UPDATE #3: Skydance Finds New Paramount/Warner Bros. Film Chiefs — But Where Does That Leave DC's James Gunn?

Skydance has decided to move on from Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy for the new Paramount/Warner Bros. mega-studio, but what of James Gunn and why is he coming under fire from DC fans today?

UPDATE #3: In what's likely our third and final update to this story, Skydance CEO David Ellison has announced who will lead the merged Warner Bros. Discovery/Paramount Pictures conglomerate.

As expected, Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein will head up the film division, with James Gunn and Peter Safran set to remain as DC Studios co-chairmen. This isn't a surprise, as Gunn shared the Skydance announcement video last week and multiple trades reported that they'd been asked to stick around to spearhead the DCU.

George Cheeks will lead the TV division, with HBO's Casey Bloys heading up the  DTC/streaming division. Both George and Casey will report to JB Perrette.

UPDATE #2: The Hollywood Reporter has shared its own insights, revealing that "several insiders" expect James Gunn and Peter Safran to remain in charge of DC Studios "for the foreseeable future."

Per the trade, "Multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the duo met with Ellison in person Thursday and that the meeting was positive. The pair were asked to stay and 'keep doing what you’re doing,' per one source."

However, it's unclear who Gunn and Safran will report to, meaning they can likely expect big changes in how DC Studios operates. There's also no guarantee that Skydance will keep them; as the report notes, "De Luca and Abdy 'were led to believe they would still be here post-merger.' Adds this person: 'They met with David months ago and felt secure. Clearly a lot has changed since then.'"

UPDATE: Deadline reports that James Gunn and Peter Safran "had a recent meeting with new Skydance co-CEO David Ellison about their future, and it went well." As a result, both men are expected to remain in charge of DC Studios for the foreseeable future.

Whether that changes is anyone's guess, but for now, the newly formed Skydance will seemingly allow Gunn and Safran to continue their vision for the DCU without enlisting a new team to reboot the franchise. Still, David Ellison may be a little more hands-on than David Zaslav.

Late last night, the news broke that Paramount Pictures is expected to remove Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy as co-chairs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

They've had mixed fortunes while leading the studio. After a challenging 2024, they delivered multiple box office successes for Warner Bros. last year. However, 2026 hasn't been quite as kind. Movies like The Bride and Supergirl have bombed, and now Tom Cruise's Digger—which reportedly went way over budget—is set to be one of the year's biggest box office flops.

De Luca and Abdy have brought Warner Bros. plenty of awards success, including Ryan Coogler's Sinners. However, it seems David Ellison is looking for some fresh blood to revitalise what he's previously said will be a slate of at least 30 movies a year from the combined studios.

According to Deadline, Skydance will likely be run by current Paramount Motion Picture co-chairs, Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg. De Luca and Abdy learned of their ousting online last night, but it sounds like they may be asked to stick around in different roles. However, "Ellison never made a phone call to them about their future and whether or not there’s a job offer in hand."

While the duo recently renewed their contracts through 2030 under current Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Ellison clearly feels that Greenstein and Goldberg are the right choice to spearhead Skydance.

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are not mentioned in this report, though Puck said last night that Ellison will likely ask them to remain in charge of the offshoot studio. Well, "at least initially."

So far, Gunn and Safran have delivered two apparent hits in Superman and Lanterns, and a box office bomb with Supergirl. Ellison may want to give them a chance to continue with their shared vision for the DCU, but their future will surely hinge on how well Clayface and Man of Tomorrow perform.

For what it's worth, Gunn has shared Ellison's Skydance hype video on Threads, captioning it, "What once was the peak, is now just the beginning."

The response to his post has been understandably mixed, with fans responding, "Did Ellison hold you hostage just for you to post this," "I feel icky watching this," "Oh, this is such a bummer to see you post. This feels like the time you told people that The Flash was amazing," and "Paramount is going to make you turn Superman into Homelander."

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

It means Gunn is out the door once his contract expires.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Weren't you saying he's out the door once this merger settles, just a few weeks ago?

