DC Studios Boss Peter Safran Reportedly In The Mix To Replace Dan Lin As Netflix Film Chief

In a surprising development, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has been named as a potential candidate to take over from fired Netflix Head of Film, Dan Lin...

Earlier this week, the news broke that Dan Lin will no longer serve as Netflix's head of film amid layoffs that will reportedly affect roughly 1,000 people. Lin follows chief content officer Bela Bajaria, VP of film Doug Belgrad, and a series of high-ranking television executives out the door.

"Part of Dan’s appeal when he was hired was his dispassionate approach to budgets and cutting output, which is what [co-CEO Ted Sarandos] wanted at the time and liked about him. But that same dispassionate personality ultimately cost him his job,” said one exec.

Lin is also said to have clashed with Greta Gerwig over her Narnia movie (more here), and Ben Affleck regarding his latest directorial effort, Animals.

As new CCO Peter Rice takes charge of implementing new leadership, several names have emerged as potential replacements for Lin, one of which is sure to stir up a lot of conversation.

According to Page Six, former Warner Bros. Discovery co-chairs Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca, A24's Noah Sacco, Stacey Snider, Jeff Robinov, Emma Watts, and current DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran are all in the mix.

"Safran’s contract is up in the early summer," confirms Tatiana Siegel. "As a producer, Safran is behind the hugely profitable “Conjuring” franchise in addition to running the DC portfolio for both film and TV."

Earlier this month, we got confirmation that Safran and James Gunn will remain on as DC Studios co-CEOs under the newly formed Skydance banner. The news followed the announcement that Paramount has been given the go-ahead to finalize its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with the deal expected to close on October 6.

A recent Bloomberg report revealed some more details on David Ellison's decision to allow Gunn and Safran to "keep doing what they're doing."

According to the outlet, the Skydance boss visited the set of Man of Tomorrow when it was filming earlier this year, and listened as the pair outlined their 10-year plan for the DCU. Evidently impressed, Ellison supported their strategy.

So, it'll be business as usual for the time being, but if Man of Tomorrow tanks at the box office (unlikely, but always a possibility), Ellison might well rethink his decision.

Is it possible that Safran sees the writing on the wall and is "heading for the door"? This is the stance a lot of anti-DCU social media accounts and even a few outlets have taken, but if the exec is seriously considering jumping ship to Netflix, there could be some truth to it.

Then again, Safran weighing up the chance to run Netflix's film department wouldn't necessarily mean that he's lost faith in DC Studios.

He was there before Gunn. If there's a weak link in the chain it's definitely Safran.

Gunn isn't going anywhere snowflakes

@SeeYouIn2036 - 2031. And the "acid trip" was cold water and common sense, sorry to disappoint.

That said, I can't see Netflix poaching Safran.

@UltimaRex - Not sure that was wo'uh, bruv.

And common sense would suggest that a boss would let an employee go if they continue to lose the company's money.

It would be quite something if Safran ended up at Netflix even after the Netflix/WB deal fell through.

I would imagine though if Ellison really is in the corner of Gunn and Safran, we won't see Safran bailing.

@RedFury - yeah , that would be interesting

Hollywood is an unstable place where things can change quickly but right now , I don’t particularly see any indication as to why Safran would jump ship unless Netflix offers him more money etc.

Let’s not forget that Safran is the one that brought Gunn on and not vice versa.

Interesting…

I don’t see it being Safran but it would be really funny if Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca after being fired from WB recently go to Netflix.

Anyway we’ll see but I think Gunn & Safran will be in it together for the long haul or atleast i hope so!!.

@TheJok3r - He said under oath (and matter of factly) that Superman underperformed. Something that Gunn's devout followers simply don't want to admit to themselves.

Since then Supergirl has flopped, Clayface will make way less than that and MOT will most certainly flop too at this point. DCU was indeed DOA. Gunn had fun but it wasn't sustainable.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/22/2026, 4:20 PM
@UltronIO - The problem is that Gunn is making vanity projects that cater to the smallest minority of viewers while spending the highest budgets. Considering that Skydance is dying financially, they simply can't afford to work with someone who refuses to make projects that cater to the general audience. There's also the fact that what he's making look nothing like the budgets attached to them. Does anything in Superman look like a $225 million budget ?
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/22/2026, 4:46 PM
@TheJok3r - No it does not. It looks like it was made on an iPhone with a modest budget for a cgi kaiju.

I’ve said this before somewhere else, but regardless of the performance and success/failure of the DCU, I don’t see either Gunn or Safran staying indefinitely over the next decade like Kevin Feige.

It probably isn’t great publicity, however, that this news came out even though his contract does expire next summer.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/22/2026, 2:10 PM
@Kahron0 - Unless Man of Tomorrow manages to light the box office on fire, I think the DCU will come to an end sometime next year. Skydance is simple not in a financial position to fund movies that either outright flop (Supergirl), or barely break even (Superman).
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/22/2026, 2:43 PM
@Kahron0 - true but they could always renew the contract if need be.

I don’t think they will be there indefinitely but then why have a 10 year outline if you don’t plan on staying that long?.
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/22/2026, 4:31 PM
@TheJok3r - Not only is that an extremely bold prediction that requires equal evidence, but I’m also curious about what would actually change your mind. If Man of Tomorrow does end up being a box-office smash, would that genuinely restore your confidence in the DCU? Because you’ve already indicated that you don’t believe it will be a hit in the first place.

I’m not arguing that the DCU should be immune to criticism or that its success is guaranteed. My point is that there isn’t enough evidence to conclude that it’s inevitably going to fail/succeed, especially considering how young this cinematic universe still is. By the time Man of Tomorrow finishes its theatrical run, the DCU will have existed for less than three years since Creature Commandos launched it. What other cinematic universes are expected to establish themselves as runaway successes within their first two or three years?

My hot take is that people who consider Man of Tomorrow the make-or-break point for the entire DCU often haven’t established a consistent, measurable standard for what constitutes success or what would restore their confidence in its long-term viability. For me, the real measure is the performance of DC’s Trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. That means looking at not only Man of Tomorrow, but also The Brave and the Bold and the Wonder Woman reboot. Their collective performance would provide a much more meaningful indication of whether DC can consistently draw audiences to its biggest characters.

Even if Man of Tomorrow becomes a massive box-office success, what’s to say you wouldn’t simply argue that it doesn’t count because it’s another James Gunn film, and that DC needs multiple hits from other filmmakers? Or that Batman needs to outperform The Batman Part II, or Wonder Woman needs to outperform both Gal Gadot films? Without a consistent benchmark, the criteria for success can always change to accommodate the conclusion that the DCU is doomed.

I’m still open to the possibility that Gunn and Safran’s contracts could be extended, that one or both could eventually leave, or that the DCU could struggle financially and fail to continue in its current form. I’m not saying failure is impossible; I’m saying there’s considerably more nuance to the situation than declaring the franchise’s demise inevitable based on the limited evidence we have so far.

I wouldnt say Safran is heading for the door. At this point, its quite the step up from co-leading a property under a film development company vs leading a film development company.
Any rate 50% chance it will hurt and 50% it will help DC studios.
