Batman: The Brave And The Bold Reportedly "On Hold" Until The WBD/Paramount Merger Is Settled

We knew Batman: The Brave and the Bold was not a current priority for DC Studios, but it seems we may be waiting even longer to see the DCU's new take on the Dark Knight than initial reports suggested...

One of the most exciting projects to be announced during James Gunn and Peter Safran's "Gods and Monsters" DCU slate reveal was Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Taking inspiration from Grant Morrison's acclaimed run, the movie was expected to serve as the DCU debut of a new take on the Dark Knight, as well as Damien Wayne, who would take up the mantle of Robin.

"This is a story of Damian Wayne, who’s Batman’s actual son that he didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life," Gunn said at the time. "He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He’s my favorite Robin. We’re putting it all together right now."

Not long after, we got word that The Flash director Andy Muschietti had been enlisted to helm the project.

“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement. “It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

This was before The Flash hit theaters, and the movie's underperformance (to put it mildly) at the box office led to speculation that Muschietti may have been taken off The Brave and The Bold. Since then, Gunn has admitted that he is struggling to "crack" this project, but as far as we know, Muschietti remains attached.

It seems clear that The Brave and the Bold is not a current priority for the studio, but fans may be waiting even longer than expected to see a new take on the Caped Crusader on the big screen.

Writer/filmmaker Dan Marcus claims that Muschietti told him that "all work" on the movie is on hold until the Warner Bros Discovery/Paramount merger is settled - which may not happen for quite some time.

He added, "I suspect what’s likely is that Muschietti himself doesn’t know if he’s moving ahead with THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD until after the merger is finalized, but he also mentioned if it doesn’t pan out (him directing the film) he’ll just move onto another film, so he didn’t seem worried."

Last we heard, Paramount Skydance had agreed not to move forward with its multimillion-dollar megamerger until legal challenges to the deal are resolved or June 1, 2027, whichever comes first. If the court decides that the proposed $111 billion takeover violates antitrust laws, it could put the entire deal in jeopardy.

With no way of knowing how long this debacle could drag out, it's obviously impossible to predict when we'll finally see some movement on The Brave and The Bold, but a lot of people are convinced that the project will never see the light of day.

Gunn has assured fans that a new Batman will debut at some point, but many feel that the wiser move would be to integrate Robert Pattinson's version of the hero into the DCU.

@0bstreperous - Exactly. Gunn is talented—there’s no doubt about that—but he isn’t versatile. His sensibilities and style as a director are a perfect fit for projects like Guardians or Suicide Squad, but that’s where it ends. And when he starts letting his ego take over—as has been happening since he took over the DCU—it only makes things worse. Dude has been smelling his own farts a lot in the last couple of years.

@Moriakum - It's like if your friend told you he had a horse that could do a backflip. That's be pretty awesome to see for the first time. But then he keeps inviting you over every day to watch the pony do the same trick again and again.

Years ago I saw a horse do this in the exercise paddock at Tampa Bay Downs...
That horse went on to win the day's race...! ☮️👍

@0bstreperous - Gunn should stay. I’m absolutelyyy LOVING all his trolling. The handful of pretend Gunn fans get to stew in the fact they’ll NEVER get a campy comic relief Batman. They’ll get Jimmy Olsen instead 🤣🤣🤣

Waller, The Authority and Booster Gold have been canceled, Swamp Think and Paradise Lost are unlikely.

@JusticeL - nope. Ellison wants BatB. BatB means backing Gunn. Which is what he's doing.

If Gunn somehow screws up BatB, *then* he's done...

I know there were vague musings about Nightwing, Flash, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Adam Strange, but I don't know if they were ever more than James Gunn thinking out loud in a meeting.
