UPDATE: Rumor: The Flash Director Andy Muschietti Is "Not Doing" Batman: The Brave And The Bold

We've heard mixed reports about this over the past few months, but according to the latest rumor, Andy Muschietti will not be directing Batman: The Brave and the Bold...

UPDATE: During this week's episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider said he's heard that The Brave and the Bold is actually "further along" than people think, and DC Studios is aiming to get the movie into production next year.

Sneider adds that he doesn't know if Muschietti will helm or if "Gunn will direct it himself," but theorises that the recent Welcome to Derry Season 2 news might be the impetus for The Flash director officially announcing that he's parted ways with the project.

Original story follows.

James Gunn recently debunked a rumor that Batman: The Brave and the Bold had been put on hold until the WBD/Paramount merger is settled, but even when (if?) the movie does enter production, will Andy Muschietti be at the helm?

When the news broke that Muschietti had been chosen to helm the project, Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said they enlisted the filmmaker on the strength of his work on The Flash.

“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement. “It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

This was before The Flash hit theaters, and the movie's underperformance at the box office (it actually received a mostly positive critical reception) led to speculation that Muschietti may have been taken off the project.

Last we heard, Muschietti was still attached, but The Hot Mic's John Rocha believes there is no way he will wind up directing the movie.

“The [Andy] Muschietti thing I think is absolutely ridiculous. As I said almost two years ago, he is not on this [project], from my sources who are still connected to WB and DC, he is not doing The Brave and the Bold."

. World of Reel's Jordan Ruimy recently heard that Gunn might be considering taking the helm himself.

"Christina Hodson wrote the latest draft of The Brave and the Bold, and I keep hearing that Gunn is actually considering replacing Muschietti… with himself. Yes, Gunn is apparently tempted to direct the DCU’s Batman movie after helming the first two Superman films. Might as well take this ship down while you’re fully at the wheel."

Ruimy has shared a few significant scoops in the past, along with some reports that turned out to be nonsense. He is also notoriously anti-Gunn, so it's up to you how much stock you want to put in this.

There's also been some resurfaced chatter that Gunn might be planning to introduce an older take on Bruce Wayne (possibly even in his 50s).

Gunn addressed the older Batman rumor during a 2025 interview, when he was asked if DCU's Dark Knight would be in his mid-to-late 30s, given the fact that Damian is typically portrayed as a 10-year-old.

"No, I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn't take any of it–Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to... Listen, first of all, I can't tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you'd have a harder time finding actors who don't want to be Batman. He's the one character everyone wants to play. That's the truth."

When asked whether Damian was even still part of the movie, Gunn replied: "I think you have to wait to see exactly what's happening."

Would you like to see Gunn direct The Brave and the Bold? Let us know in the comments.

Not sure what that person's track record is, but that sounds about as safe of a bet / guess / rumor / scoop as possible.

@TemporarilyHere - No one is doing Batman(other than Reeves) till Paramount says so....it's not Gunn's call or anyone at WB anymore.

@jst5 -

I think what you're describing is a very possible alternative, but not the most probable course of action. If things truly get out of hand for Gunn and Safran, which is where they're headed but have yet to, I agree that then they'll probably be forced to adapt Pattinson into their DCU somehow.

@TemporarilyHere - Oh I'm not saying Paramount will go with the Reeves Batman though if part 2 kills at the box they are going to be very tempted I'm sure.I'm just saying it's not Gunn or WB call on who will be Batman moving forward....it's all in the hands of Paramount now.Gunn can't cast Batman anymore on his own he has to get Paramount to approve casting and any shows and movies post 2027 which is why nothing is planned post 2027 at this point.

@TemporarilyHere - Gunn said this week that Andy is still the director of Batman and that all rumors he isn't is fake. Pretty sure the head of DC knows whats going on more than "sources close to the project". He says there hasn't been any updates because there's no complete script.

@mastakilla39 - Do you know how much fake and false info that dude has said and put out??Gunn doesn't control what happens to DC anymore...his control goes away next year which is why nothing is planned post 2027.

@jst5 -

It's a toss-up at this point.

On one hand, Reeves take has only had positive word of mouth with the first one and the Penguin series, and Pattinson is at an all time high with his recent outings, so of course WB/PM will want to bank on him as much as possible.

But on the other hand, they (ie every studio) seem incapable of letting go of the whole shared cinematic universe approach, so as much as that character may work on his isolated corner, they'll naturally want to integrate him into the larger picture.

