We recently told you that Maxwell Lord, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific will appear in HBO Max's The People vs. Gorilla Grodd, and a new rumour claims another, newer member of the Justice Gang will join them.
According to Murphy's Multiverse, Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho is set to appear in the next DC Studios TV series. We don't have additional details on his role, but it's looking increasingly likely that the superhero team will assemble to take Grodd down in place of his greatest foe in the comics, The Flash.
The DCU's Metamorpho, aka Rex Mason, was forced to work for Lex Luthor when he and his son were held captive in the villain's Pocket Universe. After meeting Superman and helping to stop the war between Boravia and Jarhanpur, he was invited to join the Justice Gang.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant for Primetime, Skyler Gisondo was asked where in the DCU's timeline The People vs Gorilla Grodd takes place. While he said he believes it's set "somewhere in between" Superman and Man of Tomorrow, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has now set the record straight.
"Well, no. I mean it's a true crime series so it jumps all over the place," he wrote on Threads. "But overall in continuity it's after [Man of Tomorrow] (and won't come out until then)."
Back to Gisondo, and he told Inverse this week that The People vs Gorilla Grodd "tonally begins in a similar place" to American Vandal and "the comedy feels like it's in a similar vein." However, there's more to the series than just laughs.
"Ultimately, because it's set in Metropolis, the stakes [go] to a place that is much more intense than you would realise when you first set out on the journey," Gisondo teased. "I was floored reading the scripts. And it's amazing what they were able to do with these scripts. It's quite a balancing act. I don't feel that it ever loses that kind of humour that defined American Vandal, but also, the intensity gets ratcheted up in a big way."
The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows a superintelligent ape who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials.
The Max Original comedy stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and Superman actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
The series also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. Their respective roles have not been revealed. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers.
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will likely premiere on HBO Max in 2027 or 2028.