I expect Ellison to just let Gunn's contract expire and move on that way instead of firing him, as he has less than a year left on it. If Man of Tomorrow is a major hit, which I doubt thanks to Supergirl, I can see Gunn being offered the opportunity to make a third Superman movie, but not run the actual studio.

Abdy and DeLuca had a lot of failures this year but Supergirl wasn't one of them. That was all on Gunn and Safran.

So people saying James Gunn was safe by pointing out how they were definitely keeping DeLuca and Abdy and so would probably keep Gunn too... well that logic's not looking so sound anymore. Gunn be cooked. Which just makes his brown-nosing on twiiter look all the more pathetic.

@ObserverIO - There's no reason to fire Gunn and pay him the rest of his contract when he has less than a year left at the studio. The reason the other two you mentioned are being let go is because their contracts extends to 2030; that's too long to wait out.

@TheJok3r - Yeah it would be dumb. And that's probably the only reason they haven't fired him yet. His days are numbered.

@ObserverIO - The only reason WHY they're not saying it, is it would look realllyyyy baddd to the stockholders that you have a big blockbuster next summer...and you fire the guy who directed it.

What I theorize will happen in the next year, is that Gunn will step down and Safran will leave too. There is no way DC Studios in time is going to show any type of healthy profit till MOT and even then I do believe Gunn will be talked into stepping down amicably.

He's not a good CEO. Good director, bad CEO.

The outrage is just noise. If they can deliver on quality then this will just be a blip on the screen at the end of the day.

If MoT is epic, it will give pervy nutjob Gunn a stay of execution.

But he is clearly incapable of running The Who DCFU he created. Maybe he makes a 3rd Superman movie, but someone else must take over the overlord job.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/2/2026, 1:56 PM
@DocSpock - MoT is almost guaranteed to flop. They should Batgirl it or they'll lose money and it'll hurt the brand even more.

@DocSpock - none of the dcu has been epic

@TheJackAss -

Very true.

The last epic DC movie was The Dark Knight.

@DocSpock - im not sure he's capable of "epic". He's pretty consistently in his own way. His schtick was fun for awhile but now it's his MO. Superman deserves the best treatment. If Man of Tomorrow is just more sloppy that barely makes a buck then he kinda cements his legacy as the guy who peaked at Guardians of the Galaxy.

@Bucky74 - This was the one comment that pissed me off. And speaking of Star Trek I had some dude jump on me earlier about people pushing too much DEI on Star Trek and saying thats what the show is about. TF is wrong with people. Oh yeah, absolutely nothing about space exploration and different species.. nope all DEI.

Turn Superman into Homelander. GTFO

@AgentofSH1ELD - The triumph of the human spirit, space exploration, basic adventure and discovery. Nope, to them it’s only about how many trans Klingons they can cram in, lol

@AgentofSH1ELD - Harshly. As I suggested, you are a ❄️who cannot handle facts and opinions that upset you. I’m out.

@RolandD - snowflake? or spot of cocaine? either way the answer is yes. AND as the (presumably) only homosexual in our discussion with one another, id say you take a seat and kindly [frick] off. Take your DEI shit somewhere else and leave my space TV alone.
AgentofSH1ELD
AgentofSH1ELD - 10/5/2026, 6:59 AM
@Bucky74 - What I cant seem to get people to understand (at least from my point of view) is other people dont give a shit how others live their lives. No one cares if you are straight, gay, les, trans, a dog, whatever. We only care when you TELL us we have to do something.
Just leave everyone alone. Stop forcing shit. We dont need a full episode of gayness or a trans journey. Just let it happen in the story naturally if you feel it needs to be said. Otherwiese, just tell the [frick]ing story.

I think a lot of this will hinge on Man of Tomorrow’s performance. I could see it going both ways on if Gunn sticks around after that film.

James Gunn tem que ir embora, Lanterna não fez sucesso algum, a mídia que viralizou essa série trágica. E supergirls foi um fracasso retumbante.
