Paramount/Warner Bros. Deal Will Officially Close On Oct. 6 - What Could This Mean For The DCU?

A U.S. District judge has officially given the go-ahead for the Paramount/Warner Bros. Discovery megamerger, and the deal is expected to close on October 6...

Though a lot of people are not too pleased about the outcome, a federal judge has now signed off on a settlement allowing Paramount to close its $111 billion megadeal for Warner Bros. Discovery.

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin entered a consent decree agreed to by Paramount, ending a months-long deadlock between the studio and states challenging the acquisition. The deal is expected to officially close on October 6.

We had assumed that the deal was done, but back in July, we got word that Paramount Skydance had agreed not to move forward with the megamerger until legal challenges are resolved or June 1, 2027, whichever comes first.

If the court had decided that the proposed takeover violated antitrust laws, it could have put the deal in jeopardy.

“Further, the proposed consent decree imposes these requirements on film distribution and basic cable negotiations in the midst of a rapidly-changing marketplace,” Martinez-Olguin wrote. “The Court therefore finds that the proposed consent decree reflects a settlement between the parties that is a fair, reasonable, and good faith approach to address the competitive harms alleged in the Complaint, and does not violate the law or public policy.”

David Ellison will remain chairman and CEO of the newly combined Paramount-Warner Bros., while Ynon Kreiz has been appointed as co-CEO and will join the board of directors.

So, what could this merger mean for DC Studios? Though some changes could be implemented down the line, it sounds like it's going to be business as usual for the DCU.

According to a recent report from The Wrap, the studio "plans to keep Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca at WB in a merged system, alongside New Line's Richard Brener and DC Studios' James Gunn and Peter Safran."

In his latest newsletter, Jeff Sneider quotes a source that told him, "Whatever happens with DC Studios after the merger, David Corenswet will be wearing that red cape for the next decade, easy.” Sneider also says he's "heard good early buzz" about Man of Tomorrow.

Ellison was a producer on Corenswet's upcoming Mr. Irrelevant and is believed to have established a good rapport with the Superman star.

While DC Studios may not be impacted, many actors, directors, and others in the film industry believe this merger is bad news for a variety of other reasons.

MCU star Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), who has been a fierce opponent of the deal from the beginning, released the following statement when the above ruling came down.

“This merger will stifle creativity, weaken free speech, and cost people their jobs — it is a bad deal for this country and should never have been approved,” Ruffalo posted to Threads. “This is an incredibly disappointing outcome for the hundreds of thousands of us who stood up to block it, but it’s also not the end. This grassroots movement isn’t going to fade away and neither is our resolve.”

He continued: “This was never about just one merger: this was about fighting back against corrupt oligarch billionaires trampling the interests of everyday people to line their own pockets. We’re still in that fight. Join us.”

@HashTagSwagg - Yep...anyone that thinks Gunn is running DC once 2027 is over is one naive human being.

I have no idea why anyone would source Sneider....he said Paramount will not get WB ...WRONG....he said Gunn's deal was extended past 2027...WRONG.

Hard to say, maybe just make movies for popular characters and have lesser know ones in the movies,if they recieve good feedback from them maybe give them a movie or show.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - They will most likely reboot the DCU.

When they finally reboot the DCU and MCU what'll be your sign off, "Softboot the SWU (Star Wars Universe)"? That's a worthwhile mantra imo.

Gunn prolly gone.

@ObserverIO - Damn, you're an optimistic one. I'll just believe it when I see it. I personally doubt we will see DC making Marvel money any time soon. Only property they have that has a chance of pulling off a billion atm is The Batman franchise.

Great News for Theaters and Movie goers like me. The Paramount/Warner Bros. Deal will make more DC movies in theater.

Plus, Paramount isn't broke has money to make DC movies.

I need Gunn’s massive failure to continue for a couple more years. His fanbase deserves every single shitty project he can imagine. We need an Animal Man series next.

@SenorTwats - Gunn/Safran contracts are SET TO EXPIRE in 6 months. NO extensions, NO renewed contracts...YOUR FIRED!😂😂😂 Supergirl cost $200 Million to make & made $126 Million worldwide..your fired!!!!!
SenorTwats
SenorTwats - 10/1/2026, 9:46 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - answer me this joe!

