Marvel Comics Artist Greg Land Pays Homage To Gwen Stacy SPIDER-GWEN: GWENVERSE Launch Next Year

Gwen Stacy is returning in an all-new series titled Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse. In that, Ghost-Spider will travel through time encountering different versions of herself, and Greg Land's covers are...amazing!

Yesterday, Marvel Comics announced that Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Ghost Spider, will return in her own series next February. Written by Tim Seeley with art by Jodi Nishijima, Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse will follow the hero on a journey through alternate realities where she'll meet different versions of herself.

When Gwen Stacy was bitten by a radioactive spider, she gained arachnid-like superpowers and started a crimefighting career as Spider-Woman (or, as she’s affectionately known to her peers, Ghost-Spider). But what would have happened if she had picked up the enchanted hammer, Mjolnir? Or if she received the Super-Soldier Serum? Or built a high-tech suit of armor?

Those are questions this series promises to answer, and Marvel Comics has now revealed a series of gorgeous variant covers for the limited series by superstar artist Greg Land.

Paying homage to his now-classic Edge of Spider-Verse #2 cover (Spider-Gwen's first appearance) we see the hero in various costumes, including Spider-Man's. Oh, and if you're wondering what the deal with the cape is, that's Nightbird, Gwen's identity in the Heroes Reborn: Night-Gwen one-shot. We also see her suited up as Wolverine, Spider-Gwen, and her original 616 counterpart.

Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1 is set to be released on February 9. Check out Land's covers below:

@dragon316 - There will be about 50 variant covers,it's the Marvel way. So expect them both to have a cover.

@KingdomUniverse - She's Gwen Poole from a version of the real world where Marvel characters only exist in comics and movies, so when she accidentally arrives on 616 she can break the fourth wall like Deadpool and know everything about everyone and the mechanics of the format and storytelling, giving her a unique advantage as a mercenary.

But I always hold out hope that she's technically a Gwen Stacy due to some maiden name somewhere down the line.

Covers #3 and #2 are pretty cool. I don't see the problem with art

@bkmeijer - That's the problem with Greg Land. Any individual image might look fine, because he traced a pose that already looks fine. But he can't tell a story to save his life because 80% of the panels are just him reusing the same hundred or so pre-traced drawings. It means there's no thought put into any character's posture or expression and making it fit the scene. None of the characters look distinct because they all have to be interchangeable generic porn models. Reading a Greg Land comic is like trying to decipher a lazily edited meme.

Lots of artists use similar techniques Greg Land (though not to the same extent), and they can still create interesting and engaging visual stories. But Land's relentless recycling of the same drawings erodes everything special about the comic book medium into this featureless homogenous mediocrity.

But, as you said, it looks fine on the cover. Sometimes it even looks kind of good in a trashy cheesecake kind of way, and all Marvel publishing apparently cares about is to get casual horny teenagers to buy the comic because of that cover (at this point, the habitual readers who don't like Land's art are probably going to keep buying the title out of habit anyway). So, you don't realize at first everything you're giving up when you give a job to Land. It seems like "even if it's a trace, it still mostly looks okay". But every time you see the same drawing reused, it chips away at the illusion that there's some merit in the comic you're holding. And if you read enough Greg Land books, you get disgusted with the whole genre and industry. (At least, I did.)

Comic book art is hard, and I have nothing but respect for people who do it, even if I don't personally like their particular style... Except hacks like Greg Land. Even setting aside that he has stolen other people's drawings without attribution. Even setting aside that he's got all the creative merit of a DeepFake algorithm. He's just a [frick]ing terrible storyteller who keeps getting work because his process is fast and his drawings look like porn (which they often are traced from). He treats his characters like disposable objects, and that vibe insinuates itself through every comic he's ever touched, (regardless of the writing, which is usually trying so hard to make those characters feel distinct and alive). Land sabotages his writers by making them feel like hacks, too.

[frick] Greg Land.

@Spock0Clock - can tell you're not a fan of Land. Like, at all.

As far as I know I never read a Greg Land comic, and now you convinced me both to actually pick one up and don't wanna get near one at all. It's like those gross videos on youtube. Absolutely don't wanna watch it, but something just compels me to watch them anyway (I do have a limit though, won't be watching cyst videos or any videos with broken bones or any real physical injuries).

I wonder which porn actress he traced for these covers. It would probably be more interesting watching them then looking at his art

Cool covers. Really like the Wolverine-Gwen but nothing beats the classic green jacket/purple skirt imo.
Does anyone know if the remaining three issues of the Gwen Stacy miniseries from 2020 will ever be releashed? Remember enjoying it so it would be a shame if it was cancelled.

Lol Greg Land produces 5 covers, and 3 are traced from the first two, which are likely traced from somewhere else.
