James Gunn Responds To Rumor That Batman: The Brave And The Bold Is On Hold Until Merger Is Settled

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has responded to yesterday's rumor that Batman: The Brave and the Bold is on hold until the Warner Bros./Paramount megamerger is settled...

It seems clear that The Brave and the Bold is not a current priority for DC Studios, but James Gunn is adamant that the movie has not been shelved or placed "on hold."

Yesterday, Writer/filmmaker Dan Marcus claimed that Muschietti told him that "all work" on the movie is on hold until the Warner Bros Discovery/Paramount merger is settled - which may not happen for quite some time.

He added, "I suspect what’s likely is that Muschietti himself doesn’t know if he’s moving ahead with THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD until after the merger is finalized, but he also mentioned if it doesn’t pan out (him directing the film) he’ll just move onto another film, so he didn’t seem worried."

Gunn was asked about the rumor on Threads, and the DC Studios co-CEO responded by claiming that "nothing" is on hold due to Paramount's controversial acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Marcus has responded with the following.

Gunn also shared some seemingly random comic book covers, likely as a way to illustrate that a connected universe can still work when the various projects have different tones.

The Brave and the Bold was viewed as one of the most exciting projects to be announced during James Gunn and Peter Safran's "Gods and Monsters" DCU slate reveal. Taking inspiration from Grant Morrison's acclaimed run, the movie was expected to serve as the DCU debut of a new take on the Dark Knight, as well as Damien Wayne, who would take up the mantle of Robin.

"This is a story of Damian Wayne, who’s Batman’s actual son that he didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life," Gunn said at the time. "He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He’s my favorite Robin. We’re putting it all together right now."

Not long after, we got word that The Flash director Andy Muschietti had been enlisted to helm the project.

“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement. “It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

This was before The Flash hit theaters, and the movie's dismal box office performance has led to speculation that Muschietti may have been taken off The Brave and The Bold. Since then, Gunn has admitted that he is struggling to "crack" this project, but as far as we know, Muschietti remains attached.

@InfinitePunches - That's it. He's chillin and relaxing. I'm sure he doesn't need the money. People here seem to have high blood pressure about Gunn being in charge of the DCU. Meanwhile Snyder is just chillin like a villiaN.

This project was announced 4 years ago; we would've gotten it by now if it wasn't on hold, or at the very least something substantial about it would've been announced by now. The amount of lying Gunn does is on a whole other level.

"I apologize for any confusion my previous post may have caused. For the record, I don't see myself as a "scooper". One evening, my friend and I literally just ran into Muschietti outside a movie theater and inquired about the status of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. That’s it."

DCU is a mess just like their comics. None of their stories ever line up and they can never ever finish a story line.
I was so excited for the Batman who laughs. It ended up being so bad.
How many times has their main line rebooted now??? The new 52? what a [frick]in mess.
Its sad. They have some of the best characters but can never seem to get the good stories.

Just sell them to Disney and be done with it.

Given James Gunns long history of telling the truth...no one...I mean no one...should doubt his sacred word. Like that time he stated that Ben Affleck was interested in working with DC. When Ben Affleck stated he had no interest in working for Gunns DC....clearly Affleck was lying.

@Forthas - Or when he told Gadot that WW3 was happening. Or when he said that Waller, Authority, Batman, and Booster Gold were all coming out before Supergirl. Or when he said that people would be talking about the Peacemaker finale for years. Or when he said that the Flash was the best superhero movie ever made.

@SeeYouIn2036 - How DARE you suggest James Gunn has been anything but truthful. All that stuff you pointed out was probably someone who hijacked his account numerous times and is posting lies. If it was from an interview....obviously someone is impersonating James Gunn and is spreading falsehoods. James Gunn cannot lie....because he made Guardians of the Galaxy.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/25/2026, 5:52 PM
@MaxPaint - I don't know what you are implying, but just because a movie has mixed to negative ratings, turned off fans to a franchise, bombed at the box office and was plagued by bad special effects and writing...in no way does that mean it is not the greatest comic book film ever made. So stop trolling and enjoy James and his friends and family making the greatest cinematic universe ever conceived and embarrassing Marvel as only DC can do.

@KalSonOfEl - says the guy with Snyderman as his pfp LOL.

Cavill's hairline was a failure FF. Just like Man Of Snyder, which is why Cavill was a guest star in BVS and never got a solo trilogy.

Peacemaker & CC were both successful.

Superman is the best live action Superman of the last 30 years. Hoult is the best live action Lex of all time while Jesse Zuckerberg was the worst.

And even Supergirl was better than every snyderverse entry. Milly Alcock's casting alone was light-years better than Sasha Calle.

Peacemaker lost 70% of viewership by the 3 episode before getting CANCELED
Creature Commandos couldn't get 200 FREE views on YouTube before getting Yanked (It didn't rank cutoff low viewership)
Superman 2025 LOST $40 MILLION DOLLARS before getting yanked from theatersearly for UNDERPERFORMING said Ted Saranos under oath
Supergirl lost over $400 Million Dollars before going direct to VOD by week 3 DC biggest FLOP EVER!
PS James Gunn contract is UP in February 2027 & haven't been renewed in Hollywood terms that means YOURE FIRED!!!😂😂😂😂
Sasha Calle was cast by Walter Hamada.😂😂😂
If Henry Cavill a "guest star" in BvS what do you have to say about David Corenswet Superman 2025 where he wasn't the hero, he didn't save metropolis,(Mr Terrific did) didn't defeat Lex(Lois did)Didn't stop the war(justice Gang did) all he did as cry about being human & got kicked in the NUTZ!😂😂😂Cant make this shit up!😂😂 L1,R2,X,X,O,O😂😂😂😂Thats how he kicked Gunns Supermans ass...with PS5 joystick!!!!
Did I mention Superman 2025 sold less than HALF as many tickets as MOS. That Gunns Superman was rejected INTERNATIONALLY! Oh by the way...go to iMAX instagram page you'll see theyre posting Zacks JLA to be RE-REleasd in iMAX THEATERES!!!