I'm leaning towards the latter, tbh.

I believe you. And I believe him. Thing is, things are not exactly going as planned. So as much as I want to believe on a steady course for that franchise (and trust me, I do) I also fear things might actually be a lot more shaky than we realize.

@jst5 - Dude has never lied as I can recall. If anything Paramount deal is going to fall through because several states are suing them and they can't afford the delay. Gunn is guaranteed a 2 year extension because he has to oversee Superman 2 and Batman 2's marketing and release.

Only way he gets booted is if Batman 2 and Superman 2 flop, but I highly doubt it. If Gunn does decide to direct Batman or Wonder Woman he will let us know via threads compared to baseless rumors.

jst5 - 8/27/2026, 8:13 PM
@mastakilla39 - Then you haven't been keeping up.

The Paramount deal isn't going to fall through...it's going to get approved fully.Paramount has THE rights to approve and not approved things moving forward with WB.I think you need to read up on how all this works and what Paramount controls with WB.They took over full approve power as soon as the WB board approved the merger that happened this summer.Gunn doesn't control the future of WB/DC...Paramount does.

mastakilla39 - 8/27/2026, 9:02 PM
@jst5 - I'm a cinephile and actively read movie news from deadline every day. I think your doing selective reading or only listening to biased news outlets that are misinterpreting the current situation. You should only read from Deadline and Variety, nothing else.

WB has no power or control of WB yet, Elison hasn't even met with any studio heads like Gunn or Peter Safran either. Its business as usual at WB until the board gets paid their 110 billion dollars. The lawsuits aren't expected to be resolved at earliest August 2027 and Paramount is panicking at that date because WB has the ability to walk from the deal by June 2027 in which Zaslav wants to do. Thats why Gunn is guaranteed an extension if not a renewal because there's no one else that can lead DC Studios. When he gets his renewal he can greenlight anything he deems worthy for the next 2 years.

WB will keep operating as if the Paramount deal isn't going to happen, thats why at Cinemacon 2026 they announced a slate of 20 to 30 theatrical films through 2028.

@Irregular - he's saying Paramount isn't calling the shots because the merger hasn't happened. It's a typo. Dumb [frick]s like you are acting like Ellison is already calling the shots and secretly making the DCU fail so there's only Superman and Batman movies left.

@mastakilla39 - Bud it's 100% how it works as soon as the merger was agreed to by the WB board EVERYTHING post 2027 has to be approved by Paramount that's not a guess it's 100% fact.Deadline and Variety??Oh you are one of these types lol...how old are you??

@jst5 - Paramount doesn’t own WB yet and God willing they never will. That’s probably too much optimism but, it’s my hope.
jst5
jst5 - 8/28/2026, 12:15 AM
@RolandD - The WB board and shareholders have approved the Paramount take over...that gives Paramount contractual rights that it didn't have when it was merely biddin gover decesions in a number of areas.Do some of you folks not read details of how these deals work??

The DOJ has already cleared the transaction and Paramount has now received every regulatory clearance required under its merger agreement covering nearly 70 jurisdictions.So let's say the states win the case which you have a better chance of winning a billion $$ lottery than those states having a federal judge side with them but if that happens Paramount will appeal it will go to a higher court and win there pretty ease giving the DOJ has cleared it.So if you're holding out some type of hope this deal isn't happening you're going to be very very very sad.

@RolandD -

They will. I agree with you that they souldn't, but they will.

Unless, God willing, things go as they should and not as planned in November, in which case we'll be having an entirely different kind of shitstorm in our hands to deal with.

But, the way things are as of now, it's sadly gonna get approved.

You clearly have no knowledge of how corporate mergers work.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 8/28/2026, 5:02 AM
@mastakilla39 - The courts are the only reason that WBD is on hold, production-wise. That year-long delay means that Paramount can't make any decisions for a year and neither can WBD. It's a stalemate and a lot of people are gonna be out of work. It's like strike action for everyone for a year.

However Paramount are threatening to leave California, so they may be able to deftly sidestep all of these legal woes regardless.

This rumor sounds about as credible as me reporting that I had a threesome with Sydney Sweeney and Ana De Armas. I hope Muschetti isn’t on him. I lost all trust in him to tackle a DC film after The Flash. You shouldn’t helm a film that disastrous of a failure and be rewarded a with a movie starring DC’s literal biggest character.
