IRON MAN Goes Back To Basics In New Comic Series From Christopher Cantwell, CAFU, And Alex Ross

It seems like every time Dan Slott leaves a comic book, it needs to be rebooted, and that's the plan for Iron Man this fall as Tony Stark once again dons his armor and returns to the Marvel Universe!

Press Release

New York, NY— June 12, 2020 — This September, Tony Stark will be going back to basics and putting the MAN back in Iron Man! Acclaimed writer and producer Christopher Cantwell (Doctor Doom, TV’s Halt and Catch Fire) and international superstar artist CAFU (Jane Foster: Valkyrie) will be bringing Marvel readers a new age of iron, including an all-new suit of armor designed by legendary Marvel painter Alex Ross. Don’t miss your first look at the series in the Iron Man #1 Trailer!

"I’m over the moon about getting a shot at writing the Golden Avenger. Since Bob Layton’s art in the 1980s captured my imagination as a kid, I’ve been fascinated by Iron Man, and in this new story run I’m aiming to explore the question: who should Iron Man be today? An angel? A god? Or just a humble man?" said Cantwell.

"Tony’s going to try and strip the idea of Iron Man all the way down to its metal core, something that will constantly be at odds with his giant ego. We’ll see if he can truly keep his arrogant self-image in check, even as others with god complexes set their sights on the entire universe."

Tony is putting away his high-tech toys and high-profile image so he can get his hands dirty again. But can he really lay that Stark-sized ego down?  Life isn’t always that simple, something that old friends and frustrating foes are quick to point out.  If you strip a billionaire down to his bolts, does he run solid…or just overheat?

For answers to these questions, along with a thrilling new era of rock-solid super-heroic action and adventure, do not miss Iron Man #1 when it soars into comic shops this September!

Alex Ross and the creator of the hugely underrated HALT AND CATCH FIRE (once it stopped trying to be a Breaking Bad meets Mad Men mix)?! Sign me up.

@Reasonnnn - I enjoyed that show as well. Thought Lee Pace and Mackenzie Davis were really good in it.

Good, much like most of Slott's other offerings it started off okay with some okay ideas but quickly devolved into a flaming train sailing off a cliff and needs to quickly be exorcised.

Cantwell's Doom has been ... okay, I guess. It's nothing extraordinary, nor an abomination or anything. Maybe a little above the middle of the road read while waiting on books you're more invested in. Liked his Mask, though.

@Reeds2Much - Never got the Slott hype. So many of his comics feel really sophomoric

@tmp3 - I never knew there was hype for him, lol. I liked his She-Hulk and his Silver Surfer was a cute little adventure, and he does have some good ideas so I can't find myself outright hating him. He just can't execute.

And he's kind of a dick on twitter. His (too much) time on Spider-Man really went to his giant head.

@Reeds2Much - What ticks me off is that Marvel turned down Rick Remender's pitch in 2009 for Spider-Man in favor of Slott to become head writer in 2010. Then again, we still got Uncanny X-Force from Remender instead, so I guess I should be grateful, but Remender's run on Spidey could've been epic, he's such a better writer than Slott.

The last few years of Iron Man in the comics have been so awful and convoluted that honestly you can only go up from there. I know comics do that to established characters very often but with Tony it lasted longer and got weirder than usual. That cover looks amazing & I'm digging the new look.

I was really looking forward to Iron Man 2020. Unfourtunatly Marvel and Slott screwed up and left us disappointed. Makes me wish they got Warren Ellis on it instead. Never had any issues with Slott until his Iron Man run. Maybe it's time for him to hang up his pen or go back to focusing on minor characters.

I’m in the middle of reading Dan Slott’s Tony Stark:Iron Man run. Man this entire run has been a bore so far.

As long as Slutt doesn't have it anymore, that's the important thing.

I thought... Isn't Arno Stark Iron Man now? And wasn't the Tony who thought he was Tony actually discover that he's a "biological construct"/clone with implanted memories; and then he died? Where is the real Tony Stark?

@SANSHORYU - I haven't finished that arc yet, but I'm pretty sure Arno faked Tony being a clone, so he could declare him legally dead and steal his business. I think the Tony that came back is the real deal who's been tricked into thinking he isn't. But I was really looking forward to Arno being Iron Man for a long while, so I'm disappointed.

@SANSHORYU - but wasn’t Tony evil and eventually replaced with another younger Tony circa prior to Onslaught? The point is that continuity was getting bad in the mid to late 90s (clone saga anyone) and it’s only become more so with these stories designed only for a “look what I did” moment before trying to right the boat. I don’t bother reading much past invasion anymore.

It's upsetting that Stark is already back. Marvel readers have been waiting for the year 2020 to come so we could finally have Arno take over. It was supposed to be his year. His time in the suit was cut way too short, and that AI story arc was weak.
Major bummer.

Nothing special here. Move on.
Other than Ross, NO ONE on this book would have been good enough to get past Stan Lee's door when Marvel was at its peak in the sixties.
This is embarrassing.
