her Marvel Debut

Marvel have released new Sara Pichelli artwork from Guardians of the Galaxy featuring 'Angela' debut in the Marvel Universe, while a press release accompanying it includes comments from co-creator Todd McFarlane and the news that Neil Gaiman will now be a consultant rather than co-writer.

In 1993, Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane teamed to introduce the heaven-sent warrior Angela into the latter’s Image Comics series Spawn. With her striking appearance and layered mythology, the character stood as a testament to what can happen when two unique talents pooled their skills in the spirit of creation within the comic book medium.

Two decades later, Angela made a splash in the most unlikely of places, capping off the status quo-shattering AGE OF ULTRON #10 with her first Marvel appearance. As she moves forward into this month’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5—written by Brian Michael Bendis and featuring art by Sara Pichelli with Gaiman himself overseeing—this one-of-a-kind character will rock her new surroundings and serve as a gateway to unforeseen corners of the Marvel Universe.

“Good stories and good characters are the backbone to our comic book industry,” says co-creator McFarlane. “I believe the Angela character can be one of those characters. Neil Gaiman has proven himself to be a much sought after author and I am sure he will bring some of his ‘magic’ to this character, whether it be as the actual writer himself or through his ‘Gaiman guidance;’ readers should be in for quite a ride.”

While other creators will be carrying the torch for the time being, it can’t be denied how much of Angela’s strength in character and concept come from McFarlane himself. A pioneer and unparalleled creative mind, the man who helped define Spider-Man’s modern appearance and took the wallcrawler to new heights in the 90’s infused Angela with the same energy and depth. With Gaiman—an acclaimed voice across countless fields who has garnered awards and respect and each of them—also funneling his genius, the character has the highest pedigree imaginable.

“Todd’s prescient creativity has always propelled him a couple of steps ahead of the pack,” says Dan Buckley, Marvel Publisher & President: Print, Animation & Digital Divisions. “The fact that Angela can step right into the Marvel Universe at such a critical time and command such a crucial presence is testament to what he and Neil collaborated on all those years ago.”

You can next spot Angela this month in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5 and follow her journey throughout the Marvel Universe in the years to come.

Does anybody else think she doesn't really fit in the marvel universe? At least put her in a cool new ghost rider series. That's my 2 cents

So Gaiman isn't writing anymore? WTF?!? They might as well have released a statement about how this story will suck now.

I don't get the fake excitement? who cares about this character? The only good thing was that Gaiman was writing and now Marvel have [frick]ed that up.

Without Gaiman who gives a shit

@RJ4651....

That was my initial thought too. A character like Angela is tailor fit for a book like Ghost Rider.

But it would be a little too close to Spawn, seeing as Spawn and Ghosty are very similar character types.

Angela looks great and I've always like the character, however i doubr she'll have as huge as an impact as MARVEL is thinking she'll have with readers. It'll be interesting to see how much of the characters back story will remain intact since she has such deep religous background being an angelic warrior and all....and MARVEL usually strays away from God and Heaven in their stories.....idk, we'll see

She would definitely fit in Asgard, and if they tie her in there they might as well make her an asgardian. I'm a huge fan of the early 90's spawn series, mainly because the art was so innovative at the time. I just think Angela was way more relevant in the spawn series than she could ever be in the marvel universe. But who knows, she may turn out good.

i'm tired of all the praise marvel's heaping on McFarlane. Go back and read any of his work, it's not interesting, not well written, not well drawn, and he's arrogant as hell about himself. I loved Spawn when I was 10, recently bought a collection of the first 12 issues and was floored by how bad and bland it was.

Fantastic artwork! Angela looks badass! I do hope they make her an Asgardian. It seems like the best fit for her.

You know it's a female artist that drew this because Angela's body looks more like an actual woman's body.

Her waist is more proportionate with the rest of her body. Some male artists draw women characters with a super skinny waist and give them big boobs and a big ass, which makes them look ridiculous. That's not how women look in real life.

My only gripe looking back at this is her upper arms should be bigger and toned.

It ought she was a magic based character? Being an seraphim and all, so it's weird seinfpg her in a syfy comic.
Unless she's been completely re written as an alien now.
Like when I saw the windstorm characters enter DC52.

I agree with all you Asgard people out there; she would fit in there. But I don't really have any problems with her in the cosmic section either with her bein an angel warrior and all. Holy abilities seem to fit right in on the whole cosmic scale. Can't wait to pick up Guardians and see how this goes!

She's a Wonder Woman knock-off, not some new, unique creation from the minds of two creative geniuses blah blah horse shit.
