STATIC SHOCK Artist Assures Fans The Movie Is Still Happening Despite Warner Bros. Discovery Shakeup

It's been a long time since we've had any updates about the Static Shock movie first announced at DC FanDome in 2020, but a comic book artist involved with the creator insists it's still in development...

There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of the DC Extended Universe, and we have Warner Bros. Discovery to thank for that. Batgirl's recent cancellation sent shockwaves through Hollywood, with Wonder Twins, Constantine, and more among the projects now sidelined by the studio.

The studio is attempting to figure out where to take the DCEU next, but where does that leave a movie like Static Shock? The character is immensely popular among fans, and a big screen adaptation was first announced at DC FanDome in 2020.

We'd later learn that Michael B. Jordan is producing the project, with Ranky McKinnon (Chamber) hired the following year to pen the screenplay. Since then, Jordan has seemed uncertain about where things stand with Static Shock, admitting last April that there are "no real timelines" and "no real updates."

We wouldn't be shocked if Jordan walked away from the movie. Why? Well, the changes at Warner Bros. Discovery more than likely mean his Superman movie once destined for HBO Max about Calvin Ellis probably isn't happening.

However, Static: Shadows of Dakota co-writer and artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey has dismissed the speculation and insisted in a Twitter post that Static Shock is still on the way. We're not convinced, and while we know Static will take centre stage in an upcoming DC Animated Universe feature alongside other Milestone heroes, this live-action effort could be at risk.

Created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, Static first appeared in 1993's Static #1, and later starred in a popular but short-lived animated series. The belief is that Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to focus on bigger-name characters, but we're sure there's room for this beloved hero somewhere in the DCEU.

I feel like this one would have been better served as a series. Black Lightening did pretty good with what it had on the CW and was a bit different from their usual stuff, I was hoping he would have shown up there.

A Static Shock movie should have been made like 20 years ago, or at least 10 years ago. After that animated show he was pretty big and well known with the general audiences. And all we've gotten since is a very very very cool cameo in Batman Beyond and maybe JL Unlimited but I can't recall right now if he was there or not.

Just make a Future Shock movie with Batman Beyond and Keaton playing older Bruce! Static, Terry and Bruce together is like a 5 billion dollar idea Hollywood, lets' go!!!!!

Still has a chance of being canned, just like Batgirl.

I think a rebooted animated series with the current comic art style would be preferred for me, because deep down in my gut I feel like they could easily mess it up in live action

But an animated series or film with a style rivaling Spiderverse or Arcane??? Yeah I think that would be amazing

@NightBoyWonder - I’d be down for that! An arcane style static show

Knowing David Zaslav, this project won’t happen. It doesn’t cater to middle America.
