COMICS SPOILER: A Major Marvel Death In SQUADRON SUPREME #1

COMICS SPOILER: A Major Marvel Death In SQUADRON SUPREME #1

Marvel and writer James Robinson have come right out and spoiled a massive death from the first issue of Squadron Supreme, which will be hitting shelves this December. If you've been following the events of Secret Wars, you might well guess which "hero" goes down...

After pretty much transitioning from anti-hero to full-on villain, Namor is sent to the big fish pond in the sky courtesy of Hyperion in the pages of Squadron Supreme #1. The Sub Mariner was responsible for the destruction of Doctor Spectrum's reality during Secret Wars, so in this first issue the team head to Atlantis to make him pay... and pay he does, dearly. Here's a preview and some quotes from James Robinson on the decision to kill-off this character, courtesy of Comicbook.com.

It was a combination of a couple of things. One, it speaks of Squadron Supreme's mission statement. Which is that they really are this hard-line group that will not put up with anything or anybody who will detract work. And also, it was kind based on the fact that Namor destroyed Doctor Spectrum's world. And was basically in the last few years Namor has crossed the line from an anti-hero to something a little bit darker. I mean we’ve seen absolutely no remorse whatsoever from him lately.

Of course, death is never really death in comic books - but this one might just stick for quite a while. Check out the full interview with Robinson at the link below.

At first, this kind of pissed me off, then I remembered this is Marvel. He'll be back in a couple of years.

(Still a little mad, though)

Well with what he did in AvX and how he was in New Avengers it seems its been a long time coming. Of course he will be back so I don't see what there is to get all upset about.

Well Marvel had been slowly writing this classic anti-hero into a villain for some time now, so this doesn't surprise me one bit.

He'll likely be back in a coupla years.

Meh. He'll be back.
I won't take comic book death seriously, until they kill off Aunt May and stays dead permanently.

Universal has either full rights, or distribution rights at the moment. I can't remember which.

Should have Killed off Hyperion forever. That character freakin sucks so bad

I take it you've never read Supreme Power? Hyperion/Everyone Else is amazing in it... (at least in the first 18 issues).

Gah, why did I have to think about how awesome Supreme Power is?! It only just makes me angry that the series fell off in quality so steeply and then was never finished.

Such a good set up for a dark examination of Justice League pastiches, and then...

...I expect this as Marvel being in works to helm in some capacity a movie wheter they have rights or with whomever has'em...it has happened before; in the other hand, this was no surprise since Namor was being all villanous & stuff...but falling through Hyperion's?...well...
