Variety caught up with Mathew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) at the Cannes film festival where he is on promotional duties for his latest feature 'Sea of Trees.' Talk turned to the current trend of superhero movies in Hollywood, a genre which McConaughey has yet to appear in. When asked if he would consider in starring in a comic book movie, McConaughey revealed that he has read scripts from both Marvel and DC projects: ' I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it'

A big name like McConaughey is sure to get approached about big budget movies all the time but what would tempt him to sign? McConaughey said that: 'It’s very simple for me. I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting? Is the money that comes with it exciting? Sure. Is it the possibility of going, “Hey you can get on a train and it can be a franchise and you could do 3, 4, 5, and have a great time as some kind of superhero or anti-hero.” But I would also look at something like that and say, “Hey, in success that means you are on the train for a while.” Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.'

Would you like to see McConaughey reunite with his fellow Oscar winning Dallas Buyers Club co-star Jared Leto in one of DC's upcoming films, or do you think that the True Detective actor is a better fit for Marvel Studios? Share your thought below.

If they go with an older version of Hal Jordan, he'd be great.

He has ties with Warner, so I'd say DC is more likely.

leave this guy out of GOTG2, please. He such a great drama actor. I don't wanna see him doing something lighter. He could play some DC Villain.

@Omarvls

He's one of my picks along with Ewan McGregor, Brad Pitt and Garrett Hedlund.

The only Marvel character I can see for Matt is Norman Osbourne. Anything else is a waste of his talent. Most big Marvel characters are cast or wouldn't fit Matt.

With DC, he would be perfect for Hal Jordan or Green Arrow or maybe Two-Face.

There are more opinions at DC.

Having Matt involved in a film would be like how Affleck is involved with the DCCU. Affleck and Matt wouldn't agree to a film if the script wasn't good. That's why Ben has Chris Terrio rewrite Batman V Superman & why he will write the 2 JL films.

Matt doesn't have writers but he wouldn't accept a role unless it was perfect and wouldn't ruin his career.

Green Lantern yo. He basically was Hal Jordan in Interstellar.

DC should get him because they need another big name. Affleck wont be enough.

Film chatacters I could see him being:
Hawkman (with more muscle)
An older version of Luthor or Gambit
The Question
Green Arrow
The Scarecrow

@Omarvls Great choice but he's too busy with the six part Knight of the Roundtable saga.

In terms of Marvel, it can't only be based on just scripts. Being in a Marvel film increases an actor's success expectancy by far i.e. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt.

And this has been tested with nearly all of Marvel's properties. Taking an opportunity with DC/WB doesn't have as much of a guarantee as Marvel since all they've been doing in the past has been either Batman or Superman. Not to mention, the time when they did try to do something different with Green Lantern nearly destroyed Ryan Reynolds's career.
