THE ADDAMS FAMILY Director Barry Sonnenfeld Confirms DC's METAL MEN Is In Active Development (Exclusive)

News of Barry Sonnenfeld's Metal Men movie first broke in 2012, and talking to us about the re-release of The Addams Family in 4K, the filmmaker confirmed the DC project is again in active development.

Filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld found great success with offbeat franchises like Men in Black and The Addams Family, and the latter arrives on Digital 4K Ultra HD for the first time on October 19 with both the theatrical version and a new extended cut (it drops on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Remastered Blu-ray on November 9).

While we had the prolific director on the phone, we had to ask whether the superhero genre is one that interests him. As you might recall, he first became attached to DC's Metal Men in 2012, but we've heard very little since then. Well, according to Sonnenfeld himself, it's now back in active development.

"You know, it’s funny because I am developing Metal Men with Warner Bros. We’re actively working on a treatment for that," the director confirmed. "For me, it’s not so much a superhero thing as it is world-building. If you look at the work I’ve done, whether it’s The Addams Family, Men in Black, Pushing Daisies, Schmigadoon!, or A Series of Unfortunate Events, it’s all about creating a world. An unusual, slightly off-kilter quirky, different kind of world; that’s what I love doing."

"It’s not specifically, necessarily superhero, but even in Metal Men, that I am developing, it’s going to be a very specific kind of world," Sonnenfeld continued. "It’s a real-world because I always like things to be reality-based, but slightly with a tilt to that. It all started with The Addams Family which is both real but slightly pushed."

For those of you unfamiliar with the Metal Men, they were created by a scientist called Dr. William Magnus. Each of the six robots was created from a single chemical element with qualities that are reflected in their personalities, abilities, and names. They've been reinvented on multiple occasions in recent years, so there's lots that Sonnenfeld can pull from the comics for inspiration.

Warner Bros. has expanded its DC slate in a big way these past few years, with a Superman project heading to HBO Max as wee as Batgirl starring Leslie Grace. With that in mind, an obscure property like Metal Men could quite easily find a home on the streaming service rather than in theaters.

Check back here next week for our full interview with Barry about The Addams Family's re-release!

@PantherKing - James Gunn has expressed that he would love to do a Metal Men film if he were given the opportunity, way before he rebooted Suicide Squad. Right after screenrant announced that he's developing a new DC project after the Peacemaker tv show this news comes up...coincidence?

But yeah, Gunn has no interest in popular DC characters.

Really never thought of Metal Men. Although, now thinking about it, it would be good for James Gunn.

Although barry sonnenfeld is another great director choice.

Right now rewatching both the classic addams family and the munsters

@Waddles - Taika would be a good fit, although seems like he will stick to marvel for a while

@dracula - for Gunn I'd rather have something that gives him a lot of creativity with the character designs as well as personalities and backgrounds. It's why suicide squad and guardians of the galaxy work so well. If the show gets canceled maybe give him a run at a doom patrol movie? Or justice league dark?

@Waddles - cant be worst than brian fuller's munsters

My only exposure to the metal men were a crappy episode of Batman The Brave and The Bold and the forever evil tie in arc of justice league, when they teamed up with Cyborg. Was a nice arc.

@dracula - I like Batman brave and the bold. One of my favorite DC contents. Did what Teen Titans Go tries to do but fails at

@JFerguson - agree, although for sure a far from perfect show. Best episode is Chill Of The Night. That was good enough to fit into batman the animated series with little to no changes.

also had a seriously meta ending.

You watch the scooby doo crossover from a few years ago?

@dracula - no I haven’t, didn’t even know that existed. Was it a batmite situation or do they just not mention the universe crossing? Any good?

dracula - 10/12/2021, 11:30 PM
@JFerguson - no batmite and in the case of the movie, the scoobie gang just exist in the universe of batman the brave and the bold
heres the first 10 minutes

you can find it on hbomax

Meh. The team has some funny moments in the comics so it could be a decent action comedy.

Although I usually disregard anything from DC that is in "active development", i think this one is going to happen. Hopefully before the decade ends.

I know his more recent work has been a bit iffy, but I enjoy his work. His and Sam Raimi's early stuff is classic cinema in my household. I'm excited for this.

This is one of those DC projects that is "in development", but one that I doubt will ever move beyond that phase. And also, didn't Gunn also express interest in this? Only then can I see it actually being developed
