DC Studios Boss James Gunn Confirms DCU Plans For Static And Other Milestone Characters

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has seemingly confirmed that the new DC Universe will include Static and more Milestone characters, though there's currently no word on when or where they'll actually appear.

DC Studios is in the midst of putting together its new DCU slate, though we only know a sampling of what's heading our way as part of "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters."

Understandably, Superman and Batman look set to be at the forefront of this reboot, though characters like Swamp-Thing, Green Lantern, and Supergirl will also take centre stage. Now, James Gunn has revealed whether fans can expect to see any Milestone Universe characters join the fray in the near future.

As you can see below, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director has confirmed he has something planned for Static, news that we're sure many of you are going to welcome.

The most well-known hero to hail from Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, Derek T. Dingle, and Christopher Priest's Milestone Universe, there have long been talks of bringing Virgil Hawkins to the screen. In 2021, we learned that Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan was developing a movie, though it was likely part of the previous Warner Bros. regime that wanted to bring DCEU movies to HBO Max.

Along with starring in four seasons of his own animated TV show, Static Shock, the hero has appeared in episodes of Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice.

While Gunn is touring the world to promote his Guardians of the Galaxy threequel, it's unclear how much he'll be talking to the press. If he does take part in junkets, though, we can likely expect him to drop a few more hints about both the DCU and his plans for Superman: Legacy

So far, the DC Studios co-CEO appears open to making use of pretty much any and every character, so we're sure Static isn't the only possibility on the table right now.

Check out Gunn's Tweet below.

I'm honestly shocked (pun intended) that we're getting Blue Beetle on screen before Static Shock or Batman Beyond. It's almost as if.... wB has no idea what it's doing with its DC properties.

ANY kid that grew up in the 80s and 90s could tell WB at least 10 films to make with IPs they own that would make them billions, and we're getting shit like Creature Commandos.

I've suffered WB for decades. Literally the only faithful adaptation WB have EVER made was Superman The Movie. Even Keaton Batman was nothing like the comics. WB just make stupid comic book movies, despite having great characters. They always have.

Even if they made a Static movie before, it would have been like Steel or some stupid version of Static Shock.

WB finally made the right call by making a separate DC division they won't oversee, but then they botched it by giving control to Gunn.

Joe Cornish to direct Static Shock. He may be a director to Gunn's liking.

Wait, a black character who...has always been black since his original creation? How's that possible? I thought there were no black characters out there.

Isn't that why people keep insisting race swapping is completely necessary?

But in seriousness, this is all we wanted. If, for example, the little mermaid was named something else and had it's own story and their own mermaid character, no one would care if she were black.

But no, we gotta race swap everyone to black to the point cleopatra is black in a f@#$ing documentary series.

@Origame - Kind of hilarious that a group of Egyptologists are suing Netflix for trying to erase their identity though isn’t it?

It is so crazy that there are so many good black characters out there and yet the studios just want to hand out sloppy seconds for their minority roles.

@mountainman - exactly. So many people have been waiting for characters like blade and static. Why do we need ironheart and black superman?
