ZATANNA Movie Taps PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN Director Emerald Fennell To Pen The Script

Academy Award-nominated Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell is set to write the Zatanna movie for Warner Bros.' DC Films and Bad Robot.

We've been hearing that live-action take on the popular magic-wielding DC Comics heroine was in the works for quite some time, but it was assumed that plans had fallen by the wayside until it was recently revealed that the project was still on the studio's radar. Rumors pointed to a HBO Max series, but Variety confirms that the feature is being developed as a theatrical release.

This will mark the character's big-screen debut, although Serinda Swan previously played a live-action take on Zatanna in The CW's Smallville.

There's no word on whether Fennell, who recently landed a Best Director Oscar nomination for her work on Promising Young Woman, will also helm the movie, so we assume another filmmaker is being sought. Fennel was previously a showrunner on Season 2 of Killing Eve, and has also acted in Anna Karenina, The Danish Girl, Call the Midwife and The Crown.

There are reportedly HBO Max shows based on the likes of Swamp Thing and Constantine in the works, so there's a good chance Zatanna will ultimately join her fellow Justice League Dark members for the planned team-up series.

Who would you guys like to see play Zatanna? Woleb nwod tnemmoc a su pord.

@regularmovieguy - I can't believe they are going to waste her on this movie. Like give her a better thing to work on like i don't know Wonder Woman 3.

@aresww3

Have you seen Promise Young Woman? Zatanna sounds like it would be suited REALLY well for her tone and visual eye.

I don’t know if that movie screamed Wonder Woman but I wouldn’t scoff at that either.

Ideally you want the director to be attached first, to develop the project from the very beginning.