If Gunn is fired where do WB go? Back to snyder? The fanbase is already fragmented, going back to snyder would literally make the Gunn cult exactly what the snyderbots have become.

Who will Run DC movies?
Nobody but Gunn, Snyder and maybe kevin F wanted this job. And Kev would probably only take the role if Disney bought DC, he wouldn't leave marvel to do it.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/1/2026, 10:25 AM
@SenorTwats - They don't go back to anyone; they handle DC the way Reeves is handling Batman by having each character be its standalone franchise under a visionary director.
SenorTwats
SenorTwats - 10/1/2026, 10:37 AM
@TheJok3r - i doubt they'd go back to single character movies like that. I think they have realised the goldmine that is DC they just dont know how to execute it. Defaulting back to separate Batman and superman movies is leaving a lot of money on the table.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/1/2026, 11:21 AM
@SenorTwats - This whole shared universe concept has been nothing but a major failure for them, be it the DCEU or the DCU. Standalone franchises for each character (not just Batman and Superman) would likely not only be more successful, but will also attract higher quality directors and actors to work on them.
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/1/2026, 12:49 PM
@SenorTwats - Youre suffering from COPE-A-MANIA😂
Gunn\/Safran contracts are set to EXPIRE in 6 MONTHS! No EXTENSION & No New Contracts! While Matt Reeves has a signed A NEW CONTRACT with HBO. Supergirl cost $200 Million dollars to make & it ONLY made $126 Million WORLDWIDE! His Superman wasn't accepted across seas in China etc & only make &612 Million LOOSING $44 Million dollars before being yanked from theaters(L1,R2,X,O,SMFH!) Peacemaker lost 70% of viewership by episode 3 & was CANCELLED. Creature Commandos couldn't get 200 views on YouTube...thats FREE! Zack Snyder has been in talks with Abdy & Deluca & received a heros welcome at WB. He will be doing a 2 Part film of Dark Knight with Frank Miller & finish his JLA 2 & 3. The Ellisons don't like Gunn & his woke films. Paramount/WB already resigned ABDY & DELUCA...why no new contract or extension for Gunn/Safran?🧐🧐 Why no Season 2 for Lanterns sense Paramount NOW OWNS HBO?😂😂😂 It's cuz Gunn is DONE! The Snyder Bros was RIGHT! And theyARE the fan bae who said WALLETS CLOSED that DOOMED Gunns DCU. Theres not enough of Gunn Cultist to matter! All of you went to watch Gunns Superman & it still wasn't enough. You didn't support Gunns 2nd film Supergirl... NOT ENOUGH OF YALL! Gunn DC supporters are FEW & dwindling!!!!!!😂

@Imprtracr1 - Ruffalo is a complete loon and I’ve been incredibly disappointed with Gunn’s DCU.

Unfortunately, I don’t think much will change unless they fire Gunn and reboot yet again. Mike De Luca actually read my superhero script over a decade ago when he was a working screenwriter and said he really liked the way I crafted my action scenes and was nice enough to let me use his recommendation to open a few doors. That said, the best Gunn has done here is Superman maybe breaking even if that.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/1/2026, 9:19 AM
Paramount will have close to a $100 Billion in debt, so they can't afford to throw money at Gunn's vanity projects that have zero financial potential. Best case scenario is that he gets to make a third Superman movie IF Man of Tomorrow doesn't flop like Supergirl, but as far as his vision for DC as a whole, that'll be gone before the ink dries.
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/1/2026, 9:32 AM
Gunn/Safran contract is set to EXPIRE in 6 months...meaning YOU ARE FIRED!!! Good riddance to bad content.
Super12
Super12 - 10/1/2026, 11:31 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - They're not likely going to fire Gunn anytime soon, but they'll hopefully put some guardrails around him and enforce more control over the writers he hires and projects he approves. Changes will come, but I don't think it'll be drastic at first.
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/1/2026, 12:35 PM
@Super12 - They're not going to fire him BUT they are going to let his contract EXPIRE! Meaning you're fired just in Hollywood terms. If he wasn't he'd have a NEW contract or an extension but he doesn't have one!
