"Wonder Twins powers activate!"

Deadline confirms that HBO Max's live-action DC Comics comedy movie The Wonder Twins has found its two leads. KJ Apa (Riverdale) and Isabel May (1883) will play Zan and Jayna, the heroic twins (hence the title) who first debuted in animation before making the leap to comic books.

While very little is known about the movie beyond its comedic tone, Zan is a watery shapeshifter, while Jayna can transform into an animal. Hailing from the planet Exxor, they were orphaned during a plague and gained a pet in Gleek the Space Monkey. Travelling to Earth to warn the Justice League about the villainous Grax, they blended into life on Earth by posing as Swedish exchange students.

The two Gotham City High School students have made a number of appearances over the years, including in Teen Titans Go!, Smallville, and The Flash

Black Adam and Rampage co-writer Adam Sztykiel is making his directorial debut on The Wonder Twins from a script he wrote, while shooting is set to take place in Atlanta over the summer. With Blue Beetle now set for a theatrical release, this will be the second HBO Max DC Comics movie after Batgirl.

Apa's credits include Riverdale, Songbird, and The Hate U Give, while Dutton is best known for 1883 and Young Sheldon. They certainly look a little like twins, and we're definitely intrigued.

The Wonder Twins doesn't currently have a release date.

I'm not really convinced by the director/writer yet, but I do still look forward to it. Think it has a lot potential regardless

@dracula - Yeah this and his Val-Zod project were both things that I've wanted updates from but have heard barely anything from since they were announced smh.

@dracula - I'd say after Creed 3 wraps up we'll see some traction. Not sure if he'll direct Static, but Creed 3 seems like that'll take a lot of attention as a project before he could think about doing anything else

@dracula - They wrapped Creed 3 maybe like a week or 2 ago so it’s in post production now. He’s gotta get it finished and out by November so he’s going to be knee deep in that for a while. I know he’s only producing Static but I imagine there won’t be any real traction on that or any of his other projects until later this year/some point next year.

@dracula - If anything, I’d like a proper comedy-based cartoon revival for Archie and co., as the way it should have been: an animated equivalent of Saved by the Bell or Boy Meets World. There hasn’t been anything like that for Archie since the bygone, 1-dimensional Filmation cartoons.

@FlixMentallo21 - I fear Riverdale has permanently poisoned the Archie well for the immediate future but God, I would love that.

Off topic but Archie Meets the Punisher is so perfect because Archie and Frank are both in character and each "world" looks and feels it. It doesn't soften the Punisher (at least this pre-Ennis version) but it also doesn't do dark and edgy versions of Archie and his cast of characters, unlike Riverdale.

@dracula - Riverdale may be awful, but it's easily one of the most entertaining shows on network TV right now, IMO. Just sheer, audacious lack of concern for any sense of logic.

@WakandaTech - seems like they are letting directors pitch projects now, instead of just approuching directors with specific projects

@WakandaTech - As they should.
They are incredible iconic because of the Super Friends cartoon.
Everybody know who the Wonder Twins are.

@WakandaTech - That's a good thing, IMO. These movies should be planned based on good ideas that get presented, not trying to force out films based on a hierarchy of popularity.

Why did they cast apparently white looking actors for these roles? I think these characters have been coded in a more ethnic way. What's the point in pursuing diversity, if you won't actually make the, seemingly to me, diverse characters be diverse?
dracula
dracula - 4/15/2022, 5:43 PM
@dagenspear - a lot of the designs they have been given over the years could easily pass for asian

Maybe these were just who the director wanted or just who was best for the role
Origame
Origame - 4/15/2022, 6:15 PM
@dagenspear - yeah I've got to agree. These studios are constantly race and gender swapping all these white male characters (and in many cases for clear identity politics). Then when they have the perfect opportunity to bring in minorities without changing the races, they give us white actors? It's like, come on.

This better be basically confirmation they canceled the black superman movie!
